Can I just install iTunes on my server to stream my music collection to the iPad?

as of iOS 4.3 you can use the home sharing feature in itunes and stream the entire music and video library to the ipad or iphone.

Words With Friends needs a landscape mode. :(

Is there a decent way to upload images to a TinyPic like service from iPad?

I haven't received my ipad yet to try but from what I have read icab browser is supposed to do image uploads.

How does one do this? I have home sharing turned on, but can't seem to figure out how to get my iPad to connect.

Edit: Never mind, figured it out. I couldn't tell that the gray Library thing was tappable, but it is.

settings > ipod > enter itunes account info to enable home sharing.

then in the ipod app, tap on the new house icon above your library to select from all the shared libraries in the house. (ditto for videos)

itunes is 10.2 and above

Thanks. It wasn't obvious to me at first that the Library bar was a control. Coming from a PC world, I'm still sometimes confused by the subtlety of the iOS interface.

Most of iOS is obvious.

this feature is subtle. I would say that it's too subtle. that library selector thing should be more obvious (as well as the location to enter your itunes credentials).

anyway, it's a cool feature. since I rarely take my ipad out of the house, it made the 16 GB model a much easier sale for me.

I've been loving my iPad and my wife's Macbook Air, but every once in awhile I just can't find something.

I've been getting access to the same files with File Browser, but it's interface sucks, and I'm having to browse the raw files so no playlists or album covers. Attaching to iTunes is ideal.

Speaking of which, is anyone else experiencing a small bug - I think it's related to the library bar. When I have a song with the 'now playing box' at the bottom left, occasionally, it covers up the playlists list such that the very bottom playlists are covered by the now playing box, and I can't access it. It's like the list is BEHIND the now playing box, and the software doesn't recognise that the now playing box is there. I can scroll up, but it rubberbands back behind the box.

To temporarily fix it, I have to switch libraries and switch back.

Stupid question time: can the iPad/iPad 2 run every iPhone app (in the event an iPad-specific version of the app wasn't created)?

pretty much. ipad 1 can't run camera apps. ipads without gps can't run gps apps.

What good app lets you edit PDFs AND Powerpoint? I'm looking for a viable alternative to printing out notes and writing on them in class. If it lets you draw notes in addition to typing text, that would be a huge bonus.

iAnnotate is an amazingly well organized, customisable app. I'm not sure it supports .ppt, but surely it's a fairly easy conversion to pdf?

Damnit why doesn't someone make an app do both? You'd think there is a huge demand, all the college kids who have iPads would be interested in an app that could do .ppt and .pdf editing.

Is there a way to setup video playlists on the iPad/IPhone or do I need to download a media player app that has the functionality? if so what?

Can't you just save ppt as PDF?

But yeah, in an ideal world there should be one that does both. Your uni really ought to provide PDFs. ;)

iAnnotate has an "experimental" pdf, webpage and .doc import feature. I haven't used it, apparently it can be buggy, but yeah, it will assumably one day become a 'real' feature.

Heh. A couple days ago I remember when I was writing up an email on my iPad and I wanted to save it as a draft. I sat there for 5 minutes looking for a save draft button before I hesitatingly said fuck it and hit "cancel" when I was presented with a "Save Draft" and "Delete Draft" option.
:lol

So hard to find these in stock anywhere. I've been lurking on the reservation site for my local Apple Store but they're almost always sold out - if they're not then it's for a model I'm not interested in :/ Patience is key I guess!

Re: firmware update. No longer have 3G no found problems and the speeds feel normal. 4.32. Thank god. It was getting annoying.

For those of you with a zinio acount for the mags - check your spam/inbox. I just did and noticed that they sent me a $5 loyalty code. :) Going to get a $10 subscription to some entertainment thing or another. Maybe esquire.. I'm looking it up now.

Question for you guys (since I can't make a decision for myself). I have the neoprene Kensington Sleeve for my iPad. And while its fine for sitting around my house, I'm worried it might be too thin and not offer enough protection for my flight next week. Should I get a sturdier/harder case? And if so, any suggestions?

So... A 6" iPad which officially supports stylus input and dual boots iOS and Mac OS X Lion will be released this September?
I think the exception to the rule is the safe assumption that Apple would never release things that no one in their right mind would buy.

So I'm currently on a road trip with the fam, sitting in the back with my wifi iPad 2, connected to you fine people with the magic of MyWi on a jb iPhone 4. It's the first time I've used MyWi outside of when I first got it to test it out. And I've only been doing some light browsing, email, and text editing a ~40kb HTML file. Up until 10 minutes ago, the Up/Down reading on MyWi was around 40mb/10mb. I just checked it again and now it's reading 4083mb/4051mb. 4 fucking gigs? There's no possible way I've pulled that kind of traffic if for no other reason than it would take at least a couple days of constant heavy use to hit that on this edge network in rural Georgia.

Has anyone else had that happen? My iPhone usage stats say I've downloaded ~500mb in the last 20 days, but I'm still curious where MyWi is getting that from. Also a little paranoid about AT&T getting the wrong idea and forcing a cap on my unlimited account now.

Just picked up an iPad 2. If anyone is in the Irvine area, the UCI bookstore seems to have a couple Verizon 3G models that don't seem to be selling.

Have a question on Apps:

Is there an App that allows me to write papers on my iPad, send it to my Windows computer, and open it on Microsoft Word without too much trouble?

Also, aside from http://ipadappsthatdontsuck.com posted in the OP, are there any other good websites that review iPad app? Or even App suggestions from here would be much appreciated.

Pages works really well. It's the official Apple one. I did up my resume on it. I recommend sticking to the templates they provide.

You could use something like PlainText or Writer, both save documents in your dropbox, so opening them somewhere else would be rather easy.

So here is my Dilemma...

I bought a 16GB WiFi iPad 2, and I noticed some pretty major light leaking (posted about it earlier). I don't really care enough about it to return the iPad, but I am thinking perhaps because of the light leak I could go into Apple and ask to have my 16GB traded up to a 32GB (I'd pay the difference).

Do you think they would allow that? I really thought 16GB would be enough for me, but I am learning quickly that apps, games, magazines, movies, etc take up a LOT of space.

I recently had this issue with my 16GB I bought from Best Buy. I was happy with it but I noticed a lot of lag with the touch screen when I ran games, apps, etc,. and the backlight had a leak issue. I took it back a few days ago, and after a long wait in line, I explained to the associate that I don't want my refund but just wanted to get a new one. I also explained to her that I know that the wait was going to be a week or so and I didn't care; I just didn't feel comfortable paying $500 for a iPad 2 that I want to keep for atleast two years and it already has problems within the first week of use.

She gave me a light shifty-eye look and escorted me to the Geek Squad (aka one of the biggest electronic aid scammers in modern day history) and he noticed that the screen wasn't acting right and for the first time, new problems started to happen (video started freezing, apps not opening, etc,.). Then he escorted me BACk to Customer Service and she did the refund and placed me on the reserve list for a new one. I told her since the wait was going to be long, could I just simply change it to the 32GB and I'll pay the difference. She said sure and did so. Now, I'm on a 1-2 week waiting period for my new iPad to come.

All in all, it always depend on your approach. I've worked Retail for over 6 years and can confidently say that the rules set in place at (mostly) any given store are not set in stone. If the people at Apple won't allow you to switch over, ask to speak to a manager. Explain how you spend your hard earned cash on a product that is not cheap and would want to have a product you are truly happy with. Explain, also, that since there is a wait, could they let you get a model with more memory and you pay the difference. In the long run, they are getting more of your money and most retailers look at that act of kindness as a lead to more business from you. If it doesn't work with that manager, you could always go above him. At the end of the day, just make sure you stand firm and confidently in your convictions and all should work out.

You should've just gone to Apple if you could. They'd replace it for you.

Um, I not quite getting your story. Were you expecting not to get a refund? Did you get any 'special' treatment; perhaps no restocking fee (even though there shouldn't be one for a defective product)?

I'm sorry that I wasn't too clear :/

The Customer Service people were giving me the eye when I came in with my iPad 2, in near mint condition, in the original box. I wanted to reassure the associate that I didn't want a cash refund but just an exchange when they get one in stock. Too many retailers nowadays seem to be too leery about people doing returns and even when I tried to explain what was wrong with it, she wanted the geniuses at Geek Squad to reaffirm what I said was wrong with it (the guy was actually nice but I just had a problem with the practices of GS). After he reaffirmed what I told her, she offered to give me my refund (which I made clear I didn't want from the beginning) and took the next 5 to 10 minutes, looking for the form that she had to fill for me to reserve a new one (she was nice but took forever to find the paperwork). I told her I just wanted to reserve a different size model and she told me it wasn't a problem. The only special treatment I wanted was for them to finish the process faster (took about 30 minutes and that's not including the wait in line).

I thought about it but figured it would be easier to go back to Best Buy, return my defective one and reserve the 32gb model. Plus, all three of the Apple Stores in my Metro area are way too far away.

Walked into the store and picked up a 32GB white iPad 2 today :D luck was with me I guess, they had got a shipment in this morning.

Apologies if I'm re-asking a question, but...

My iPad is on firmware 4.3 and has gestures enabled. If update to the latest 4.3.2, will I lose the gestures? It's the only reason I haven't updated so far.....

No, the gestures remain enabled.

What are the iPad gestures? What are they for?

You can use 4 finger gestures to enable certain actions, similar to Apple's trackpads.
On the iPad, 4 fingers swiped left or right switches between open apps, a swipe up reveals the multitasking bar and a pinch returns you to the home screen. The gestures entirely do away for the need of the home button and speed up the whole experience by a surprising amount.

SmokyDave said:
Are gestures enabled through 'settings' or do I need some nefarious trickery?
You need XCode.
they can be re-enabled by turning your iPad into a developer iPad by using Apple’s Xcode developer tools. Some people say that you had to pay $5 to get Xcode 4 from the Mac App Store, but our very own Samuel Gibbs found that the free-to-download Xcode 3 works just fine.

To unlock iOS 4.3′s gesture controls on your iPad, download and install Xcode 3/4, open Xcode, connect your iPad to your PC, then Window > Organizer and press the “Use for development” button.
