AC: Valhalla |OT| From Nordic runes to English ruins

Bitmap Frogs

Mr. Community
I saw a video saying the Series X doesn't hold 60fps. The fact a next gen console can't play a last gen title at 100% performance isn't filling me with confidence for the future. What about the next AC game that isn't held back by last gen consoles? Worse performance?

It's also running almost at 4k.

I am kinda skeptical about getting it now. It releases the same day as a Yakuza

I want to play it because I love the setting but at the same time not sure about the PC performance nor the $68 weird price tag on EGS
Dude I forgot all about Yakuza...

Fuck. well, next paycheck. I'm spent after upgrading my PC and getting the X. Though if I saw a PS5 pre order available right now I'd be all over that shit.

Bump couldnt find this thread

I couldnt figure out why i was traveling across the entire game as my like third quest into a level 280 territory then i realized it was the prologue haha.

Also, i just did my first raid and i was killing people and taking resources and i hear some girl yell "help me help me" and im like "i better help her before i finish this quest"..then i realized it was me and my people she was screaming about haha

okay afte 8 hours I can make a small pro and cons list of this game:

Pro's
+World looks fantastic
+music is amazing
+voice acting actually good
+exploration is rewarding and fun

Con's
-the audio sometimes can be horrible (dialogues sound like they are inside an hall or cave, muffled sounds everywhere ugh)
-the loot system is kinda boring you find way less new armour pieces then I was expecting
-the sidequests you can find are really really fucking stupid. they always have useless "disney humor" attached to it...why Ubisoft...this is a game about brutal vikings
-you can't kill priests, monks or any type of civilian..cmon man youre a viking, why is it not allowed to pillage villages and kill people

will add more once i know more

Did you rape her and kill her in the end like a good Viking does? :messenger_beaming:

man the OST is lit as fuck. it started weak and got strong pretty fast the intro. At first i was like meh, then i put my first armor on and i was like fuck yeah...this is why i love this series.

also, 60fps on 1440p 2080 super.

How you finding performance? I have a 2080 S, 32gb ram and a 3600xt, would that perform better than xsx/ps5? I'm a pc noob if you will lol

1440p ofc.

I’ve skipped the last couple AC games but this one has completely sucked me in. I love the setting, characters, story, and the gameplay. I plan to play this one all the way through

Really debating on this, can any GAF played enough to comment on if it has a more interesting stories and better pacing than Odyssey? I don't hate Odyssey but it is probably the worst slog I ever had to go through.

I don't think you should be looking at any of the modern ubisoft open world games if you are worried about "pacing" to be honest.

And I say that as someone who has enjoyed their (limited) time with the game so far.

Haha can't say you are wrong at all. I should have asked differently. Are the side contents really boring fillers or they actually have some charms and merits? I platinumed most Assassin's creed this gen and don't mind side contents, it was just Odyssey burned me out too badly.

Only about 3 hours in, but I'm loving it.

It's very hard for me to adjust to the combat coming from Odyssey since it otherwise plays so similarly. I'm having a particularly hard time figuring out parry timing and when to parry vs. dodge.

I think the side content is fine in this one, it feels more deliberate rather than being copy/pasted.

The weapons/armour sets for example are hand placed around the world (either at a certain location or as a reward for beating a certain enemy), as are skill books (which you now need to unlock certain combat skills). Some of those things you will stumble into via side quests and others you will by just exploring the world organically.

I really didn't like odyssey but I'm enjoying this so far, free roam exploration and side content is actually rewarded with unique items which makes a welcome change.

You can parry attacks that glow yellow but attacks that glow red need to be dodged.

That's some positive feedback, thanks !

Yeah, I just feel like I keep messing up. The timing feels completely different to Odyssey. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

This is Odyssey with more slog and less reward for getting through it. For the record I loved Odyssey but it clearly had tons of filler BUT I enjoyed a lot of the over arching storylines and characters. This...not so much, it's slog for the sake of slog with no real feeling of reward as you progress.

lol No. Odyssey was a poorly written horrid grindy mess. Valhalla is an actual good engaging game with a decent narrative.

What like super mario brothers? It's based in real life - but there are also mushroom people?

I'm not saying I'm not enjoying it - it just stands out. It's based in real life - but only in the sense that people have 2 arms and 2 legs, and that Vikings were once real.

I understand these are creative decisions, but I'm not sure how it makes the game more appealing.
There's a lot of creative decisions in the game. My most irking is the polar bears in Norway and the highly aggressive wolves everywhere, wolves are shy and it's extremely rare that would attack a human. Polar bears on the mainland Norway is just heh. All this besides, I really enjoy the game.

I can't hold off GAF. Going to download this and use my exra week waiting for PS5 to make some progress. I know I cna copy my copy to the PS5 but what does the upgrade to the PS5 version look like after this? Does the PS5 just aply a patch or will I need to download the actual PS5 version complete from the store?

I expected the game to run bad on PC but actually it runs way better than Watch Dogs Legion

Played for about two hours and I like everything I saw so far. Putting it on hold till I am done with Yakuza

About 6 hours in, the game is nice overall, but like i said, i enjoyed the first hours in odissey too...

Yesterday i fucked up the first legendary animal (the one with the horns).

The game has probably some memory leaking, the stutter became more and ore prominent while i was playing and it completely goes away with a restart.

1440p ofc.
Am on 1440p and its pretty smooth sailing at 60fps. Dips down to some 50s at some points but n9thing too big.

So it was even 8hrs in first map. Thats a lot hrs i must say. And then in england game little changed , so enemies have lvls i learned it hard way. Its nice i will invest now more to exploring this. Found some glitchy animus new times mission even..
Just not sure when i will get new armor do i spend loot for upgrading first armor or wait for new armor maybe.
Its funny when i tried to raid like many times stronger camp and my men where on ground half dead...i was still taking those recourses but my man where waiting for me heal them and i just run to boat as brave man i am.. as anyone would do lol ..so i jumped to boat and everyone came to boat no prob alive lol free healing.
but i miss that snowy norway..snow was cool with good physics in it too.
Games must be fun too not too realistic. Thats why i dont play kingdom anymore , couldnt even finish it. We need all kind of games, tou cant say whats good or bad its just your opinion and it doesnt matter at all to other.

😄 You will, it's not terrible but you will notice it at times.
The one thing i noticed, i was in a dark cave and there was some flicker in there. I assumed it was because i switched to try another game and went back, and my tv caused it. But i think it was the game

I think I've sort of his the cliff just two regions in. Is the whole game really just getting each and every region from a different questline?

So right now I have the Ubisoft+ version on PC (I got it at the right time to finish Watch Dogs and play AC) and it runs fine at 1080p 60fps on Medium to highish settings, but I have a PS5 coming next week, is the upgrade to that worth it?

I am really enjoying the game, but I have to admit that combat just feels kinda mediocre. Maybe Tsushima is still too fresh in my mind.

Wait for DF to tell us what settings the consoles are running at before deciding (and how much they hold native 4K). IMO there's no way they are running at max settings.

Few screens from my playthrough at max settings at 80% of 4k:

It seems really heavy and slow compared to Origins and Odyssey (except the massive dodge). I also don't like the bow not firing until you properly nok and draw and let go. It's too janky feeling the way he lowers it when you expect an arrow to loose. Only two hours in, see how it goes.

Playing this now with my son. Reminds me of odyssey. Doesn’t seem to be a bad game, but it reminds me of God of War, maybe because the Vikings.

A story written by AI generator. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Edit: Vavra was the director and lead writer of Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Kinda his fault tho, i never bought an ac game for the writing...it's like buying an uncharted games for challenging climb sections...

I am enjoying Valhalla, but I empathize. Dan is the kind of guy who has the philosophy that if someone is trying to portray something real - like vikings - they should do it as accurately as humanly possible, otherwise why bother, might as well make up fantasy nonsense. So he gets pissed off when others take historical periods and proceed to bastardize them. And it is true that most of the stuff in Valhalla is just fantasy. As is the show Vikings. Last Kingdom was significantly better though.

Another point, both Valhalla and Kingdom Come have similar story opening on paper (you play young person, your village gets invaded, your dad gets killed by the bad guy, you swear revenge). But KCD is much more emotional and higher quality despite infinitely lower budget that Warhorse had. Because KCD actually gave me some extended interaction with my dad and mom before the invasion, and because the cinematography and music during the invasion scene was much better.

Kinda his fault tho, i never bought an ac game for the writing...it's like buying an uncharted games for challenging climb sections...

AC games don't have great writing historically (and Ubi games in general), but they are still storydriven and it is a large focus, so it deserves criticism. That said I don't find Valhalla offensively bad so far, just..average.
