A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

If you are asked if your game contains a feature that it does not contain, should you say that feature is or is not in the game?

It depends what I'm supposed to say and when I'm saying it. I have personally said things were in our game that actually were not in the game at the moment I said them but planned to be implemented; or they were in the game but were not yet completely functional, or were in the game but turned out to be completely-fuck-broken.

I've also been in positions where I'm specifically barred from saying anything about anything until a 'full response' can be conjured up from Satan. The one or two times I broke ranks on this, I was almost fired.

I really tried to avoid this thread because I thought I had the general idea. But now I see stickers and shit. Can someone clue me in on just that aspect?

I don't have time to read so many pages, so could somebody just tell me if you're supposed to see other players in the game? Simple yes or no, that's all that's needed, nothing confusing or vague. Thanks!

There's been no concrete confirmation so far, as of now it's looking like "no". We'll know for sure Friday.

Nah. Doesn't matter who it comes from this kind of nonsense goes on far too often in this industry. If you speak about something or advertise it and then need to cut it or shelve it for later then you best tell your audience before taking their hard earned money.

Does it though? I can't think of any other examples where devs described things you could do or experience (regardless of how small the odds) and then it just doesn't exist.

Sure there's back and forth between stuff like raid vs incursion (The Division) but at the end of the day there was still end game content that required multiple players.

Wow. 5000+ posts on GAF. Multiple topics on Reddit. A flood of direct tweets seeking an answer. Multiple inquiries from journalists and youtubers and....

Sean's twitter has been dead for 20 hours....

He hasn't gone this long without a tweet since last month. It's getting awkward.

Sean tried to tell us but he was in a different instance.

This is all we where able to get from him.

Sean says in the videos. The chances of encounter are tiny.
I don't understand why everyone complains. The game was released in less than a week and there are 18 quintillion planets for god sake!

The moment when a player meets other for the first time will be a milestone in the history of video games. Mark my words.

There'll be a huge thread on NeoGAF, I'm sure.

Kind of like this one. But with walls made of solid gold and pants made of solid silver.

I get the feeling they don't want to address it until after the full launch, maybe.

People would have been disappointed anyways since there wouldn't be any real possibilities of interaction. Murray likened it to Journey previously. You can't exactly meet up very easily at places that aren't space stations either.

Not much.

At first there was a picture circulating around that's not the one in OP where it showed that the sticker could be peeled off revealing that originally the game was meant to have online interactivity.

A lot of people called it to be fake, while I thought I was foolish at the time to believe it.

However, another one popped up that's in OP.

Here's the first "fake":

Recently posted, interesting stuff, time-stamp included. Would love to know if real.

I see that there still isn't an official answer. It's sick that some people are defending this.. I mean, taking a look at the size of this thread and other sources this was a huge deal to a lot of people... including myself.

Oh well, it's saved me 60 bucks.

Here's the "fake" he was calling out:

Here's the one in the OP by a completely different user:

Notice how the sticker placement is different? Not so sure it's fake anymore.

People thought this was fake? Lol... they also did it on PSN Store. I tried to point this out yesterday but people seemed to ignore me.

well if there is a sticker then it means perhaps Sean did have code, or plans, for multiuser interaction but it got put aside to meet deadline because it was always going to be hard for a small studio and he was back-pedalling but unable to really bring himself to sully the launch with a statement that they couldn't get it in as a feature.
Maybe he even thought it could be a day one patch.
Then he thought, oh, well I'll just use server naming traffic as cover.
Now he has fully realised how a small white lie has blown up and is hiding in a corner somewhere.

Well I won't jump the gun just yet but we have come to a similar conclusion.

That something was planned but was unable to be implemented.

Wouldn't make any other sense why these stickers exist.

If there are online functionalities, it really makes you wonder why else Sean would circumvent the issue. He doesn't even have to spoil what is there just say whether it is still possible.

I haven't followed too closely but can you show me any place where they talked about co-op? it would be cool (a good friend of mine is playing the game as well) but i don't think it was promised.

I already posted this video, but:

Forget the interviews, if multiplayer was never meant to be a big important feature of the game don't fucking announce the game with a trailer that almost entirely shows coop action.

Edit: To be honest I don't think they outright lied. They probably were very far off (both financially and development wise) to deliver that and the game reeks of something that should be now in early access but it's getting pushed as a full game.

Well that's pretty interesting. Thanks for the quick rundown.

I'm confused reading this. Is the issue that people thought they could meet each other online and then from that they would be able to play with each other? Is that why this is a big deal?

The way Sean tweeted about "easter eggs" and "cool moments" makes me think more and more that their implementation of multiplayer is that when you visit a planet someone else has already been to, there's a 5% chance to spawn an AI that is supposed to behave like a player would.

"Here is what it would look like if you actually were to meet another player" instead of anything resembling actual player-to-player connectivity.

I have a feeling that there won't be any response before the pc launch because they think a clear "no" (which seems like to be the case) will lead to some pre-orders to be canceled.

At this point I think it has more to do with the developer's dodgy and shady attitude than the multiplayer feature itself.

People don't care if it's it multiplayer or not, but they want the possibility to see other players to be real. Why is this so hard for many to understand? They markedet the possibility that way, and trust me, they would have sold less copies if they told everyone the truth before the release. You have to stop defending this bullshit. The developers have probably sold so many copies based on their lie that they probably won't have to develop another game ever again.

That trailers looks alot better than what was released. The beginning looks alot more alive compared to all the streams.

The issue is this.

Sean has stated multiple times that other players can see you and you can see them.

Sure you might not be able to "interact" with them other than viewing them.

However, this is the only known way to see your own avatar in the game.

This has been tested extensively by two twitch streamers. They have tried a lot of things today and yesterday.

They even made sure to connect online and get rid of whatever the NAT setting was and nothing happened.

Right now, all we want is clarification and that is what we're not getting

Nothing says coop here. Those are just AIs. We've known about the ability to make friends with the factions in game. That is more like consumers assuming or over hyping their selves up. C'mon man

Can't believe this thread is still up. It's entirely pointless at this time.

So confirmed 100% it's not a capacity or other technical issue?

It might be like a 'ghost' or replay of a player that was there in the past, a bit like racing games have ghosts of the fastest lap times.

I'm confused reading this. Is the issue that people thought they could meet each other online and then from that they would be able to play with each other? Is that why this is a big deal?

The issue is that Sean (the lead developer) has made routine statements for years in various interviews and QA sessions that now appear to be completely false (like the ability to see other players). When looking back at all of those statements, the consistent theme was that it is possible to see others but 'The game is so large, that the chances of that happening are basically zero'.

Then hours before launch, a single tweet goes out saying that NMS is not a multiplayer game and players should not go in expecting that. However, this was followed with more tweets that bring it back into a vague area.

Now we sit just 48 hours after launch, people are discovering that (apparently) nothing happens when two players are in the same place at the same time. There has been a flood of questions about if simply a feature is broken, servers are struggling, conditions are not being met etc.. Sean's twitter has been dead for almost 24 hours and there has been no concrete response to this.

These are from Sean Murray's Twitter on the 8th. (2 days ago)

To be super clear - No Man's Sky is not a multiplayer game. Please don't go in looking for that experience.

https://twitter.com/NoMansSky/status/762689755792412672
We do have some online features and easter eggs so people can know they are playing in the same universe. It's about cool "moments"

"No you can't meet other players, but there are some cool moments like naming planets and animals".

That's what he is trying to say.

So confirmed 100% it's not a capacity or other technical issue?

No it's not confirmed either way. There's another two people, description on reddit, trying to meet and they say the game crashes when they are close. From personal experience, the only crash I've had is trying to upload a 100% planet to the servers, the short time I had connection to the servers, so could be server issue. Who knows?

Why is it pointless when the developer has tweeted on the official Twitter account about being really surprised that two players are meeting in the game, and when pressed about it, he doesn't give any clarification of what he means? I think that's the biggest question for most rational people here. The majority of people probably don't feel cheated or that they "lied" about multiplayer or anything. It's just weird to have him specifically mention something like this, and then clam up when streamers wanted to explore it further and found that it doesn't seem to work.

"No you can't meet other players, but there are some cool moments like naming planets and animals".

That's what he is trying to say.

So what does this mean? This was 20 hours ago.

Two players finding each other on a stream in the first day - that has blown my mind

We added a 'scan for other players' in the Galactic Map to try to encourage this happening. We wanted it to happen - but the first day?

We want people to be aware they are in a shared universe. We added online features, and some Easter Eggs to create cool moments

Remember what he said during his AMA.

If he is forced to keep tight lips on something, it's likely contractual. Which would point to Sony.

Maybe they should try with more than 2 players - maybe everyone should just try and meet at the same spot?

There's a problem with this

Heavy game spoiler
All players could be in a different galaxy. The ones who tried it were definitely in the same system and planet as any renaming done by other reflected to the other player
