Apple releases Safari 4 beta

Ok, feeling pretty stupid right about now. I quickly perused the thread, but for the life of me I can't find the 'Top Sites' button or the 'Cover Flow.' I also noticed the grid icon that is supposed to be between the 'history' and 'apple' buttons is not present.

I only made a few minor changes and haven't really altered anything yet, though I chose not to import my slew of unorganized bookmarks from my other browsers. I'm running this on a semi-ancient xp machine at work. Where did I go wrong, GAF?

I might have to downgrade back to 3... since coverflow is fucking up with my bookmarks folder...

I have around 5,000 bookmarks.

You can turn CoverFlow off ~from Sean's post.

Open terminal and type

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeFlowViewInBookmarksView 0/1

I bet Top Sites requires some floor of performance.

Ah, that was what I was afraid of. Guess I will have to wait until I get home tonight to try out the new bells and whistles.

Yeah, but how can you just pull in some bookmark that isn't showing up in the top sites window at all?

ah. just figured it out. its a bit convoluted though.

click "edit". type the website in the address bar.. Don't hit enter.. instead, drag and drop the link from the address bar to the Top Sites list. then Pin it.

Acid 3 Compliance

Safari is the first — and only — web browser to pass Acid 3. Acid 3 tests a browser’s ability to fully render pages using the web standards used to build dynamic, next-generation websites, including CSS, JavaScript, XML, and SVG.

There are a few things I don't like and it takes some getting used to having the tabs along the top, but I'm impressed with this so far. It's faster than 3.2 or whatever came before and I do like the little bit of screen estate that moving the tabs up there free up, though.

The new address bar is cool, but I think that Apple needs to go all the way if it wants to rip off the Awesome Bar. It seems stupid that it'll come up with all sorts of matches, but if I want to find a URL based on part of the page title I have to open up Top Sites and use that search box. The address bar is a perfectly suitable place to have that feature and even does it better than Firefox because it's more economical with space, and both the URL and page title are right there but only one is searchable. Doesn't make sense.

One review that I read said how the welcome animation is actually all done in CSS, with the exception of the animated Safari icon, which is a video file. I'm not up on the latest CSS features but it certainly looks that way, and that's really damn impressive. Maybe that's what Apple is banking on with its refusal to put Flash on the iPhone...

I would say almost definitely. they are pushing CSS animation way more than any other browser maker.

CSS Animation is basically Core Animation porn.

I do not like the idea of CSS being temporally significant (i.e. animation), but I suppose anything that gets Core Animation in the browser is cool for users.

I remember there was a big stink about how Opera was cheating on one part of it just to pass the test, when it should have really scored 99%. That happened months ago and I haven't kept up on it, though.

As with all Apple software, it is still horrendous on Windows.

I do quite like it, though. But I need a speedy browser and nothing tops FF3 yet.
What's wrong with it on Windows? Looks great to me.

I also can't figure out your final sentence, because Chrome and (now) Safari are both wildly faster than even the FF3.1 beta, both in actual application speed and JavaScript rendering.

I installed it on XP and imo it is butt ugly. Nice and fast tho, and the top sites is heaps better than chrome. It's probably the best of both opera's speed dial (choice and positioning) and chrome (automatic selection). I hate, hate, hate chromes lack of choice in positioning and selection of their top sites. I hate that to get rid of one you need to delete your history, so safari's implementation is very welcome. Not a fan of the visual display of them, but I guess its keeping in tradition with the rest of their offerings

I can't install it. When I get to choose which partion I want to install it on, it says "You can't install Safari on this partion: ERROR_SEC" (but in French).

Anyone else experiencing problems?

Make sure you're updated to 10.6 or higher?

Didn't know that this came out, I'll be checking it out once I get home.

I mostly use Camino as my browser on my mac and Safari every once it a while, but after hearing all of the positives from everyone, I'm anxious to see how it'll work out for me.

Benchmarks:

Safari 4 is 42x faster than IE7.

Keep in mind that Opera 10 and Firefox 3.1 are much faster (in the charts, Minefield is Firefox 3.2 alpha), so in the future when these browsers come out of beta, IE will be further behind the competition more than ever before, in just about every single way.

Holy Hell, IE7 is dogshit at javascript. :lol

at least IE8 isn't so far off the charts
from my brief usage of ie8 I'm very impressed. They've made massive strides in speed and compatibility. I really like web accelerators too

Liu Kang Baking A Pie said:
By the time it comes out, FF3.1 and Opera 10 will be out or coming very soon, and it's going to be the IE7 chart all over again.

you got a point.

I want to see someone put IE6 up there.

at work, we use a CMS system that's heavily reliant on javascript for lots of actions (search, move, rename files). and, of course, we all have to use IE6.

sooooo slow.

A few of us have installed firefox and Chrome to help process simple tasks but a lot of the functions seem to need IE6 to run so, man, it's torture every day.

Stolen shamelessly from Ars, here's a humorous take from a Mac developer - https://twitter.com/Cocoia/statuses/1245266324

Going to hold off for now on my PC. Safari 4 doesn't appear to be appreciably faster than FF3.1 and I'm not doing without a myriad of FF extensions on my Vista machine. Upgrading the Mac is a no-brainer though.

SafariStand's find-as-you-type feature make Safari 4 freeze. Refusing to go without that feature, and unable to find any other such plugin that works with S4, I'll have to wait patiently and stick to my nightly Webkit builds. It's a shame, I was looking forward to better GIF performance.

Unless anyone's been able to find a plugin like that?

Glims can do that and it has already been updated for the beta. :)
I'm loving new Safari's new features, just waiting for Adblock now. Best browser ever.

Don't really like the tabs up top.

Top Sites is AWEsome, but there's a little annoying lag where the window remains grayed out before it loads the page.

I like it, tabs on the top is a nice and different layout as long as the title bar is small, which it is by default here. Its pretty fast, but sometimes there is some "lag" which I hope gets patched in final. It handles my xp theme (like I'm running that ugly piece of shit green start button) perfectly.

Good work Apple.

Awwww, this has me back to Safari as my go-to browser on my iMac over Firefox 3. It feels smoother, though perhaps it isn't.

Not sure I'm feeling the tabs at the top though. I know the window has to be "level" at the top, but from a usability standpoint it would really help if the active tab's tab stuck up above the others just a little bit. I'm also constantly clicking the Safari window + button instead of the tab-close button on the left-most tab.

one nice thing I just noticed about the new tabs. if you want to drag a tab off to make a new window you no longer have to first drag it down, then off to the side. just start dragging to the side and once you get past the edge of the window, you'll see the thumbnail of the new window about to be formed.

good improvement.

Ah hell, the ridiculous spawning new window for links is still in. What the fuck? It has no place in a tabbed browser.

Animated gifs still play slower than firefox ??

Yes very much so. My avy seems to give it trouble.

Really like this update, of course there's some things that are f'd up but that's a beta.

Although I don't really like the refresh within the address bar, I like a separate button. But they're doing this same thing on the safari iPhone so I guess I'll just have to live with it.

Getting ERROR_SEC so I guess I have a bit of updating to do. A lot actually, it's been a while, haha.

And why would tabs on top change anything? Mind, I haven't seen the point of tabs since I started using Exposé.

This runs a lot smoother than fucking FF3. My only complains are a missing few odd features that are long overdue, and how ugly the tab bar is now—I like it up top, it's just really half-assed.

Saves 25-30 pixels of vertical screen space. It's a more natural paradigm for end users, as it represents physical tabs.

hmmm..... ok so i uninstalled glims and installed safari 4 and now when im in msn, everytime i press enter it deselects the chat window so i have to reclick in the chat window to type again. so irritating. its prob unrelated to my safari stuff but damnnnnnnn.

Yeah, I was also previously relying on Glims for this. :/

glims has been updated, btw.

I reinstalled it mainly to bring back "find as you type" and "undo close tab".

yes.

Yeah it's annoying, but you can grab that rough corner of the window and slot it back into your other window (on OS X anyway) which is fucking awesome.

yes.

Can find as you type be disabled in glims? It's annoying as hell in Reader and other apps that map to specific letter events.
