Apple September Event 2017 |OT| A Top-Notch Keynote

What stopped the same person from putting the phone on your finger while you're sleeping?

That's without considering the issue of it working in the dark which isn't guaranteed...personally, no one is turning on lights to use faceID without waking me up.

Obviously nothing, but the main difference is TouchID at least required they touch you, so there was a higher chance you'd wake up.

I'm just wondering how it'll work in real life lol the bit about how it works in dark places is a good point too.

I'm nervous about buying a super expensive product that cracks so easily. Think I might just get the 8.

why would it crack so easily? I had my 6 plus for 3 years without cracks. Be more careful with your phone.

This is a silly worry.

Facial recognition gon get niggas caught up more than TouchID did. Can't someone just unlock your phone while you're sleeping?

I honestly think Apple will have some safeguards in place against this. It’ll probably sense eye movement or just making sure they are actually open.

If Apples going to take out Touch ID and replace it with this I’m sure it’ll be awesome and in a year or two we’ll wonder how we even lived without it.

I'm working in clubs. Pretty dark. Curious how it's gonna work. Don't want a flashscreen to light my face

I believe it's rumored to shine (non-visible) infrared light at your face and scan that, so it should still work in the dark. This is also how the eye tracking on the New 3DS works.

Just a reminder that for all the hype surrounding the X, the 8/8+ are going to necessarily be Apple’s best-selling devices this year due to supply constraints. If you really are worried about FaceID, you can get a top-of-the-line TouchID phone like most people inevitably will.

Was in a similar position to you last year. Owned an iPhone 6S Plus, wanted to join the IUP with an iPhone 7 and give them my 6S Plus.

Basically what they did was pay me for my old phone into my bank account. You can't use the phone as credit for your IUP because Apple use a third party credit company for all that.

Also, you have to reserve an appointment at an Apple Store and go in to set up your IUP and pick up your X there. You can't do it online/on phone. You will also need to bring ID with you.

To sum up: Go to Apple Store with your old phone, tell them you want X on IUP. They pay you for your old phone, set up your IUP and leave with your X the same day.

Thank you! I had no idea that they can just pay me money into my bank account. If that is the case then I wouldn't have a problem (and would actually prefer) paying the X without the IUP this time, then once I receive it I can just go to a nearby Apple Store, gave them my 7 for inspection and they just give me money for it?

I'd much rather do that. I don't know why I assumed they only give store credit. Thank you!

Likely a situation where you will just have to type your pass code to get in.

oh the horror
Infrared guys. Same way Kinect didn’t need lights on and New 3DS can track your face in the dark.

So excited! I mean, I never buy anything, but at least seeing how technology is evolving always hypes me up.

I'm really hesitating for the first time

After a year on my 7+

-power don't matter much it's already too powerull for what I do. I play just mind games on my phone no 3D games at all
-photos are already perfect for me. Just for social media use ... don't need better camera

I'm interested in a bezel less iphone as I think the + is a bit big but it's still ok

First time I'm not that excited

if you're used to the screen size of the plus, the X might not be ideal. Yes no bezels and smaller physical phone, but the screen will still be smaller. Looks mostly the same width as the standard iphone screen, but taller.

I'd be curious to see what difference there is expected to be if you're watching 16:9 content, and if you're watching 2.35:1 movies (might be really nice)

This is a silly worry.

Beg to differ. I had a crazy ex who used my finger when I was asleep to access my phone and it was creepy as FUCK. This was actually one of my first thoughts when I heard about facial recognition being used. Privacy is a legitimate concern imo.

If Apple have designed FaceID to maintain that high bar of quality in security even with low light conditions using infrared, I will be amazed. Fingers crossed that is what they have managed.

With iOS11, triple tap the power button to disable Touch ID before bedtime to prevent crazy ex snoopage.

Nice, quite happy about this. I mean the chances of this ever happening to me again are slim, but waking up suddenly to someone else using your phone and knowing how they had to unlock it is definitely an ugly feeling lol.

Yep, Apple offer a trade in service (atleast they do in the UK!) and will happily pay you for your unwanted iPhones.

Only thing is, you likely wont get as much as if you had sold it privately, but that didn't bother me, its much easier and hassle-free. The money takes no more than 48 hours to show up in your bank account. I believe they gave me £320 for my 12 month old iPhone 6S Plus which was about what I expected.

it's 5 clicks, but yes. once you do this it is impossible to unlock the phone without a passcode. It basically sets the passcode like you just powered on the phone.

I mean.... the touchid "camera" is IR.. no way apple implements something that requires a passcode in poor/no lighting.

A glass back makes me think the phone will be so fragile, more then normal.

I'll be honest i'm interested in what this iPhone X will be, I don't think it will be another big phone changer like the original iPhone was but removing the home button seems like something a lot of androids are doing so they need to think of more then just that.

I feel like this push on the $1k smartphone range is terrible. Most phones if I'm remembering correctly were in the $200 teardown range, being sold for $650, unless the teardown on these is significantly higher, this feels like such a rip-off.

If they're going to announce Animal Crossing and if the wait for the Android version will be too long I might have to buy an iPad. 🤔

What's the best iPad on a budget these days? Want to watch YouTube, play AC and read some PDF files with it. Not interested in the mini or spending 500 Euros.

I've completely lost track on iPads when I sold my mini years ago.

Oh 100% agree. I'll take the lower amount of money but hassle-free experience any day. I read too many horror stories of trying to sell privately.

Thank you again!

maybe. my guess is it will be offset by a cheap repair price. break on the front or back still stays at $30 each with AppleCare+ is my guess.

Any chance they say iOS11 is available today?

for dev/public beta users, high degree of certainty. for non-beta users, likely next week or maybe like Friday on the outside chance.

https://www.apple.com/de/ipad-9.7/ can be gotten for 360ish on a regular basis

Also: 2 hour hypeeeeeeee

Can we see this from our iPads in some way?

Also, I guess if iOS11 doesn't release today, we won't see any of the cool ARKit apps until next week or so when it releases? Looking forward to those.

Sadly until the market says no Apple are going to keep creeping up the price, it's very much the thought of improved phone = cost more when each year tech prices drop as new ones replace it.

Yeap :/ and it's not like these companies haven't already had gargantuan returns on r&d. I watch these events with excitement for the future, but it sucks knowing I won't be owning any of the devices lol.

In for an X as my upgrade is due this month, as for the watch ive already got nike apple watch so unless the new one has a browser ill survive

There is a difference between placing your finger on an IR sensor and having your face hovering in front of it at a distance. But I agree with your statement, Apple have higher standards & expectations. It would still be impressive nonetheless.

Do I try and leave work early and get home missing a few minutes of the start; head home normally and try to stream it on the train on my laptop using my phone as a hotspot (very varied signal along the way); or wait until I get home (about an hour after the start) with good wifi and hope I can rewind the livestream?

Second option. The most important stuff is the information, quality of the steam dun matter.

Or just follow live blogs.

My Microsoft Surface Book unlocks (windows login session) with IR at night without any light except from the screen, works flawlessly; no reason Apple can't do it.

Id follow a live blog till you get home. Get all the juicy bits that way without wasting time buffering.

Oh really? Thats great to hear then. Wasn't aware we were already at the point that the tech works flawlessly. Thanks.

anything over basic iphones have been in the $850 range unlocked for awhile. $1K wouldn't be that different. If you can use it for 3-4 years just fine, that's not too terrible.

Thinking about paying for the iPhone straight up this time and not go into a contract like situation. Does apple usually give priority to carriers or will we be able to purchase unlocked day one?
