Anti-Muslim hate crimes soar in London, tripling in wake of Paris attacks

Islamophobic offences in London have soared in the wake of the Paris attacks.

Shocking figures from the Metropolitan Police revealed that incidents of Islamophobia - mainly consisting of harassment - have tripled in the weeks following the attacks carried by the so-called Islamic State terror group.

The figures showed that in the week ending Tuesday 10 November, 24 incidents were recorded. Following the attacks on 13 November, this number rose to 46 in the week ending 17 November and again to 76 by 24 November.
The news comes days after an attempted arson attack on Finsbury Park Mosque, in north London. CCTV was released of a man in a white hooded jumper approaching the mosque will a bag containing a jerry can filled with petrol. He proceeded to attempt to set this alight before hurling it into the mosque compound.

The Met is treating the incident as an Islamophobic hate crime.

The latest figures tie in with a recent report from the Islamic Human Rights Commission, which claims that discrimination against Muslims in Britain has become so bad it is creating an "environment of hate”. The report showed a rise in the feeling that Muslims are being discriminated against both in day-to-day Islamophobic acts and government policies.

Between 2010 and 2014, the number of people who reported witnessing Islamophobia directed at someone else leapt from 50% to 82%.

In the same period, the number of people stating they had witnessed negative stereotypes about Islam and Muslims jumped from 69% to 93%.

Muslims have also reported that when they have been the victims of Islamophobic attacks, passersby often fail to offer any help.

Fiyaz Mughal, director of Tell MAMA (Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks), told The Huffington Post UK in October: “A lot of victims - this not just a one-off - are saying no one is helping them when they’re in trouble or when they are targeted. That’s a concern.

“Victims are saying ‘I wish somebody had called the police, I wish somebody had just asked me if I was okay.’ It doesn’t mean getting involved in the fray, just giving that reassurance. But people were just walking past. It doubles the impact of alienation and isolation within the community. It’s a them and us situation.”
Writing in the Guardian on Tuesday, Masuma Rahim said that she has never felt fearful in Britain until recently.

She said: “Sometimes I am amazed that I have never had a torrent of abuse thrown at me or been beaten up – yet.

“Because this run of good luck can’t last for ever, can it? One day it simply has to run out. People who look like me and speak like me are being given hell every day and I am not.”

The Met Police were keen to reassure Muslims that they were increasing their efforts to crack down on such crimes.

They said: “We know Muslim communities in London are feeling anxious and we are providing extra patrols and are speaking regularly with local mosques and community leaders to reassure and address concerns, while closely monitoring the situation.

"We work closely with organisations representing different faiths regarding hate crime issues and this includes TellMAMA for Islamophobic incidents.

"We will not tolerate hate crime and no one should suffer in silence. We urge people to report hate crime to us as soon as possible so we can act. We have more than 900 specialist officers across London working in our Community Safety Units who are dedicated to investigating hate crime.

"If you can’t tell us - report to a third party like Tell MAMA via The Mayor of London’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) hate crime app.”

Thats the answer to the problem of Islamic radicals, public harassment of random Muslims.
What fucking mind numbing stupidity.
But then this is what ISIS wanted, to destroy the social fabric of western countries.

Wasn't there a story about a gang beating up a pregnant woman?

Maybe unrelated, my memory is awful right now.

I think that was in North London when a woman threatened to attack a pregnant Muslim woman on a bus. But I think an actual attack did happen on a pregnant woman in France earlier this year, it's on google, I can't link because of Daily Fail. You might have mixed them up mistakenly.

just fantastic..

at my work place there are plenty of muslims, and i've noticed some of them don't say hello back anymore.. just stare blankly ahead or at the floor. it's kind of unnerving. are they afraid, frozen with fear? sure seems like it :/

i honestly don't consider Europe all that civilized anymore. i'm ashamed of my fellow Finns especially, i've heard so much disgusting hatespeak lately that i'm starting to react physically to it.. i'm constantly fuming in my head. i cannot fucking stand these racist pieces of shit anymore. just FUCK YOU, you are ruining everything.

Hmm, hasn't that organization, Tell MAMA, been discredited in a lot of their reporting?

Not saying anti-Muslim bigotry isn't on the rise in the UK, but they've definitely been accused of greatly inflating their statistics before, counting minor seemingly innocuous events as "acts of islamophobia".

is the source for this really that trustworthy? I mean the figures given are fairly broad and generic, almost transferable to anything.

They want holy war, so yeah, they want people to hate and target muslims.

Then what? What if there's a "holy" war? They will just sit back and eat popcorn while watching? What is their endgame?

Fuck isis.. Not capitalizing the fucking name either.

These are pretty fucked up times thanks to a stupid ass group and now people who are Muslim and have nothing to do with this are going to be hated and targeted even more than before.

Why does hate fucking exist?

I always wonder how I would react in a situation like this (seeing someone being treated like shit).

I would hope that I would stop and help out and tell the aggressor to fuck off, but it is also easy for me see myself not wanting to get involved and just continued to walk away.

Death and destruction. I think they believe they'll be the ones to come out on top in this chaos.

That or it's because they're delusional fanatics.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Isn't the organization that released these statistics the same organization that awarded Charlie Hebdo the "Islamophobes of the Year 2015" award a few weeks after the massacre?

Their Wikipedia page contains some questionable information about them. I'd take their opinions with a grain of salt.

Should we expect the Knight templars and another Crusade as well?

This is getting ridiculous..

Nah, thankfully the West is largely apathetic towards religion.

I can't imagine a Crusade 2.0 happening in this day and age.

Lol think of all that propaganda ISIS would then advertise.

My dad and I were hoping to travel abroad for business purposes next year, but with all that's been going on recently...nah, think we'll just stay here in our country. Shit's scary man.

Being Muslim isn't the easiest thing right now for all the dumb shit Isis is doing. I know enough people who are afraid to even have a beard or how women aren't wearing scarf to avoid all the drama.

It's pretty cliche to say this is exactly what the terrorists want...

...

...

however, this is exactly what the terrorists want.

The chart is labelled 2014 and as far as I'm aware the Paris attacks were this year?

Yep.

Bit of an oversight there right? lol.
The graph obviously refers to this broader point made in the article and quoted in the OP:
