Anyone here NEVER ownded the No 1 Console on the Market? (at the time)

Well well well...

Here are the systems I got, and when I got them (I still have them all)

MSX 1 (1984)
Master System (1989)
GameBoy (1989)
Atari 520 STf (1990)
Sega Megadrive (1990)
Amiga 500 (1992)
SNES (1992)
Amiga 1200 (1993)
3DO (1993)
NeoGeo (1994)
Sony PlayStation (1994)
Sega Saturn (1995)
Nec Duo-RX (1996)
Sega Dreamcast (1998)
Nintendo 64 (1998)
PlayStation 2 (2000)
GameBoy Advance (2001)
Gamecube (2003)
Gameboy Advance SP (2003)
JVC X-Eye (2004)
Xbox (2004)
Sega Nomad (2004)
GameBoy Advance SP Nes Edition (2004)
Nintendo DS (2004)
Sega GameGear (2004)

The current console I own is the XBOX, and the only other console I ever owned is a Game Gear. Although I consider them both to be superior to their competitors of the time, they weren't the #1 in their respective markets.

I owned an Amiga for long years but if anyone calls it a console I'm coming at them with the most convenient bashing material I can get my hands on..

I had an Amiga 500 during the time when every game and it's mother suddenly was only available for DOS formats (if only I had lived in Europe)

Still, I loved my machine. I still have it, actually.

Also I had a SMS before I had a NES, but for only one year. The old SMS had some real classics on it though. Never regreted the purchase.

Don’t want to come to his defence or anything, but there is no "objective metric" to one’s opinion or personal taste.
Well, of course.

He made the statement that the games on GCN and Xbox "surpassed the quality of those on PS2." The "metric" comment was aimed at the fact that he didn't define "quality" or bother to show that either a) no PS2 game had as much quality as a GCN or Xbox game or b) that, as a group, PS2 games were not as "quality" as the other two systems. I suspect that he meant b), but how in the world would you go about trying to back up that statement?

When the 2600 ruled, I had an Astrocade, then an Atari 800.

When the Nes came out, I had first an Atari ST, then an Amiga.

I lived on the Amiga and then a Lynx while the Genesis and SNES (and GameBoy) ruled.

I got a Sega CDX about the time that Nintendo took the definitive lead.

But I hopped on the Sony bandwagon right away and never got off, and have had many variations of Gameboy since.

So I parallel the original poster, but with Atari subbing in for Nintendo.

My actual progress is odd:

I had an Atari 800XL when the 2600 and later the C64 was very popular. Then I got rid of it and got an Amiga 500 when the SMS/NES craze was on.. I moved onto a 486 when People were mad about SNES and by the time I had my first Pentium I didn't have a clue about what was going on in the world of consoles. I slept through things like Saturn, Genesis, Nintendo64, Dreamcast without a single clue and was awakened by the original Playstation's boom, at which I laughed at and pointed at my PC rig which could do much better. The first real console I ever got was my XBOX. I got it because the PS2 games didn't appeal to me too much, the GC looked doomed and I wanted something I could play games with visitors on (PC isn't very good at this..) and use as a DVD player. The PC still is my primary gaming platform and will probably be that way all the time. I'll probably be getting the next gen console that has the most kinds of games I like when it drops to something about $150, and it will probably not be the #1..

I started with an NES in 1985.
Got a SNES I think the Christmas of the year it launched.
Didn't get a Genesis until much later.
Then I got the N64 in 1996.
PlayStation for Christmas in 1997 (for FF VII).
Dreamcast on 9.9.99.
PS2 for Christmas 2000.
Saturn I think I finally got in late 2001, but I'm not certain about that
Gamecube for Christmas 2001
Xbox for my birthday in May 2002

Handheld stuff I can't even begin to remember. I know I've owned the original brick Game Boy, a Game Gear, a Game Boy Advance, a Game Boy Advance SP, and a Nintendo DS, but if you asked me when I got any of the ones before the SP, I couldn't tell you.

Atari 7800 (1989)
Game Boy (1993)
Nintendo Entertainment System (1997)
Nintendo 64 (1998)
Game Boy Color (1999)
Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Summer 2000)
Sega Dreamcast (Fall 2000)
Game Boy Advance (Fall 2001)
Nintendo Gamecube (Fall 2001-Fall 2004)
Sony Playstation 2 (Winter 2002)
Sega Saturn (Summer 2002)
Sega Genesis (Fall 2002)
Sony PSOne (Fall 2003)
Microsoft Xbox (Spring 2004)
Game Boy Advance SP (Summer 2004)
Nintendo DS (Fall 2004)

Starting with the 8-bit era I tended to prefer the less popular system. Now i did OWN the 1* console but in the end sold them.. this Generation is the only time this has not happened.

8-bit era
NES ( after one year sold it for a Sega Master System)
Sega Master system ( i sold it for some Gensis games. I wished I still owned it)

16-bit era
Sega Gensis ( 1989)
Snes (1991) ( I sold the Snes and the games about either a year and a half or two years later)

32 bit era
Saturn (1995)
Playstation (1995) ( i sold the Playstation after playing Final fantasy7 and used the money to buy an N64)
N64 ( I sold it later to help buy the Dreamcast)

current Gen
Dreamcast (1999)
Playstation 2 (2002)
X-box (2004)

I don't plan to sell any of the current game machines. I am just going to wait for the price to go down on the next gen systems instead of jumping aboard the next gen consoles.

Ironicly I don't miss the NES, SNES or Playstaion. I would miss the Gensis, Saturn, and Dreamcast if I had sold them.

Well, the 16-bit era began with the TI-99/4A era didn't it? :)

Atari 400
TI-99/4A
SNES
Dreamcast
PlayStation 2 (three, two USA, one JPN)
Xbox (two, one USA, one JPN)

Skipped the NES 8-bit and PlayStation era -- gamed on PC.

...thinking not owning a PSX only limits you to not playing GT, Final Fantasy and GTA is overwhelmingly ignorant. I do not exaggerate when I say some of the absolute greatest games ever have come out on these systems; some of which are almost as big of a travesty to overlook as some of the games you listed below.

Not to mention that since both PSX and PS2 are number one this generation you're almost completely missing out on the 'niche' gaming scene, which is often the haven for creativity and underrated titles. You'll never get to play a Katamari Damacy, Tomba!, Einhander or a Shin Megami Tensei. You'll never get to play an Ace Combat or a Devil May Cry or a Twisted Metal. You'll miss out on the huge vibrant Sony PSX/PS2 RPG scene, which is almost unarguably the greatest among the consoles. I just can't stress it enough. You're missing out on so much even if you don't know you are.

Oh I'm not that ignorant that I would think that the only games I'm missing out on are GT and Final Fantasy. I KNOW I'm missing out on many other great games. But I don't know specifically what I'm missing out on, which is why I don't care nor miss them. That's my point. Maybe it's "selective" ignorance?

If I were to recommend a console to a casual gamer it would be PS2 everytime. I can't see why anyone would want a GC out side of Nintendo games (which seem to be an aquired taste these days) and the odd 3rd party title like RE4. PS2 has by far the biggest range of games. I would recommend an Xbox to someone over a GC as well, particually if you were interested in modding it.

I know in my heart I'd want to recommend a GC to someone foremost, as if to "help" good ol Nintendo out in these hard times (particually in the Australian market) but I don't think that's the right thing to do. I don't many casuals can respect Nintendo games or are even willing to give them a go in most cases due to their childish nature. Many ppl acknowledge on message boards that Nintendo's games are some of the best in the world, but if you tried to convincing a casual gamer that, then they would laugh in your face.

I've gone waaaay of topic somehow. I'll honestly look seriously at getting all 3 systems next gen. I'll actually have a proper job by then and will be able to afford it.

NES
Genesis
N64
Dreamcast
Gamecube

So except for NES, I've never owned the #1 system. I've gotten more than enough enjoyment out of these systems though. NES was awesome of course, especially when you're 5. By the time the PS/N64 era came around, I regretted asking my parents for a Genesis instead of a SNES, but other than that, I've been fine with my choices. N64 in my opinion was better than PS (for my tastes). DC was breathtaking while it lasted. GC has had its gems. Although, I've cut back on my videogame time in the past year or so. Otherwise, I would have definitely bought a PS2. There are just so many great games. Tons of them for 20 bucks or less as well.

8bit: NES
16bit: SNES
32bit: Sega Saturn
Next Gen: Dreamcast

I'd say I owned the #1 systems of their respective eras. Although SNES/Gennie is arguable. I still need to get one...
