Anyone here NEVER ownded the No 1 Console on the Market? (at the time)

Note: Feel free to skip to the "Summary" if you don't feel like reading all of this. This is just to explain my reasoning for why I have never really owned the most commercially successful or No 1 console of a particular time period.

-----

I've always had an interest in videogames since the Apple II days but was never allowed to purchase a console until about 1996 when the SNES was in it's final year or so. The game that I had to own was DKC. The graphics just amazed me at the time (and still do) and the gameplay was incredibly additctive and fun, even if the gameplay isn't too complex. Also picked up the SNES with Mario All-Stars.

This pretty much turned me into a huge Nintendo fan and when the N64 was unveiled with Mario 64 I just had to have it.

The N64 turned out to be a reasonably popular console and I had a LOT of fun with it. It was never as highly regarded or as popular as the Playstation though. It did have a few stand out games that were very popular with a lot of casuals like Goldeneye and Mario Kart.

I swore I would never buy a non-Nintendo console from this point on because of the many amazing games I experienced on the n64 like Mario 64, Zelda: OoT, Wave Race, Goldeneye etc etc.

But after only 3 or 4 years the N64's software releases were just few and far between. I just couldn't wait what would have been about 2 years for the next Nintendo console. I never liked Playstation and I couldn't deal with the crappy graphics so I bought a Dreamcast with Soul Calbiur and Rush 2049 and had some great times with it. Once again, it turned out not to be the most popular console on the market.

I bought a Gamecube on launch in Australia and was pretty dissapointed with the software after I had gotten used to the amazing graphics. Plus the GCN began to really struggle in Australia (equivalent of Xbox in Japan now) so I looked

to import one from the US on the recommendation from a friend. Turned out to be one of the best gaming decisions. I received games far far cheaper and months in advance with a much bigger selection of titles to choose from.

I have been pretty happy with the quanity of software for the GCN though as it's a huge step up from the N64's lack of software. But I received an Xbox for free as part of a deal in doing a course. Got it modded and love Xbox Media Centre and all the wonderful things you can do on it. Plus it's great for 3rd party games because you usually get the best version.

Summary:

Basically, to sum it up, I've never really had the No 1 console ever. I suspose you could count the SNES but I only had it very late in it's life.

I've own(/ed):

SNES (very short amount of time)
Nintendo 64
Dreamcast
GameCube
Xbox

Is there anyone else here that's never had the No 1 console of the time? I'd imagine it would be hard for most ppl not to have had the most popular console at some stage, particually those ppl who have been playing consoles since the NES days or sooner. How could you NOT own a NES during that time?

The sad thing is you're missing out on so many unbelievably fantastic games that I actually feel sorry for you.

Yes, I never owned a C64. I chose Spectrum. I still played C64 games almost every day, mind you.

Never owned a SNES or NES either, but that doesn't really count, since C64/Spectrum and Amiga were the biggest platforms in Europe during that time.

SNES - I got it about 2 years before you did..
N64 - a year or so after release
GBC - Don't remember
GBA - Bought it last year
GCN - Bought it a couple of years ago
Xbox - Bought it release day

Sony systems are overrated. Flame me if you wish, but the games on GCN and Xbox surpass the quality of those on the PS2.

I skipped NES and Playstation.

During NES days I found games on Commodore 64 much much more interesting. And during PS1 era I skipped the console scene altogether. I was a PC gamer back then. =)

I can sum up this with the arguement "what you don't know won't hurt you". Or rather, I don't know what I'm missing so i will never miss it.

To me, there are just too many great games to play these days that you just can't possibly play them all. There will always be many great games you won't get to play even if you own all the consoles. This is because of time and money. The amount of ppl that complain about their 50+ game backlog proves this. Most won't get around to playing most of their backlog, and even if they do, I doubt they'll be able to put the time into each game, that it deserves.

Even if you've owned only the No 1 console of the time from the Playstation 1 era you would have missed out on games like Mario 64, Zelda OoT, Goldeneye, Wave Race, Halo, Halo 2, Ninja Gaiden, etc etc. There's simply too many to list. All FANTASTIC games.

For me, not owning a Playstation only limits me from playing Final Fantasy and the GT series. Both of which I don't really like but appreciate that they are good games. Grand Theft Auto series appears on Xbox eventually anyway, which is the only Playstation "exclusive" I really care about. And so what if it takes awhile to get to play them. I bet most ppl have a decent backlog to deal with.

I can't picture gaming life not having owned a PSX. I had so many awesome experiences on that console. I'm still not done with my PSX backlog.

I never got a PSX/PS1 until 2 years after I got a PS2.
I also didn't officially own an N64 until I recently got a used one for like $20.
I played PC games.

Late adopter of Playstation 1 (1999). Mainly picked it up for Square RPG's and Metal Gear Solid. Also never owned PS2. My friend has generously lent me his PS2 for months, because he uses his roommate's. So basically I've supported Nintendo first and foremost since NES, though I did have good times with NHL Hockey on my brother's Genesis back in 91 or so.

First Sega system I owned was the one I bought, the Dreamcast, first Sony system I owned, was the one I bought, the PS2. I had NIntendo the rest of the way. I buy all now

I got my PSX in '95. Back when basically the mainstream didn't know what the hell it was. I've pretty much had every major console, excluding the PS2. I had so much fun with my DC, and when the PS2 came out, I was like "what's the big deal?" The graphics didn't look any better. In fact, at the time, a lot of DC games looked better. I wasn't attracted to any of the titles, and I'm still not really.

Seems to me that if you are enjoying the games on a system that is a remote #2 or #3 console, you would probably also be enjoying the games on the #1 system. Very strange that there are still people that think Sony consoles are just for Final Fantasy and Gran Turismo....

I've owned pretty much every system that was an important competitor in the market, and a couple that weren't (Saturn, Dreamcast).

Genesis
Game Gear
Saturn
Nintendo 64
Dreamcast
Gamecube
Xbox

PS2 I gave up after my third one (stolen, stolen, broke down)

Only two blemishes.

1. Gameboy, but it was around for 10 years, how could I not own one?
2. SNES, though technically a tie with Genesis, so not that bad.

Absolutely everything else was not #1

1978-83 (this was my parents doing since I wasnt born)
#1 Console on market - Atari
We owned - Collecovision and Intellevision

1986-90
#1 Console on market - NES
We owned - Sega Master System

1990-96
#1 Console on market - Tie
We owned - SNES only

1996-2000
#1 Console on market - PSX
We owned - N64

2000-2005
#1 Console on market - PS2
We owned - Gamecube and Xbox

Wow, I never even realized that!

Pretty much the same for me actually, except add Xbox to the little list. I'm considering getting one though, but I think I'm just going to hold out until more news about Xenon are released. I came pretty close to owning a DC too, I actually didn't decide to get one until after Sega announced that it was going to stop making units, blah blah blah, as I had looked into a few games at the time. My mom found out about it though, and refused to buy a console that wouldn't be supported, she felt it was a waste of money. Funny.

How about his lack of acknowledgement of Sega's existance?

lol ... yes, yes .. I guess that would be a good place to start.

For home consoles, I always bought Nintendo's machines. Not because of blind fanboyism, but mainly because I grew up with its heroes. Today, this one-sided support persists, caused by a lack of money and more than anything... time. The shame is I still don't know how to cope with that and I guess that I'm quite off-topic now.

16 bit days i had a genesis. didnt get an snes until about 2-3 years ago.
32 bit days i had a saturn. didnt get a psx until ridge racer type 4
128 bit days had a dreamcast. didnt get a ps2 until sega pretty much pulled the plug.
didnt get an xbox until i was extremely bored with the ps2 and gamecube.

i'd say any sega fan probably followed the same pattern of never really having the "#1" console.

i've never owned the #1 console on the market at the time.... i only buy nintendo thus far. started with the original gameboy.

Well, hmm. Another quote from you:

Sony sucks. Yeah, I hate sony. There crap is always broken at launch titles, and I don't trust their hardware.
It sounds to ME like you're just rabidly anti-Sony for whatever reason.

Personally, I find it hard to believe that NO PS2 game is of the same "quality" (whatever the hell THAT means) as games GCN and Xbox. Don't even attempt to say "well, as a WHOLE, PS2 games aren't as good" without some sort of objective metric to validate your claim.

Don’t want to come to his defence or anything, but there is no "objective metric" to one’s opinion or personal taste.

up until a few nights ago I've never owned a SNES

as of this moment I own a:
SMS (doesn't work, unfortunately)
NES
Genny (w/ 32X - never touched a Sega CD in my life)
SNES
GBA
NGPC
GBASP
PSx
PS2
N64
GC
XBox
PC

so I'm not really missing out on anything...though the ammount of games i've played on all the pre-PSX systems is pitiful (not counting Genny...played more than enough of those games through rentals or owning them)

outside of one time at Toys R Us playing some baseball game (i hate baseball games) I've never touched a Saturn or have seen any of its games in motion

I had a PS2, but sold it two years ago once I realized I only played my GC and Xbox. I am missing the newest GTA, but that will be out on Xbox soon. It's not that PS2 games suck, but the PS2 controllers do. Also, I only buy about 5 games a year, and Xbox/GC has enough great games to keep me busy.

ony systems are overrated. Flame me if you wish, but the games on GCN and Xbox surpass the quality of those on the PS2.

Why would you say such a foolish thing? That statement reeks of ignorance and lack of experience. It's one thing to PREFER a certain platform to another, but what you are suggesting is entirely different...

Junior Member indeed...

I eventually end up owning all the consoles that are on the market at the time. The only consoles I never got were the jaguar,3DO and neo geo. I really wanted the neo geo but that thing was sooo damn expensive. I don't won't to miss anything, that's how much I love gaming. Multi-console ownership....owns. :D

No Neo Geo? No cookie for you!

:( When it came out I was like 12 or something with a paper route as my only source of income. :( :( I wanted to play Metal Slug in the comfort of my own home sooo badly. :(

I've always chose the console that had games which fit my tastes best at that time.

For example I had an Intellivision when everyone else owned an Atari 2600.
The horse racing, poker and sports games were unmatched on the Atari 2600 at the time.

When everyone and their moms were buying up all the NES's, I was thrilled with my C64 and the litterally thousands of games I had for it. Most of which were from using copy disks, and me buying up others people entire collections.

When most were playing Genesis/SNES I was suffering/enjoying the Atari Jaguar which had only a few good games for it, but the ones that were good were unfreaking believable on a console at the time.
Ex: Doom, Aliens Vs. Predator, Raiden Project, Tempest

Dreamcast impressed the hell out of me when I was in EB to put a payment on a launch PS2.
It impressed me so much I said fuck the PS2 and dove into the DC scene full throttle.

Same thing this gen, I was planning on buying all 3, but ditched the PS2 when the DC gave me sooo many great games to keep me busy, and the moment I first saw the Halo video online I was sold on Xbox. Plus the GC was so cheap I couldn't pass it up, although I decided not to keep it in the long run.

It's like the poor blind and deaf kid who doesn't realize everyone is having a party right around him. You're a gamer, holmes. Play the great games, regardless of the platform :)

Oh, I understand your line of thought. I don't fault you for that. Doesn't prevent me from feeling bad about all the genuinely fantastic games you've missed out on. On top of which...

...thinking not owning a PSX only limits you to not playing GT, Final Fantasy and GTA is overwhelmingly ignorant. I do not exaggerate when I say some of the absolute greatest games ever have come out on these systems; some of which are almost as big of a travesty to overlook as some of the games you listed below.

Not to mention that since both PSX and PS2 are number one this generation you're almost completely missing out on the 'niche' gaming scene, which is often the haven for creativity and underrated titles. You'll never get to play a Katamari Damacy, Tomba!, Einhander or a Shin Megami Tensei. You'll never get to play an Ace Combat or a Devil May Cry or a Twisted Metal. You'll miss out on the huge vibrant Sony PSX/PS2 RPG scene, which is almost unarguably the greatest among the consoles. I just can't stress it enough. You're missing out on so much even if you don't know you are.

Indeed, which is why if you have so little time to play games you should diversify.
