Android |OT7| Now With a Whole New Messaging System

height is the bigger problem fitting it in some of my pants when the phone is larger than 5.2in. I don't mind if they get rid of the buttons and move finger print to the back center, in fact that's preferable.
I can't imagine many budget Chinese phones copying the bezel less look this quickly. That does require a bit of R&D.

2018 flagships that are 16:9 will be a rarity.

2019 is when Huawei and zte start sell 18:9 budget phones lol.

Thinking about jumping to Android from iPhone 6 plus. I really want a smaller phone and the S8 looks great. I have jumped from iOS to Android and back a couple times but now I've had the 6 plus for 2,5 years.

How is the security/malware situation on Android? Is it necessary to have some sort of antivirus software installed? Sorry if this sounds ignorant but the headlines make it seem like Android is plagued with malware...

Why exactly? I'm not sure no bezel there makes it worse than other places. I actually though no side bezels would be worse as that's where I grip things. Well unless its got good palm rejection detection.

Because you will have to hold the phone right at the bottom corner to even reach the bottom of your screen and then can't reach the top

You don't need an av and never have unless you're side loading apps from dodgy sources

Is there any tips for the fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S7?

It's complete garbage compared to the one on the 6P; it barely works with my left thumb, and I get constant "Please Wait 30 seconds" locked out messages.

I've redone the fingerprint setup dozens of times, and it's still very, very unreliable.

I don't want a bezel less phone anyway that's just usage nightmare especially using it single handed, but shaving just a bit both top and bottom will be good enough in 85% of case I guess.

Anyone here use their phone to remote into their home PC? Can anyone recommend a good app for this?

I used to use one years ago but that app is now discontinued :(

Ehhh it doesn't really show memory management, and ever since the switch to art a lot of boot performance is solved during the download/install.

Not to say the G5 Plus isn't solid. It's way faster than the G4 Plus after checking some reviews. Guess the 625 is 14nm vs 617 being 28nm. So the smaller processor allowed them to clock up the cores a fuck ton.

This isn't really a showcase of CPU perf, the S625 is still only 2Ghz. I think A53 is around half the perf per clock compared to Kryo It's still lagging quite far behind high end SoCs.

A better test would be something taxing the CPU more like a heavy website, app etc.

Not finding any footage of this out there. Is elephone a reputable brand?

Elephant elephone's mi mix clone is not out yet but announced for this year. Elephant elephone is no more reputable than other cheap Chinese brands. Video of last year's elephone s7

Got to try them at my O2 store today, both the S8 and the S8+.

I'm really not sure about it, it looks fantastic with so much of the front being a screen however i think they went the wrong way around with it. Rather than increasing the screen to fill more of the bezel and getting the weird aspect ratio, i feel they should have reduced the bezel instead and kept it towards the 16x9 aspect ratio (much like the Mi Mix) - but i recon I'd be in a minority on this.
I'm with you but no company is going that path as it's harder to pack more battery, camera, components etc in the smaller space.

That said, I was initially skeptical about the S8 design. I thought it was going to look like the LG G6. Xiami Mi Mix design shits all over that

I've been won over by seeing the S8 irl hands-on. Renders don't do it justice. Samsung is legit with the 'infinite display' marketing speak; the curved glass edges make a difference in making the bezel 'disappear' when using the device (and it feels great in the hand with no of that S7 Edge sharpness). There'll soon be arguments over what is real 'bezel-less' design similar to arguments over what is real 'wireless' charging lol. S8 doesn't have a bezel while Mi Mix has a (very thin) bezel imo.

I don't think the S8 hardware design can be beat this year. It'll probably only be topped when Samsung makes the top&bottom bezels covered edges as well...

That's really interesting. Does that mean that every other app will actually display content on those edges that are covered by the rounded bezels and thus not visible to the user or has Samsung made software tweaks to avoid that?

heh, I should have continued with the rest of the anandtech quote:
...Third-party apps, however, find their vertical dimensions constrained to the purely rectangular portion of the display, with the status bar above and the navigation bar below taking on black backgrounds.

However, this is Android so there are easy fixes available e.g. Cornerfly and Navbar Apps can provide rounded corners and change the background of the Navbar, respectively, even without root.

Despite those options, I'm not sure Samsung made the right choice to go with a transparent menubar&navbar. Obviously On Screen menu buttons are a step backwards for immersion compared to the hardware/capacitive buttons of previous Galaxy phones. S8 is using SAMOLED (while Mi Mix/G6 are using LCDs) so I think the black background for the menubar&navbar (with curved edges following the lines of the device) would be great for the S8 as they would blend into the bezel. Sure it would make the top&bottom bezels seem larger but it would also make the screen content itself more immersive.

Of course the best option would be to just get rid of the OS chrome and reduce the menubar icons to a dynamic minimum like early windows phone 7:

I don't think any mobile OS is that courageous today

Wonder how many more years before no bezel?

Basically the mi mix but somehow have the camera and sensors under the display.

I bet mi mix 3 will get there lol.

Yep. The dynamic notifications are more useful than I thought since they use icons from the app, such as user images for email and so forth.

I agree. I've been using it for a long time now and I really like all the customization options it has.
Yeah. I had used it for a long time on my Moto X and decided to use something else for my 6P. I installed it again and it reminded me of the awesomeness I experienced with my Moto X.
I was using Nova for a long time, but I got bored of it and switched to Action Launcher 3. I'm sure I'll go back to Nova again though.
Yeah, I know how that feels. I actually might switch it up and rotate launchers to keep it fresh.

shouldn't take that long. the main constraint is the front facing camera. personally I'd say fuck the camera; selfies are overrated etc but perhaps some enterprising OEM could resurrect this design:

Or put a small selfie display on the back lol.

Actually that would be kinda nice. Have to use a clear case though.

No ios device now so my apple TV is gimped.

How is the chrome cast 4k version?

Do you have a 4K TV? If not you could just get the 2nd gen 1080p model and save some cash.

That or you could get an Android TV Box.

Ok so I had to run out and get my Doge some more doggy food. So I swung by the AT&T store to see if they had dummy units after I went to Target.

Quick hot takes. Screen is baller. Camera seemed fine. Edge detection wasn't an issue. No clue how it really feels in the hand though as the big ass tether clamp made it a pain in the ass to hold.

The S8 Plus is fucking comically tall though. It's too tall. If I go with this regular S8 for me.

S8 Plus reminded me of that 2 x 12 Lego brick that is long as fuck.

Got the 2016 Samsung 4k HDR one gaf likes. I honestly have a hard time telling 4k from 1080p and I sit fairly close to my tv.

Hmmmm.

Check the app store on your TV. It should have a Google Play Movies app.

Beyond that every else is built into your TV unless we are talking about casting random grey area stuff.

Yeah. Doesn't seem to have an option to cast stuff from my chrome browser like porn or twitch or what not.

Today i've gone around hoping to find the GS8 and see the thing in person... no luck on that but i've spent a few minutes with the iPhone 7+ camera at the Apple Store and i've done a couple of drop dead gorgeous photos with the bokeh thing.
The photos were so good that i had to send it through AirDrop to another phone and save them... so good that i'm actually thinking of printing them.

Android OEMs need to copy this feature fast from Apple and they must achieve at least the same quality, it really makes the difference.

Drawing behind system bars, like the status and nav bars, is something the developer has to enable.

I highly doubt third party apps are restricted from that.

Chrome does not do this on any phone with software navigation buttons.

It is incredibly good. Thank you for posting this. People think I'm being a fanboy or whatever. No. The iPhone 7+ camera just feels and looks fantastic. It is so simple to use and the images process in an instant. HDR or lens blur photos on Android are so slow and cumbersome.

I don't like selfies but I do use that front-facing camera to face-time with my daughter pretty often. She loves it.

I'm sure there is a place in the market for a phone with no front-facing camera though. Just as long as there are some that have one as well....

urgh... played with friend's 1 year old US s7 edge and... yeah... He tells me he doesn't notice performance issues...

but then some people keep telling me that zelda doesn't lag lol.

Is there really no android phones on at&t (for wifi calling) that runs well?

moto z carrier version is verizon only right?

Does HTC even do carrier stuff anymore?

Maybe i should just switch to t-mobile. heard they do wifi calling on some unlocked phones like pixel and oneplus?

the lack of corporate discount is what bums me.

currently paying about $180 a month for 5 lines 20gb of data at at&t.

t-mobile will cost me 200+ for 'unlimited'* data, but its not like i need all of them.

My discount is the only reason I stick with AT&T. Verizon actually offers a higher discount for me but it's only for the non-unlimited plans. And they only seem to offer up to 8GB before going to unlimited. Which is dumb.

Can iPhone take RAW photos yet? Not that I use phones for cameras, just curious.

About my only exposure to camera photography is through Andy Inahkho. Who seems to prefer the Pixel to iPhone despite being a camera nerd and mostly Apple guy.

I dunno about raw.

I've never used a Pixel camera during a long holiday. I can only speak to my 6P. If the Pixel took photos as easy and as fast as the iPhone 7+, excellent. But it doesn't do Portrait mode without lens blur. Lens blur is slow. Portrait is instant.

I hope Google doesn't pull a Samsung and keeps going hard with the Pixel 2 camera. Smartphone cameras have a lot of work to put in. Watch super powerful processors and great software get us to DSLR levels. Apple has already done a bunch of things to photography that camera companies never did in their decades of experience. Like dynamic flash color. Here's hoping these tech companies don't sit on their laurels. I actually think photography is an area Google and Apple know has much room for improvement.

Google Photos is still way better than Apple Photos but Google's software is a bigger pita to use on an iPhone. Even with Google's free storage, beating the tightly integrated iOS software is tough. I'm sticking with Google to avoid ecosystem lock in.

What are good fast wireless charging stands that are 3rd party? Seeing a lot of options on amazon but you can't really rely on amazon reviews anymore.

Sony flagship cycle always confused me. They basically resell the same phone again every few months with slightly new something and a new name?

And its a fixed schedule too. So the XZ isn't getting the 835 so it's basically last year phone with extra slowmo?
