Amiibo Thread 5 | Because we didn't preorder thread 4

Yeah, Mega Man and Sonic look to be the most-produced since the Wave 1 commons. They're only 'rare' because they're actually characters that everyone legitimately wants.

And because scalpers realize this.

And because not scalpers are buying one or two extras as collateral for trades.

The fever's taken such hold now that Nintendo can ship way more but still can't shake the perception of scarcity. Like I said, the only option left now to make things seem plentiful is to comically over-produce, and then that's going to piss off retailers that are sitting on piles of stagnant stock.

Pretty much. So many people buying multiples just to trade or whatever, as helpful as it may be, has the same effect as scalping.

Exactly , whether its intentional or not by buying multiples the inventory go down substantially quicker i rather i get one amiibo and leave the other one for someone is to get.

Went ahead and just bought a Japanese Dedede off of ebay for $30 :( I figure it's not too bad of a gouging. And hey, shipping was free! It'll just take forever to get here...

The last of my wave 3 orders got here.

So now I have a toon link, bowser, lucario (x2) and Dedede that I don't even want. I don't feel like running around and returning them all or taking the time to package them all and ship them to someone. Dunno what I'm gonna do with them to be honest.

I've only bought a golden amiibo (just one) just for the whole reason to trade it off for an amiibo, the only time i've bought double was because my friend asked if i could get the second one for him and he'd give me the wft (made sure the store had more before i bought the 2,, they had 4 megamen left) but again, i'll probably trade off my WFT and Golden amiibo for things i really want, shulk and Captain falcon more or less.

Is your wii fit trainer NA?
I have shulk , what else are you looking for?

I'm going to find out on thursday, but its probably NA(since my friend hasnt imported anything yet) but basically i really want shulk, FEA characters(which isnt a right thing to ask for due to rarity), captain falcon is #1, pit is a #3ish (since my sister wants it and i'm trying to find one for her)

Don't worry man ,you don't have to justify your purchase's i have no issue with how you or anybody spends their money whether its to collect or scalp.

Although i find it funny that there's people who hate scalpers due to them "artificially decreasing stock" by buying multiple when these same people buy multiple of that amiibo "for trades" don't see how they are both a direct cause of the low stock.

Look back a few pages where everyone scored at a pre order for Gold Mario countless of people ordered 2 , its no surprise why it sold out so quick and why no one now can get their hands on it now without paying a premium. Chance sare thoes who bought gold Mario for trade want an equally expensive amiibo in return ,in essence getting into this business is not cheap.

In the short term trading reduces supply, in the longer term it reduces inflation on those who participate in the trading. I grab two of x, you grab two of y. We trade one of each, it's the same as each of us buying one of both, and we didn't have to pay extra. We both benefit through cooperation, but it hurts anyone who isn't participating and has nothing to trade, since now the micro-economies are depleting twice as fast. But someone else does still benefit through a trade in the end, and a loser is always guaranteed either with or without trading.

It's like Survivor reality tv, where if you want to win ie., have the entire collection, you have to have a social game. Lone wolves that have nothing to offer their teammates will very likely not be able to complete their collections with MSRP prices. Even without any traders, that would still likely be the case.

PM me if you're interested in getting rid of that Dedede and a Lucario :D

$10 more than usual ($14 for the figure after tax, $5~ to ship).

You made it out with minimal damage, I'd say. Makes me wonder why I didn't do the same with Villager back when he was only $30. Arrrgh, hindsight 20/20 and all that.

A few months ago I found my Pit at a Fry's that had just stocked, they had one more Pit and 3 Captain Falcons that I left alone. The thought that I made someone else's day by leaving all that was warm and fuzzy, but man, snagging a few for trades would have really made things easier for me down the line. Doin' the right thing is so conflicting sometimes.

HAHA I don't think retailers CARE who they're selling... So long as they sell
Nah, it's definitely a factor. Like I said, your major retailers only have so much space and they give multiple facings and prime real estate to known characters like Mario and Pikachu. Wal-mart didn't even order any Dedede or Ike to their stores, which further compounds their scarcity.

I am glad that you felt good but they probably went to a scalper. Just the reality. At least someone else had a shot at them though so that is cool

Yep. This is why I hate when people talk about having multiples. They are just stock piling amiibos for future trades how shitty is that?

Glad that some people are getting their double gold Mario's canceled though.

you let a scalper buy them instead of holding onto them to trade to me? D:

The boyfriend has a Toad preordered from GS and I have one preordered at Target. I kinda wanna work on a Captain Toad with the 2nd guy. Target did a great job shipping Ike without so much as a scratch on his cardboard so I have confidence Toad (future captain) will be the same.

Your right , its always nice to make off with a couple of a rare high profile item but i see no point in further reducing the stock of an already limited item.Like 20th anniversary PS4 do people really need 2 of that?

People not fortunate enough to buy in that limited time window get burned , scalpers are one factor but i don't blame them if people are willing to pay asinine prices for an item i wouldn't doubt that most people would also sell it. but people who buy excess whether to trade or collect are another contributing factor. As you can tell retailers don't really give damn who buys the product otherwise you would see a strict one per household policy.

Nintendo World and Best Buy are among the retailers who do enforce a policy Nintendo World has a strict ID policy on rare items and Best Buy is liable to cancel your stuff if they see anything suspicious , they actually want to maximize their customer base more people who can buy the item=more happy people who will most likely shop their again.they know they are dealing with a shitty situation but they are doing the best they can.

Snagged a Diddy this afternoon that looks pretty good. Now I'm missing Marth and Lucario, then I'm done with waves 1-3. A $75 Amazon card will just about lock down wave 4 too, so...yippee!

The wait for the Ness amiibo is scary.

Yeah it is. Dan (my BF) wants all of the original Smash dudes so Ness is a MUST.

I will make sure we get one...this is coming from someone who was at best buy 3 hours before they opened in -10 degrees.

Agreed. So scared I'll miss out on him. I'm just hoping there's no exclusives, so at least I'll have multiple chances to pre order.

As I've stated before, Wave 3 was stated to have exclusives at the announcement of said wave, even if not every retailer was detailed at that time. It's really unlikely that they'd not do the same with Wave 4

If I haven't found an Ike in the wild by now, am I pretty much out of luck?

Not a bad way of explaining things. I like it!

Ness and Charizard amiibo have been certified by Nintendo...with only 1 month of manufacturing. Does not bode well for stock.

No freaking way! Really?

I knew Charizard was going to be rare , even moreso if he ends up being a store exclusive to ToysRus and Ness is self explanatory ,NoA's lack of care to the Earthbound/Mother series should have been the signal for most.

Ness & Charizard will seem overstocked in comparison to the Winged Unicorn that will be Robin/Daraen.

I always figured Charizard would be very common. But I guess this makes me think he will be TRU exclusive like Lucario...

You figured Charizard would've been rare? I would have figured him to be the fairly common figure of Wave 4, easily.

Charizard was always known as a rarity when it came to his collectibles , like the Original Holo Charizard Pokemon card despite him being the most popular starter they produce the least amount for him, they can repeat history and make this Charizard amiibo rare.

I figured only wave 1 was going to flood the shelves, every other wave wouldn't , im starting to see less and less bowsers and toon links

but lucario was exclusive , toys r us loves pokemon , charizard ready

My moral rule of thumb is that I'll only consider buying multiples if it's a small percentage of the overall stock on the shelf, and the only time that's come up so far is with Sonic, which I bought 2 out of the 16 that were on the shelf. Things with only a couple on the shelf, ideally someone who legitimately wants them will buy the ones I left, but if someone buys them to scalp, eh, it's not like they're making away with cartfuls. I found one lone Captain Falcon hanging at Target when I needed that, I found that Pit, and it seems pretty likely that the only reason I found those in the first place is because someone only bought what they personally wanted and left the rest alone. I try and pay that forward when I can. This paranoia that we've got to beat the scalpers before the scalpers beat us only compounds the problem all around.

(I'm well aware that buying 2 Sonics compounded the problem, too, just with less immediate effects. Ah well, shades of grey.)

I just don't get why people are assuming any of Wave 4 will be exclusive? Everytime a wave or amiibo was announced as an exclusive it came at the same time as the announcement of said wave/figure. Remember, the Gold Mario was only known from a leak previously. It was only officially revealed yesterday, and at the same time we knew it'd be a Wal-Mart exclusive. I get the paranoia about stock, but the exclusive speculation really doesn't have much warrant.

Yep, I sort of figured Charizard was going to be another Lucario. Toys R Us usually gets those limited Pokemon exclusive items. But we'll have to wait and see as usual.

I knew it. I knew that they would focus on Mario Bros Line up first so that's why we didn't get any preorders yet because the retailers don't have any official numbers of Amiibo yet.

Basically we might see preorder of wave 4 coming soon, like a week or two weeks.
