80s style synth-pop/electro synth/cyberpunk music

Listened to the new The Midnight album, thought it was pretty good except the two already overtalked ones. Really enjoyed Daytona and Jason and the other two already released before.

With new Trevor Something i came to the realization this is just not my type of synthpop.

Trevor Somethings evolution on his new album is... weird, man. He's obviously trying to distance himself from the 80s moniker, but now it's just so generic.

What do you folks think about Foret de Vin? It's shamelessly earnest in that retro synthpop way.

Caved in and preordered The Finish Line.

Been checking out some of the featured artists on there I haven't listened to. Quite a fan of Plaisance now after raiding his back catalogue. Very chill, reminds me of Mitch Murder but warmer.

Yeah, great stuff. I've been waiting for a Forêt de Vin EP/album ever since hearing them for the first time on NewRetroWave's Maximum Burn EP.

Yep, his tunes have a really nice laid-back sound. My favourite Plaisance albums are Thunder In Paradise and Havasu.

I love Endless Summer from start to finish actually. My first impression of Lonely City was iffy, but I actually like it more and more with each listen, I love the transition from Nighthawks to Lonely City.

Only tiny critique would be I wish the standard track listing was adjusted. Crockett's Revenge should be the default album closer.

Love the vocal melody/echo on Jason.

Well the genre is very flexible :D and people still make synthpop too without knowing about the 80's revival.

This is my other nitpicky thing about Endless Summer, it's an album that definitely is all over the place is trying to pin it down to one specific subgenre. Lots of variety, which can be good , but also can be hit and miss if the variety fails, and the flow of the album can suffer.

Also, this is really good.

I'm surprised it wasn't available for purchase right when the show was released -- was the OST maybe not planned, or they not anticipate all this interest?

^Track is solid too. I come here every day I just don't listen to everything posted. I need to catch up. Something that's really hard with this genre.

Dance with the Dead remix of Metallica's Master of Puppets

DAM that's fuckin sick

Gost - Maleficarum video now out:

Thoughts are I think it's a good start, I have missed the harsh sounds to be honest. I don't think this particular song goes anywhere amazing but it's refreshing nonetheless.

And so is this!

I usually only talk about the newest synthwave releases in this thread, but today I thought it would be fun to try something different. Let's listen to the music of Dick Maas, the Dutch version of John Carpenter!

I don't have many good words to say about the Dutch film industry. Most movies from my country are either a bit pretentious or just plain bad. Paul Verhoeven is an exception of course, but director Dick Maas also valiantly tried to bring a bit of Hollywood splendor to the Netherlands in the eighties (with mixed results). An interesting fact is that Dick Maas often wrote, produced, directed and scored his own movies, much like - you guessed it - John Carpenter. Because his soundtracks are rather synth-heavy, I thought it would be fun to share some tunes with you guys.

Dick's best-known films are raunchy comedy Flodder, slasher flick Amsterdamned and De Lift, a movie about a sentient, murderous elevator. Yes, you read that right. Since Flodder was not only one of the most successful Dutch movies ever, but also spawned two sequels and a TV series that was endlessly rerun, almost any Dutchman above the age of 30 or so can hum the theme tune. Let's have a listen!

Here's the theme from the original Flodder movie. (Skip to 01:50 to hear the synth ditty everyone in Holland instantly recognizes as the Flodder theme)

The theme was later remade for the TV series, and this is is probably the version most people are familiar with.

If Flodder has piqued your interest, the full movie can be watched here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j60f0inJ0Oc

I hoped you enjoyed that, because there's more to come! It's time for De Lift, a very cheesy but fun horror movie. This infamous scene might convince you to watch (or avoid) it:

Here's the main title theme and the somber ending theme from De Lift.

By the way, the full movie can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MyOxMJkyk0

Now let's move on to Amsterdamned, the slasher film about a serial killer who lurks in the canals of the capital of Holland.

Hey, that last cover art looks a bit familiar! Prolific synthwave artist Mitch Murder copied it for the cover of a soundtrack for an imaginary Mega Drive game: https://mitchmurder.bandcamp.com/album/sprawl-ost

Here's Amsterdamned's main theme. This might be one of the most John Carpenter-ish sounding tunes from Dick Maas.

Here's the complete movie, if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i929dvH0PAU

So, what happened to Dick Maas after the eighties? Well, he never stopped writing, producing, directing and scoring movies, and while none of the films that followed could match the success of his earlier works (Down, the American remake of De Lift, was a huge flop for example), he won't give up on his dreams of delivering Hollywood-style amusement for a fraction of the budget. A few years ago he made a fun and cheesy horror movie about a killer Saint Nick, and this year he will release a thriller about a lion going on a rampage in Amsterdam. I'm sure that will be a fun and cheesy flick as well.

I hope you guys liked this write-up. Please let me know if you enjoyed the works of Dick Maas!

Julien-K released their new album, California Noir Chapter 2: Nightlife in Neon. Like their previous works its not exactly 'synthwave'. It blends a lot of well produced bright synths with a rock aesthetic capturing an 80's sound quite well. No surprise considering Amir played guitar for 80's hair band Rough Cutt before forming Orgy with bandmates Ryan and Fu (Fu acted as a behind the scenes 6th member of Orgy).

I feel like this is the bands strongest release since their debut album Death to Analog.

Nice writeup. Even in Germany we know the Flodders and their theme. Haven't seen it in a while and did not remember that it was this synthy. Thanks for the reminder.

I'll try and look into the other mentioned films as well

Thanks! Glad you liked it. I think it's really amusing that you guys know about Flodder :)

Since I'm not really familiar with German movies and series (lots of Krimis like Derrick, Tatort and Der Alte were broadcast here in Holland, though), I'm wondering if there is a German equivalent of John Carpenter/Dick Maas. Harold Faltermeyer is of course a well-known German synth composer who made it big, but do you know of any German directors who also scored their own movies or series?

I used to watch "Die Flodders" together with my family even my grandma laughed at the scenes :D It was dubbed here though, as any other foreign movie.

Can't really help you with a grman equivalent, though since I don't really watch/like german television anymore

In other news, my furi LP just arrived

Thanks for the write-up, retroman! I can personally vouch for the brilliant madness of Amsterdamned. It's a hodge podge of at least 6 different genres and it's absolute brilliance.

Is buying physical media the only official way of getting lossless copies of the Stranger Things soundtracks?

I believe in the depths of their Twitter they replied to someone and said that it's only iTunes exclusive for the first week.

Not sure if that will lead you to what you want.. but that's the official word.

PRAISING INTENSIFIES
There's some chatter in the video game vinyl thread about iam8bit tweeting a lot about the Stranger Things soundtrack this week and how they've released other Lakeshore stuff on vinyl.

For those unaware, they are generally seen as a (slightly?) hostile label with needlessly extravagant prices and some questionable practices (their actual records are still considered good, thankfully).

The Amazon listing is strange, since they don't sell iam8bit stuff, it could be a placeholder page, so we'll just have to wait for an official word.

Anyone see Mike Simonetti's post on his Facebook today accusing Johnny Jewel of being a thief for re-recording "The Magician" under Symmetry? Kind of curious to know more. It's not labeled as a cover. And the song is basically the same.

Huh, I just listened to a Symmetry record today (the Messenger).

I didn't see the post, any more details?

Ok, thanks. I'd prefer to buy it from the Survive Bandcamp page but I feel that's unlikely to happen.

Yeah, Amsterdamned is a lot of fun. It's probably my favourite Dick Maas flick :)

Noisepurge, this is your doing, isn't it?

Making me spend money on a trip to Helsinki in fucking November.

Awww yissss, and you'll like it.

I just played at Flow Festival, warming up John Carpenter this weekend and then hosting the Carpenter Brut gig. Couple months of break and the That one as the final nail in this years coffin :D I'm putting the club on hiatus after that so i do recommend coming to the last hurrah.
