Apple’s Fall iPhone Event To Be Held Sept. 9

The phones work well with 1GB, would it work better with 2? Surely but its not like its a disaster now for people. However its not just as simple as adding more RAM, Apple probably couldn't source enough for the 6 to make it 2GB.

2gb for the 6s would be better than nothing, but maybe they'll wait until 7 since that will be seen as a bigger upgrade.

The RAM issue would actually be a deal breaker for me, the next phone I grab I want to last me 3+ years and 1GB wouldn't cut it on iOS. I know my 5C has other bottlenecks, but keeping stuff in memory is a big issue for it especially when web browsing. Only going to continue to get worse. But I can't imagine Apple sticking with 1GB of RAM, that would be pure insanity as Android starts reaching 4GB.

RAM won’t be seen as a big upgrade for the vast, vast majority of potential customers. Only to a few people.

If they put it in the 6s, great. They won’t even mention RAM regardless of which phone version gets it.

Using taptic feedback from the mac would be a battery hog so I don't see them using it in the iphones just yet. The new phones will feature the "vibration" taptic engine from the apple watch though and that may end up being useful to some racing games.
Yeah. I don't think Apple wants Force Touch and Taptic Engine ever to be unpaired, but clearly there are fancier versions of each feature.

And yeah, RAM, battery, and storage are basically the three remaining bottlenecks facing iOS devices (though battery life is less of an issue on the 6 Plus and iPads and you can buy your way out of storage). iOS works so nicely with the iPad Air 2's 2GB RAM and it'll be great when it's standard across the board.

Pretty much every iPhones user I know complains about website reloads or app crashes. Especially those who visit image intensive message boards or use use image intensive apps.

Ram would be a huge upgrade to the majority of iPhone users. Whether they know ram is the major thing that improves their experience is another question.

Got some funds put aside in order to preorder the 6S as soon as it gets put up. Can't wait. My 5 has treated me well, but it's long due for an upgrade.

My 6 Plus still gets ridiculous battery life, and 64GB + Cloud is doing just fine storage-wise.

The reloads have honestly not been a big problem for me, but I could see how they might affect some people. I've had phones with 2-3GB of RAM that handle multitasking worse than my 6 Plus (in terms of reloads) - I feel like memory management goes a long, long way. I'll be interested to see how the 6 Plus and 6S Plus compare head to head in terms of multitasking when they're both on iOS9. And like you mentioned, I've heard (not experienced personally) that the iPad Air 2 does better.

one of those rumors is correct, yes
Guessing 16gb it is then? Sigh, I know I don't even fill up storage very quickly but having more would be a much better future proof.

64gb for me is overkill but 32gb is the magic number. Think I could survive 18 months with just 16gb? I use a lot of cloud services for storage but my main worry is OS updates that sometimes take up like 2gb.

Of course it will have 2gb RAM.

That is why the only reason iPad Air 2 is the only device that currently will support the multi tasking feature on IOS9.

When is the next iOS being launched out of beta? Any chance it's coming out in schedule with this week? I'm about to reformat my iphone and ipad. I want to wait until the new OS launches.

I don't think RAM is the actual problem but rather performance. The iPad Air 2 is a beast in the CPU/GPU departments.

In before the haptic feedback is on the home button...

Man that sounds like an Apple PR excuse.

"Your phone's OS is so good, that giving you more RAM would just be an insult!"

I can understand the diminishing returns on screen resolution and the toll it takes on battery life, but there really isn't a good defense for a small amount of RAM considering the premium you pay for these phones.
Both things are true, Android is stupidly hungry for any kind of resources and 1GB of ram on iOS devices has been stupidly limiting for a couple of years.

6 Plus is terrible to use for multitasking, thanks to the low amount of RAM.

I'm fairly certain he is talking about the "two apps at once" feature and not keeping old app states in memory.

They really do need to up the baseline. My gf isn't a heavy app or music user and she gets the warnings for storage.

^ Apple doesn't even list ram specs for iPhone on their tech specs page. You have to get it from a tear down. The 1GB ram in my 6+ does everything I ask it to do quickly too.

I am thinking that I will probably take advantage of the AT&T next deal and upgrade my 6+ to a 6s+ if Apple wows me.

You guys are crazy. Between the new Music app and Safari, apps are constantly reloading for me. 2GB of RAM will take care of that problem, and everything will be fine, but I'm personally ready for 4GB of RAM so that you can use phones and tablets like you do desktops and NEVER have to worry about RAM flushing behavior.

will they announce an iOS9 that isn't horrible? minor system changes in exchange for broken apps is the current state of the beta. urgh.

edit: I just saw public beta 3 is available. maybe this one isn't hot garbage.

Ugh that's par for the course using a beta. Apps will work by the time iOS9 is out of beta.

Believe it or not, the whole point of beta testing is to iron out bugs and make sure developers can get their apps fully functioning for the public release. It isn't actually just there for people to try it out for shits and giggles before the rest of the world gets their hands on it.

Can't wait. I love my Nexus 5 and will keep it as back up but I really want to go back to iPhone. Gonna get me an iPhone 6S+ in space grey. Not sure what capacity though.

6s will definitely have 2GB RAM. It won't be touted as a big deal though - because honestly, it isn't.

I think it is! My phone runs out of ram all the time while browsing or switching apps. It'd be a big difference to me, likely bigger than anything else they could do with the phone.

It is.

1GB is a joke. It's great if you only want to have 1 maybe 2 apps running at a time. Otherwise it cripples the device.

2GB is the absolute minimum needed. If Apple act like idiots and keep 1GB RAM I'll forget about upgrading.

You know a beta isn't a demo, right?

I am excited to get a iphone 6s. I am absolutely sick of android and google. Hopefully the new camera is a big jump.
I'm not sick of Android... Just bored... I've been customizing stuff for so long on Android that I think I just want to be lazy for two years with a 6s

Seems like you have no idea of what a beta is.

Pressure sensitive screen? Someone fill me in here please, can it be used for games too?

I felt the same way when I switched from Firefox to Chrome. Firefox is so flexible in its customization since the entire UI is HTML based so you could use CSS in extensions to make it look however you want and move parts all over the place. Something no other browsers can do. But I went overboard. Minimized the UI to nothing except an addressbar and tab bar next to it (Actually like how IE is now. This was years before MS did it.) It was glorious. But it was a mess. When Chrome came along and it was all kinds of newness I jumped right on. Now I don't really miss all the customization.

I used to have Android too and would customize stuff, but it never felt like I really needed to. Sure I do wish iOS would let you do more with the UI but I like it how it is and Apple is doing a good enough job of slowly opening things up for customization.

Oh you better believe it. It'll be as usable as the gyroscope is. It'll probably also be really useful in drawing apps. Though I don't know if it'll be as granular as say a Cintiq with 256 levels or whatever but it'll have its uses.

Thanks man, can't wait to see how it works

So this whole thing about Force Touch had my wondering the other day after I saw a demo / mockup of how it could work on some website... what exactly is the difference between force touch and pressure sensitivity vs, say, long presses? It seems to me that it's kind of not necessary since they both accomplish the same thing? And I would think that pressing harder on the screen would only make it morel likely to be damaged, right?

oh ok thanks. guess i will just buy current model then

http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#MacBook_Pro

Depends upon what you want to buy. Apple has been updating their laptops at irregular intervals recently. The MBP used to get updated in the fall for a few years but most recently it was updated in May. Skylake just came out but the processors seem to be mostly underwhelming compared to what we thought we were going to get. It's possible we will see a Skylake speed bump update this fall but not guaranteed.

I feel like shareholders have made Apple too predictable. I remember staying up till 3am to watch the pressers live.

I'm really excited about the Apple Watch and iPhone 7. But the S versions are mainly for people desperate to upgrade.

In any case, hopefully 32GB becomes their entry level option.

I disagree. The S versions have always interested me more than the even releases and been a way more enticing upgrade option. While the even releases bring about the form factor changes most of the exciting hardware upgrades and fine tuning comes with the S iterations.

And I still stay up till 3AM to watch their keynotes live.

I dunno, the internal upgrades always seem just as meaningful in the S versions as they are in the regular iterations. Just no physical redesign, which is fine. Only so many ways to build black rectangles. An A9, 2Gb of RAM, and Force Touch seem like pretty great upgrades to me.I wouldn't upgrade from a 6 or 6+, but I doubt many people upgrade every single year.

Force Touch is less finicky than long press and has better accuracy overall. Ever tried to highlight something with a long press and ended up highlighting the wrong thing or highlighted too much?

There is also the potential that with some apps force touch can become an entirely new input.
