I’m coming into Overlord cold as I don’t do manga or j-novels. So I expected something like a reverse Sword Art or Log Horizon.
What I found was something in ways better. The first and second seasons really made me like Ains and start to like his murderous troops. In season 3 this show has taken me off the rails. I’ve loved almost every character in S3 yet I can’t stop appreciating the evil that is spilling out as well hoping it’s going to tie into something big.
So honestly I don’t get what you are saying. Maybe it’s because you came into it with completely different expectations.
I quite like the characters and what's happening actually. It's the writing and how most of the stuff itself is really just going through the motions rather than trying to make each into their own memorable thing that I have a problem with. With a few adjustments to how certain things occur, the same point could be conveyed but it'd be shown to us rather than told. There's a lot of examples thus far but a pretty easy one would be with Sebas in Season 2
Sebas takes on the Six Arms or whatever while trying to rescue Tuare. Their encounter ends up finishing so quickly that those folks end up just looking like a bunch of mooks. If it weren't for their introduction, we wouldn't know any better at all. The novel version of this encounter handles it by giving a brief description of their abilities and some exploits, as I recall. So we find out that they're supposed to be powerful for New World characters which further enhances Sebas' overwhelming power compared to them. The actual encounter is also slightly different as one guy gets to make an attack, I think.
If the scene was changed a little bit so that Sebas says he'll give them a minute to go all out while he just dodges or stands there deflecting attacks then we as the viewer could see a demonstration of the abilities of the 4 to see what the New World could do before Sebas just ends them instantly. It would also give more time to Solution and the others in the building to do their job.

The above spoiler conveys the very same thing the author is doing but the information is built into the encounter itself so we're able to see it. It's more engaging as a result.
