Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing

What, did that happen?

What a waste of time for everyone, holy crap.

I guess it can depend on which field of work the job is.

No it didn't happen but I got a call and was asked to come tomorrow for a meeting so in theory it could still happen but I just find it so strange.

I mean the absolute worst case scenario I could picture is that you don't get the job, but they found you so interesting that they thought about something else you could do at the company and would like to keep you onboard for future opportunities as well.

Which is the less positive news you could get. If it's anything negative, that'll definitively be a first.

It's possible they went with someone else at first, but that person turned them down and you're the second choice. I'd say it's most likely you're getting called in to finalize everything. If they didn't want you around they'd either send you an email (if they were nice) or not call you at all.

In my case, I went in for 3 because the company owner forgot who I was but the guy I was to be working under was pushing for me pretty hard. The last interview was just salary negotiations and then 'ok, you're starting tomorrow'

It's most likely positive news but I find kinda strange not to say it on the phone.

Learned my old position that I got booted out of due to a mat-leave-backfill returning, and which has since been vacated once again for the same person to backfill a different mat leave….has been filled with someone new and random, instead of me getting the call back.

Feels bad man.

I still have a great prospect in a round 2 interview tomorrow, and some other exciting applications out there. So I'm pretty jazzed. Wish me well!

Something similar happened to me. I'd been working at this place (college IT department) on a contract basis for 2 years on and off, and got called in for an interview like I had the last 3 times. It was just a formality and required in their hiring process, or so I thought. Was so confident I even bought a car to get ready.

Have no idea what went wrong but I never got the call. Couldn't sleep for days afterwards waiting for it, and it was months before I stopped beating myself up over not getting the position.

The weird thing is the guy I'd worked with during all those contracts didn't even get a call that time, so they at least thought I was more worthwhile than him. But if they weren't 100% certain why would they even waste everyone's time calling me in? I'd known all 5 of the people in the interview for years, some even before I'd been working there. Just confused the hell out of me.

welp.

Was passed on a job within 20min after a 2nd round phone interview.

"The feedback was that they were looking for someone a bit more engaging."

gah.

I'm just not great on the phone :(

I think the only thing it's good for is identifying who to contact about applying for a job. Looking at it a different way you can be sure that anyone who is considering hiring you will check out your linkedin profile so it should be as robust as possible.

Not exactly, but at my internship I got connected with some very important people on LinkedIn. Ever since then, I've had recruiters ask to connect with me and my profile views shot up with more important people looking at my profile every so often.

Do companies ever ask people to come back to a meeting after 2-3 interviews to tell them that they won't get the job?

Isn't that just a waste of time for everbody when an email or a phonecall would do?

Yes they do. Its very heartbreaking. Happened to me once.

I was just called in for a second round interview next week, I had the first interview a month ago... I had honestly given up on the job. I'm pretty nervous about it not because I'm unqualified but because it's exactly what I want to do with my career. Honestly I think my chances are okay as long as I don't horribly botch this interview.

Well, after having an internal interview 2.5 months ago within my company, I finally got the offer I've been waiting for! Man, the corporate world can be so slow.

If you receive a rejection letter it, was it due to not passing the computer assessment or did a recruiter look over it?

Also...

Is it a good idea to list briefly, how you used certain programs and languages?

Headed into round 2. It's 3 on 1 (me), including the CEO and a VP. Really exciting and elevated position (compared to my previous roles), though definitely in a new area that I'm unsure I'm qualified for. Who knows. Here goes.

I don't think there's any way to really know with larger companies.

I had my second interview for a state job last Wednesday or Thursday. I called on Friday to simply express my thanks and excitement. Then yesterday I called back and left a message inquiring about the job, and again expressing my gratitude. They promised to call me back either way once they know something, and that I should hear back by the end of this week. Should I just play the complete and total waiting game now and not call them back or anything anymore? I certainly don't want to press them.

Congrats!

Thanks! Good luck! I don't know if it helps or not, but every time I close off interviews/thank you emails, I work in the statement "I am worth you and your company's investment".

Government is slooooowwwwww. You've already called one too many times. I know its not easy, but just relax and hold off from calling them again.

At this point, I would play the waiting game and not contact them.

Thanks guys. This is the first shot at a "real" job I have had since I was laid off in April (as a result of the business, well, going out of business). I'll update once I hear something back.

I recently applied for a job back in the 2nd week of August. Two weeks later I get a email to schedule an interview, this takes about another week to actually schedule the interview and both the company and I agree to a time since I work full-time and can't just take off to go to an interview whenever I want, it has to be after I get off work. At the time of my interview, it was a month from the time of application to the time of interview. Now a week later, I get an email for second interview which will take place the following week...now we're around 1.5 months.

After the second interview, which takes place next week for me, I'm not sure how quickly an offer letter will happen (if it does), but it just shows how long the actual hiring process is outside of the actual applying process. It's a grueling process, definitely can be soul-crushing if you go through all of that and then get rejected.

Yeah with this second round interview I have next week it's already been 6 weeks since I initially applied for the position. If I were to get the job who knows how long it'll be until I get an offer.

I'm probably going to have to start looking at the end of the year. My company is merging a few different locations and even though ive been there for years and theyve said nobody is getting let go,im preparing for the worst. Haven't had to look for a job in 7 years and I know it's gonna suck.

What's even worse is that I'm in the middle of buying a house. I've budgeted my mortgage assuming a pay cut but I need to be wary of what I spend (furniture, etc.) because I have also saved 3 months salary for when I start the job search.

It really is annoying that companies do this. I'm fortunate enough to be holding a job going throw my 2.5 month process, but for people with no current work and bills to pay, it has to be the most stressful thing to go through.

I'm not sure why companies take this long to hire a person, but application submission, reviewing of apps, contacting people to schedule interviews, interviews, narrowing down for second interviews, scheduling second interviews, narrowing down to who to give an offer to, waiting for offer acceptance, etc., etc.

Long process. Going through all of that and then getting reject is pretty stressful.

It varies by companies(obviously).

I got hired once the same day I did an interview.

For another job, it was 2 phone screens. Then an in person interview individually with 5 different people, in sequence going up the chain to the president of the office. They all apparently loved me... but not enough to hire me. They waited 2 months then sent me an offer letter.

By that time I already accepted at the job I'm at still. I got this one from a simple phone interview, they offered me a month contract, 3 days into the contract the IT manager was offering me a full time job.

So I mentioned earlier that i have a second round interview next week and I have a question about it.

They scheduled this interview as a phone interview which kind of threw me for a loop, my first interview was a phone interview with HR. This time I'm interviewing with the Director of Marketing, who is also the hiring manager for this position, and I'm confused about why they didn't want to do this in person especially since I'll be talking to the hiring manager. I live in the same city and they know that. It's a mid-level manufacturing company, around $200 million in profit a year, and I just figured maybe the Director is too busy to do anything face to face since it seems like they're hiring for a ton of positions at the moment.

Is this normal? Should I just assume that if this goes well there will be a third round?

I would be grateful if I ever had to do a job interview over the phone.

Easy access to type in on my PC any bullshit questions they could ask or curve balls they might have.
Plus you can be in your underwear the whole time, the way God intended.

"Sir, what are you doing, I can hear you furiously typing in the background"

Not sure it'd go as well as the classic sip-on-your-drink trick. Though even that, I had someone comment on it last week. Was in an interview, and I don't think the lady there liked me very much (the man seemed much more welcoming at any rate), and at one point the man throws kind of a big question, so I pause and take a sip while I'm at it, and the lady looked at me and said "Yeah, you sip on that drink."

I was like woah, calm down lady. Then again, maybe it was her kind of humor, cause I'm not that offputting and it was for a NPO, but idk. I'll remember that one at any rate.

That is definitely different from my experiences in the interviewing world, but maybe its how the hiring manager wants to do it: go through a phone interview and then bring you in for a follow up if they are impressed.

Congratulations!

All this talk about the possibility of being told no face-to-face for nothing.

Thanks!

Hah yeah I think it was just me being really negative after so many cases where I was hired for jobs on films/tv shows/music videos that didn't pan out and being almost hired for other jobs

Had anyone ever had any luck getting a job that's in a different state? Odd question but I was curious.

Applied for a position at a television station in Austin, but I'm from Illinois. I fit all the qualifications and whatnot but haven't been able to find any work in my field since graduating. Granted it says lack of experience isn't a problem as training will be provided but I don't know how serious to take that.

inception.

Pretty much...just graduated in May.

However, the frustrating part is how they ask you what you're looking for. "Tell me a little about yourself, and about your past job experience." Yata yata yata.

They don't mention what the job is until 10 min into the interview, and they never say the term, "job recruiter."

I have friends that found jobs out of state after college. Just make sure to let them know that you will not need relocation assistance as that might scare them off. Also, I remember seeing some jobs very recently for news stations in San Antonio if you're interested. They were for production assistants I think.

I was looking at some random jobs for engineers because I got bored looking at only stuff for myself, and found an entry level part time position that requires 3 years of experience.

I think that's one thing that makes me upset the most is that entry level has to have experience...like how are inexperienced people going to receive experience without...the entry level position that you require experience for.

Waiting by the phone all day for a call sucks 😕

At least there were some interesting listings posted and I caught up with GBBO Extra Slice.
