On the topic of "are some things not worth doing, even if you need the money?" I'm going to vote yes. I can't claim the impoverished background of some posters, but I have been through some pretty lean times in my life. Each of those times, there was a possibility of eating shit to get by, but I always chose not to, even though it was scary, and in retrospect I am happy with all of those decisions.

are you really trying to make this into some social cause célèbre? This isn't about friggin wealth inequality and middle class disappearing. It's about one individual making an obscenely silly mistake in a potential job opportunity, overvaluing his own time over others in the process, being so profoundly inept in basic job interview etiquette that you literally walked out without even bothering to ask the assistant what was going on. Because she was too busy?

Think about this for a second. Even if you were right, what does this all say about you?

1. You lack the assertiveness to speak up for yourself and ask an assistant what is going on? Probably poorly follows directions/poor in social situations.

2. You lack the ability to ask for instructions or learn how the interview process was going to work. Probably would have a tough time following basic guidelines for projects you'd be working on. Probably would lack the social graces to ask if he didn't know the answer.

3. You're incredibly insulting to others merely by the tone of your attitude. I mean that letter of yours is truly remarkable. You're basically telling the guy your time is worth more than his, in about as nails-on-chalkboard a way as possible. The guy was practically a saint how he responded back to you. More than even walking out of the interview, this letter suggests you're probably currently incapable of being apart of a functional work group.

4. You KEEP defending the wrong, trying to say you had some gut feeling or some shit, rather than saying "you know what, i'm young, I really needed this job, I fucked up. On the next job interview I'm going to ace this shit. Thanks NeoGAF for the advice!" I can't even list the number of ways this attitude alone would fuck you in the long term for any decent job.

All of this. Your reaction, OP, highlights major character flaws that may or may not be true. Unfortunately, that manager is probably glad he didn't hire you.

If you want a job then go get it, don't wait for it to come to you. Sitting around for 45 minutes is waiting... ask the receptionist how long the process will be or if they need to reschedule. Timidly waiting for someone to tell you what you need to know is not the hallmark of a reliable and independent employee.

Exactly. I'd want a potential candidate to be assertive in that situation.

Then again, as an applicant, I wouldn't want to go near a company that was this discourteous to potential employees.

I have a job interview tomorrow for a job that I'm not sure I want or will get, but it's clerical work and it appears to pay well.

I actually haven't had a real job interview since 2011.

Last job I got, I wore a suit and the worst possible tie that I could because it was for a radio show. I got that job almost immediately.

But most of my other interviews were at retail/sales positions. I got handed back my resume because of the following reasons.

• The top of my resume was clerical work for the Internal Revenue Service. I guess people think that I would be dishonest for working for the government. I had level 4 security clearance at that job. I was entrusted with billions of dollars worth of ACTUAL MONEY and checks. But people think the IRS is untrustworthy. ;_;
• The next two items on my resume were management positions. I remember applying at a theater and the lady doing the interview asked me if I had any questions. I asked her how long she had been with the theater. She apparently had been there three months and was already a manager. Then she handed me my resume and said that she was happy with keeping her job and that's why she wasn't going to hire me. :-(

But I think this should be fine.

Also, it's really awful that the person doing the interview was so inconsiderate. I would send an e-mail stating that I had personal business to attend to and had to leave. Then I would see if I could reschedule that interview.
