Not finding any footage of this out there. Is elephone a reputable brand?
Elephant elephone's mi mix clone is not out yet but announced for this year.
Elephant elephone is no more reputable than other cheap Chinese brands. Video of last year's
elephone s7
Got to try them at my O2 store today, both the S8 and the S8+.
I'm really not sure about it, it looks fantastic with so much of the front being a screen however i think they went the wrong way around with it. Rather than increasing the screen to fill more of the bezel and getting the weird aspect ratio, i feel they should have reduced the bezel instead and kept it towards the 16x9 aspect ratio (much like the Mi Mix) - but i recon I'd be in a minority on this.
I'm with you but no company is going that path as it's harder to pack more battery, camera, components etc in the smaller space.
That said, I was initially skeptical about the S8 design. I thought it was going to look like the LG G6. Xiami Mi Mix design
shits all over that
I've been won over by seeing the S8 irl hands-on. Renders don't do it justice. Samsung is legit with the 'infinite display' marketing speak; the curved glass edges make a difference in making the bezel 'disappear' when using the device (and it feels great in the hand with no of that S7 Edge sharpness). There'll soon be arguments over what is real 'bezel-less' design similar to arguments over what is real 'wireless' charging lol. S8 doesn't have a bezel while Mi Mix has a (very thin) bezel imo.
I don't think the S8 hardware design can be beat this year. It'll probably only be topped when Samsung makes the top&bottom bezels covered edges as well...
That's really interesting. Does that mean that every other app will actually display content on those edges that are covered by the rounded bezels and thus not visible to the user or has Samsung made software tweaks to avoid that?
heh, I should have continued with the rest of the anandtech quote:
...Third-party apps, however, find their vertical dimensions constrained to the purely rectangular portion of the display, with the status bar above and the navigation bar below taking on black backgrounds.
Samsung App
Third Party App
However, this is Android so there are easy fixes available e.g. Cornerfly and
Navbar Apps can provide rounded corners and change the background of the Navbar, respectively, even without root.
Despite those options, I'm not sure Samsung made the right choice to go with a transparent menubar&navbar. Obviously On Screen menu buttons are a step backwards for immersion compared to the hardware/capacitive buttons of previous Galaxy phones. S8 is using SAMOLED (while Mi Mix/G6 are using LCDs) so I think the black background for the menubar&navbar (with curved edges following the lines of the device) would be great for the S8 as they would blend into the bezel. Sure it would make the top&bottom bezels seem larger but it would also make the screen content itself more immersive.
Of course the best option would be to just get rid of the OS chrome and reduce the menubar icons to a dynamic minimum like early windows phone 7:
I don't think any mobile OS is that courageous today
