I'm stuck in the "picking" stage; seriously can't figure out what model to get, ugh. I want to direct some a general question to you iPad 2 owners: how "easy" is it to fill up the space on it? What's wiser, going with a 16/32 GB model or splurging the cash for a Wifi-only 64 GB model?

get 32 GB.

64 is only really necessary if you’re going to have a ton of movies on there all at once and take it out of the house a lot.

remember, while on your home network, you can use home sharing to stream all your music and iTunes videos to the device.

16 GB is a little crammed if you plan to have more than a dozen 500 MB or so games on it and if you have any interest in monthly or weekly magazines, they can take up around 200 to 600 MB each.

I went for the 32GB and really the first 16GB goes fast with music and stuff. The rest is harder to fill since its mostly for apps for me but I would not have been able to use just 16GB. I think 64 is a bit overkill though as you can stream most movies and stuff.

Do you play a lot of games on your iPhone? Do you find you fill up your iPhone?

I filled up my 16gb iPad 1 with so many games and apps that I went for the 32 gb the second time around. But 16gb is still enough, it will just be a hassle if you have a lot of stuff. Active management. A good tip is to leave all your music on just your phone. Since you probably won't take many photos with it, that saves space as well.

But I think iOS 5 will make it a lot easier--you can just delete apps, photos and music off your device and restore them much more quickly if you decide you need it back without having to connect back to your computer.

New Yorker app works just like every other Adobe Platform published iPad magazine. except file sizes are smaller (~150 MB) since it’s a smaller weekly mag.

swipe left to right to advance sections. up and down to read an article. there’s less wackiness in the New Yorker than there is with, say, Wired which uses the same publishing platform but has more embedded videos and interactive tappable bits and bobs.

I have no issue with the speed or layout of these apps - they work OK for me. worst parts about them are the large file sizes and the lack of text interaction. I.e. no text selection or accessibility features as it’s all a big image.

I'd probably avoid the 16 GB if you're going to play a lot of the more substantial games on it (Infinity Blade, Dead Space HD, etc.), but for a ProTip: if you put music in your iPad, set it to convert to 128 kbps AAC (unless I guess you're an audiophile or something) to save space and have a nice amount of music you want.

Here's a stupid question:

I DLed the EGM Digital app, but I don't have any subscription with them. I tapped the newest issue and it began DLing. Did I, uh, pay for it?

Oh, so nothing special. I don't think I look at a lot of Adobe published mags.

EGM Digital is free, ain't it?

The weekly EGMi issues are free.

they have not yet added the paid monthly magazines but those will be available if you get a magazine sub at some future date.

Thanks for the answers guys, seems like I'll aim towards the 32 GB model. I already have a 64 GB iPod Touch (3rd gen w/o retina) and a 16 GB iPhone 4, so it's safe to say that I won't listen to much music on the iPad when I get it. But I assume I can also stream music without any issues, not just videos, right?

Also, I have a minor follow-up question: how handicapped do you actually feel when you don't have a 3G-equipped model and you want to take the iPad out of your home? Are there many cool applications where 3G is essentially... essential?

I can count on one hand the number times I wished my iPad had 3G and half of those times were for maps/GPS. So if you have an iPhone and a data plan I don't really see it ever being an issue. But maybe that's just me.

To your first question: You can stream music with something like Zumocast, but it actually seems like there are less options for music streaming apps compared to video streaming just in general.

Yeah, I totally agree. I have an iPhone 4 with 3G service so I really can't find a use for 3G on my iPad apart from media streaming. But even then, it's negligible. I can't imagine a time where I will ever had my iPad and NOT my iPhone.

In that case you're right about ZumoCast, but I believe they took it down. It's no longer on the app store.

I've heard good things about StreamToMe. Universal app that will do videos and music. I think AirVideo is still considered the default go-to app for video streaming, but since it doesn't do music, an iTunes hater might find StreamToMe the best option for a complete media streaming solution.

Wow, so they did. I had no idea. It's a shame AirVideo doesn't do music streaming. Despite the name, it seems so obvious. StreamToMe looks like a nice app though.

I keep zero music and videos and 2gb of photos on my 32gb iPad but I can't fit all my apps in the remaining space.

I do like keeping most of my apps on my iPad. And I do buy a lot of games (I can't resist picking up games when they drop to free or 99 cents, even if I'm only slightly interested in them. As such I've amassed well over 32gb of games/applications in the past couple of months. If you've more restraint than me, or aren't interested in iPad games, 32gb will probably be more than enough (unless you plan to go nuts with video/music on the device).

Re: Screen Protectors

A coworker and I recently traded iPads, I wanted 3G and he didn't, so we swapped and I paid him the difference. He had put one of those invisi-dealies on his, so I decided to leave it on for a few days. Who knows, maybe I was wrong in my hatred of screen protection?

After one day, i couldnt take it anymore. These things suck. They feel like garbage, like touching a restive screen made of crap. It's balled up in the trash can where it belongs, and my screen feels good again. Seriously, crappy crap crapola. Why do people ruin their iPads with this stuff?

I'm assuming your talking about Zagg invisible shields? Yeah I hate those because my finger drags on games like Angry birds. I do use a $2 antiglare version I got off eBay because I get a lot of sunlight in my room.

They can vary greatly for the iPad. The invisible shield-type that are water sealed are terrible. Also, the matte anti-glare ones make the screen much different, too.

If you do your research and find a good brand of crystal screen protector, you can barely notice that they're applied.

But why bother? It's a sheet of glass, it's far more protected than any piece of plastic.

Anti-glare looks horrid, but at least there's a reason. Anything made to look "invisible" is pointless.

Love power support anti glare on iPhone 4. Not on the iPad.

Anyone else dying for iPad 3 already. Really just want to see a retina screen. It would be glorious.

So - I've been scoping out tables for a little under a month now and I'm looking to pull the trigger on a black 32GB iPad 2. Thing is, I don't really want a smart cover (I'll probably never use it), but I do want a nice sleeve/pouch to store it in. It will mostly spend all of it's time in my backpack to and from work. I want to keep it as pristine as possible.

Someone posted a timbuk2 bag earlier in this thread: Link

I'd like some other choices to peruse. Can anyone recommend me any other good sleeves from other companies? Budget is $20-$100.

If you go with Timbuk2, ebags.com can usually save you some money, especially if you Google for coupons. I got a Timbuk2 through there.

I'd say test out a smart cover to see what you think about it. I find it very useful. Take advantage of store return policies :P (If you live near something like an Apple Store that allows returns).

It's the finest sleeve you can buy. Indestructible, and looks great if you want to carry it without your bag.

Here's a photo of mine:

Anyone have the Sirius XM app? Does it ever time out? The online player times out after 90 min. Does the Ipad app do the same?

It's too bad it took a turn for the worst after Area 5 left... not an ounce of charm or character left in that app.

the hell? they left already? they were only in the first issue, lol.

Check out Tuff-Luv. I think the hemp cases look awesome -- they're fully protective (whilst still allowing access to both cameras), they can be used as a stand in both portrait and landscape orientations, they have magnets which mimic the smart cover's functions, and they're 100% animal-free (which makes the vegetarian in me feel warm and fuzzy). They range from $60 to $80 depending on colour. The darker Marrakesh design is also pretty nice looking, and sits in the middle at $70.

I'm also planning on getting a 32GB in black sometime next month, and I'll definitely be picking up one of these to go with it. :-)

Can the Area5 guys commit to anything? They seems to give of the impression they quit everything they try after a few episodes/shows/issues/whatever

Yeah they did two issues and parted ways because of differences with Atomix. Probably because the Area 5 stuff was the on,h thing I'd actually pay for and they knew it.

Attention iPad2 owners with a smart cover. Make sure to take off your cover and check to see if any metal debris has stuck to the long magnetic rail that attaches to the iPad. A tiny metal filing got in between the rail and my iPad and slowly scratched through the entire outside finish. Bummer :(

Same argument holds true for the Smart Cover.

I find the only screen protector worth using is Power Support Crystal, most people don't even notice that it's there. There certainly is a reason to use one, it makes me breathe a lot easier when I toss the iPad to a guest or to one of my kids knowing it won't get scratched up.

I think they may rejigger iPad releases, too. Maybe not this year, but maybe it'll release during WWDC next year. If you look at sales charts, the iPhones used to always sell the lowest in the 3 months before June/July. If the iPad follows that trend and keeps releasing in the Spring, that means people buy the fewest in the holiday quarter, which is when Apple would want the most sales.

They used to always announce iPods in the Fall in part because tons of people would be buying them as Christmas gifts, but people aren't buying as much iPods now.

I don't think they'll ever do a joint iPhone + iPad release though.
I think the main problem with moving the iPad releases later is that it takes a while to build up capacity for them, and a fancy super high res screen won't help that. By launching earlier in the year they (hopefully) have enough capacity around the world by the time holiday season rolls around.

Amazon reviews say the smart covers fall off all the time - true/false?
False, but there's a way it can attach "wrong" where the connection is weak, like the magnetic strip can be flipped around or attracted to the face.

I tend to have wifi if I'm using the iPad away from home, but the times that I don't it can be annoying depending on what you plan to do with it. Like if you browse a lot or do other internet stuff like read RSS feeds or need to get files from a server, it can be pretty limiting. But there's a lot of stuff that doesn't need a connection too, so it just depends on what you're doing.

I think AV is considered the default cause it was one of the first ones and everyone knows about it (kind of like how Penultimate stays pretty high on the charts). StreamToMe works fine though, hell it can do pictures and on a Mac it can even read your iTunes and iPhoto libraries.

There's a few others like VideoStream which have a fancier interface and some other features. I'm not sure if any have the ZumoCast method of connection though, where the service connects your client and server, thus avoiding possible firewall/networking issues.

The Smart Cover does more than cover the screen though, I'd say its main use is as a conveniently portable stand.

No, sir, it does not. The smart cover is not between my finger and the screen while in use. And as was said, the smart cover offers functionality beyond protection.

Your layer of plastic does nothing, and has no benefit.

It's up to the magazine, but I can't imagine anyone not wanting to use these API's. Customers will demand it.

I dunno, man. I've seen what happens to the screen without a protector if it comes into contact with nails. If you have a girlfriend/wife that uses your device- look out. My friend's iPad got messed after his girlfriend played through Mirror's Edge (all of the swipping + nails- not the huge fake ones = yikes).

Whoa, had my ipad 2 for just over a month and this morning another use for the damn thing hit my out of the blue... sheet music!!!

So obvious, kicking myself for not realising sooner.

For obvious reasons sheet music books are pretty tall and never fit in reasonable distant spaced shelves. Going digital will solve that dilema.

Just checked a few apps and someone has been cool enough to code a free sheet music pdf view app that has an iPhone app to use for page turning.

I've ordered a felt sleeve from www.nedrelow.com. There are similar products being offered by other companies.

I still think iPad 3 is probably too soon for the doubling of resolution. That kind of pixel density at that panel size is probably too expensive for iPad 3 but should definitely be ready for iPad 4.

I finally found a stand for my iPad.

Found it in my basement and it brought so many memories back. :lol

This will do until I have the time to make my own. My aluminum plate is ready. I'm not.
