Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing

Applied for an internship at what would be a dream job. They emailed me back this morning with a rejection. Didn't make even it to a phone interview, for an internship.

Feels bad man.

Fuck man, I'm sorry.

I'm working a job that I really wanna dump. But that and school drain me do much that I can't really go searching for another on a consistent basis.

It's like running in place.

Should I reapply for a place where I didn't get any answer the first time around I applied? Depressing seeing the job posting reposted and you didn't get anything the first time around...
Absolutely. Things change on all fronts.
It probably minimises your work too, just try to tweak your old documents.

I received a rejection letter within an hour of applying for a job. I don't believe it was an automated response, at least I'm hoping it wasn't because it was a "positive rejection" letter about my resume. What do you think?

Dear CreepingFear,

Thank you for applying to our posting for an Redacted. Unfortunately, the experience level required for this position is higher than what you currently possess. That being said, I would not normally take the time to write this email but I have to say that your resume and cover letter caught my eye. I just wanted to let you know that the format of your material is quite nice and your wording goes a long way to express a go-getter attitude that many employers are going to look for.

I wish you the best in your job search and in the start of what I hope is a promising career in IT for you. I started in the computer industry over 15 years ago and wouldn't trade it for the world. Please don't hesitate to apply again down the road if we have any junior level support positions become available.

All the best,
Redacted Redacted
Managing Partner

Edit: I forgot to mention another positive thing that happened to me today. The other day I posted here that I asked my current manager if the company I am working for had any open IT positions. She said she would email the IT department of the company. I sent her my resume and she did. Today, she said that the IT department was excited or positive, can't remember which wording she used. She first asked me if I had heard anything from them yet. I haven't of course, but it was better than getting an immediate rejection saying that they had no positions or that I wasn't qualified.

That both sounds awesome.
Good luck with the IT position at your company. It is usually much easier to get a new position within an organisation than somewhere else. :)

Yeah, I've been told my company likes to promote/hire within and my manager was basically a reference close to the company to help things out. I'm trying to stay even keeled since I haven't even had an interview yet.

So I was able to reschedule one of the interviews to another day, thankfully. Then it got pushed back a few days due to a closing of the office (weather was bad).

Then I got an offer letter in my email, peaking out at me like a bright, shining sun. I start Monday. It finally happened!

My suggestion to all is to buff up your resume. Make it look beautiful and dedicated towards the jobs you want.

If you can, freelance. That helped me obtain this job. I did stuff in the interim, and they loved that drive (plus it dilutes the whole not having a standard job thing).

And just be positive. Every time I got negative, I simply shut down and didn't do much of anything, including applying. I made mistakes, some which came at the expense of other opportunities. It's difficult to put that in practice, but the results will show eventually.

Good luck to you all. Thanks for listening to all my rants over the past few months. It's been a tough road, and I hope it gets better for everyone here.

Have a phone interview setup for next Monday. So I'm crossing my fingers. It's not a job that I really want but it's something and it's not incredibly demeaning.

Congratulations! I can relate to the being negative and shutting down. I was kind of like that last week and during Christmas week. I think I'm better now.

Good luck! Hope to hear good news, but let us know if it doesn't work out since this thread is kind of a support group for that kind of stuff.

Was a temp employee from August until the end of the year and was let go on 1/1/15. Was nice that my boss gave me like 3 weeks notice but man does applying suck. I'm now getting a bunch of text spam now too :/

Good news tho is that I heard yesterday from the agency I contracted through and they told me my old boss wants me to come back and interview for a permanent position Tuesday and will have the job description for me soon. I'm guessing my chances are good since they requested me back

Question: has anyone here used Express Employment? There's two offices in my area and I've had a horrible experience with both of them. Easily the worst hiring agency I've ever been with.

How good or useful are these "talent agencies" that you get automatically enrolled in when applying for jobs on careerbuilder, monster, etc.? Does anything ever come out of that?

Do companies not know what "entry level" means? I'm so tired of seeing entry opportunities followed by 5 years exp. Argh.

Does anyone have advice for someone looking to get into HR?

I have a Bachelors in Communication Studies - Interpersonal/Organizational, a certificate in the essentials of HR management, but no experience.

I did some research. The experience thing is usually a preference. Apply anyways. It's the same thing for every entry level IT job I apply for. I guess it has to do with companies not wanting to pay for training, so this is their way of trying to avoid that if they can.

I got an email from one of the jobs I applied for. They said they were impressed by my back round. They then sent over an assessment test. Fuck, I didn't do so well. Networking is my weakness and there was some shit in there that I didn't do so well on. They also had me take a typing test. I did 60 WPM with only one error for three minutes. I'll let you know if anything develops, but after the test score, I suppose I've been eliminated. I really wanted this job. I would get $16-18 an hour compared to the $9.50 I make now.

That feeling of waiting for an answer after an interview. It is killing me...
I am very optimistic that it went well. Much better than the one I had last month where I was super nervous. This time, I think I sold myself well as I had no problems answering the questions.

I guess I am one of the minority who can't wait for Monday to come. Would be very disappointed if it doesn't work out.

Had no problem getting jobs before, now randomly no success for almost a year. Even lost my last job without any type of official notice I was going to be laid off(retail store did eventually close down though). Laid off from the job before that with only a month of employment from a family run restaurant because business was "too slow".

Sad thing I really don't want any of these jobs, just have to fulfill my probation fees which are piling up by the month.

Went from a somewhat respectful black male to your stereotypical "lazy" boy who doesn't want to work. Like seriously, who the hell on this Earth wants to be broke?

Just went in for my shortest interview yet for a minimum wage job, but it's something I've done in the past and it's alright for what it is.

On the questionnaire the guy was filing in, there were little check marks for the boxes U - E - N - C. I'm sure it's randomized but, all I could read in the fine print was U is Unacceptable. What do the other boxes stand for?

This morning I saw a posting for a job that I can truly say would be my dream job. Let's just say that they make video games. I'm working especially hard on this cover letter and resume. I'm an atheist, but pray for me please!

May Shiva grant you succes.

Update:

Didn´t get that job, and didn´t find something else thus far.

But the guy from that offer, called me a yesterday, that they want me for another job. Basically they´re hired to install all the IT for a customer for a new building, it´s only for 5-6 months, but the pay is good and better than to sit at home and live off unemployment.

Since we already met, I´m basically just going there tomorrow to sign the paperwork.

Also will start looking for something else ~2 months before the contract is up.

Yay, no jobcenter.

Got it. Starting wednesday.

Though i decided to start looking for something else already:)

It´s great that i have found something and quite happy about it, but i only get 25-30 hours, which is enough for me and to save a bit, since i don´t pay a lot of rent, but i want to move into a new apartment rather soonish and max. 30 hours aren´t going to cut it fast enough. So as soon as i find something else, i´m a goner.

But i have the privilege that i can look for work that i really want, and not just the next best thing.

And good luck to everyone else.

Congratulations! You should always look for something better. Most companies have no loyalty, why should you?

I'm trying to get into HR as well, I would suggest looking for HR Assistant jobs, essentially secretarial work inside an HR department but you can get your foot in the door, get experience working inside and HR dept and hopefully in the future be able to apply for HR coordinator, administrator and generalist jobs as well.

It's a tough gig these days. It really comes down to networking, even with experience. More so than other careers. Moms been in HR for over 20 years, and she normally says you have to just go hard in the paint and stalk people these days. Hit up Linkedin and contact people in positions or companies you're interested in, for opportunities or advice. Look into getting into internships. Hit up local job fairs, ones at colleges would be more ideal if you can get in since they look for people with little to no experience. Temp agencies as well if you haven't looked into it. It sucks, but it's not as "specific" as other fields so the pool is a lot bigger. What razgriz417 said also is good advice.

You just have to keep at it

What position is it? Usually game companies ask for a demo reel or give you a small project to hand in with your application. Make sure you don't miss it.

It's not like that, although they did request that I put why I wanted to work for them and what games I am currently playing in my cover letter.

Had an interview last week, lots of technical/non-technical questions.

It went pretty well and I got a call to attend a second interview with the hiring manager.

What can I expect?

I was interested in getting into HR out of college and never made it. After working in several offices I have to say that companies put almost no thought into who they hire for these entry level jobs so its very difficult to stand out. At two different places the HR person was originally the office manager who they 'promoted' into that role after doing that for a few years. So if you're willing do manage an office for a while that may be a start. It would also help to be a reasonably attractive young woman if you can manage that.

I've had a steady stay-at-home job for three years. It ended. I'm glad to be out as my boss just had no clue, but it's been hard trying to get work again. Especially an office job.

I can no longer set my own hours? What?

At least you got a 3 week notice. I worked at a video game company as a temp before this and they just deactivated your badge and that's how you knew you were done. I thought that's the worst way to handle it and no where else could be like that. New job for the temps is exactly like that. My badge has been working a good two weeks after the majority has been cut but it is still soul crushing the moment before my badge hits the door. It's about time I start looking for something more serious even if I have to take the pay cut.

I just sent two applications away and realised afterwards that I wrote 2014 instead of 2015 in the date.

Should I write them an email and tell them that I accidently wrote the wrong date or should I just leave it be?

The damage is done, I personally don't think resending will do much good. If your lucky no one will notice. ;)

This is me coming out of college. Gotta wake up at 6 M-F and sit at the computer til 4:30 rolls around

dat job security tho

Man, not finding a job is making it feel like all that work for the degree is worthless.

It hurts when you get a bunch of really positive interviews with really good feedback, then end up with HR saying "Wait for the technical interview that could be in a week, two weeks or a month even."

Thanks for the advice :)

I hope the don't. The year just started, so I hope they show some understanding if they see the error.

If you resend it, you will point it out to them especially if they haven't noticed.
I don't think that they will like having extra emails for a very small thing.

Not worth cancelling your search over but great that you've still got a potential success lined up down the road. In the past I've had lengthy tests/interviews with companies and not even received a response. In those situations you'd rather straight up be told than have a lingering uncertainty. It also grinds me gears how you can put in a lot of time for an application and then not even receive a customary (lazy) generic copy/paste response.

Been following this thread for a long time and just thought I'd chime in with my own situation. Following my degree I was hired at a company (creative field) and moved far way from friends and family to go after the supposed 'dream job'. Well two years later I was made redundant and had to take a minimum wage retail job to pay the bills. It's hard, honest work but after putting in so much effort with education only to be back doing the same thing you were in high school is soul crushing. Eighteen months later and I finally got out of there, only now I'm working in a clerical environment and still only part time/temp.

It often beats me down to think I'm earning less now than I was several years ago in my mid-twenties and with less job satisfaction. More so as I have had interviews at some (most?) of my favourite production companies in my prior field and failed due to nerves or more experienced applicants.

I guess my question to Job-GAF would be - When do you give in on your dream job? Should you? Should I just set my sights on being the world's best paper-pusher and disregard job satisfaction due to my apparent limitations like a majority of the population? I'd could probably make a career earning more money this way but it makes me miserable. However I feel I'm becoming too old for junior/entry level jobs and am finding younger applicants with more experience than myself. Any personal insight or stories would be greatly appreciated!

I got a question about an email opportunity. They added extra stuff to what the original job position mentioned. It was a front end web developer job and the person even mentions it earlier. It was html, css and javascript. Then i noticed a list of things i must have and noticed there was more like backend php, etc. Do you guys know if i still have a chance? I will contact the person of course but wanted to know what you guys think? Also they noted to email them an updated resume. I usually notice this with recruiters and was wondering why they asked that? It was a recent submission so are they trying to say to add the extra stuff they asked for in the list?

Had a series of interviews/assessment tests with a company today. It was my first interview in 8 years and I think I was noticeably nervous. Overall it went ok, but there was a tone/facial expression shift with the HR girl when she was telling me I was done for the day and that they'd get back to me and the past couple hours of interviewing with her that makes me think I'm not getting the job. I should know either way in 2-3 days but I'm not hopeful.

Did not get the job. Did not think the rejection letter would come as such a shock.

Cut my foot up on dress shoes, too, worn just for the interview.

FML.

Welp just got confirmed that the job I really want (teaching abroad) is going to try and confirm an interview date with me sometime this week!

@.@

Going to freak out for a few days then ask for some interview tips lol.

This is going to sound incredibly dumb, but how do I go about writing a resignation letter/two weeks notice?

I've never had to write one, so I don't know how I should go about this. I'm leaving a retail position. I was going to have a talk with my managers to drop this bomb, but I figured a letter might be a good thing to have handy for official purposes.

Always leave a paper trail for this kind of thing. A friend of mine was told he could just leave and that his status would be listed as resigned. When he later tried to reapply he was told that his file had recorded a termination instead and that he was not hireable at the company anymore.

When I resigned my retail position I just politely informed them (by email) of the reason I was leaving and to contact me if they had any questions or concerns. I later had the exit interview and that was that.

Applied for a promotion to a different department within my company and my work colleague applied as well. When I told my supervisor that I applied, she accused me of only applying because the other guy did. When I tried to explain why that position interests me, she walked away while I was mid sentence...

Flash forward to last week, the HR coordinator called my colleague to arrange their interview time and they had a nice chat it sounded like. Instead of calling me, she emails me instead to set up my interview.

When the interview started the next day, the manager and HR lady were both cold and unfriendly to me. Jumped right into the questions, and didn't make me feel at ease at all. No "how is your day going", "tell us a bit more about yourself that we don't know about", nothing.

They told me I would find out either Friday or Monday and I heard nothing so far. Really feels like I was set up to fail and that I didn't get it. Feels bad man.

This is more-or-less what I have. I padded it up to briefly talk about my experience and something of an inside joke within the store at the end.

On top of the paper trail, I didn't want to disrespect a place I actually liked working at (for the most part).

Should I mention that I have a job lined up, or is that something I should leave off?

I've done this once, but the job wasn't so critical on my resume. I wouldn't ever do it again, though.

It's none of their business and honestly, I doubt they care as to why you're leaving. Just make sure no bridges are burnt if you're gonna put this job on your resume and list references.

Let me ask you guys a question. Not sure if it's the right thread so delete or let me know if it's not.

So I work in retail (it's not walmart or fastfood, fwiw) for some money before I start school, which I hopefully begin next year. Been at my job for 8 months. Never been written up, never late, managers always give me compliments ect.

The problem is that I'm still at minimum wage. That's just not enough for an hourly wage. So here's my question:

Since I work in retail, is there any chance I could get a raise by asking? Any people in retail, or who have worked in retail, ever done this? I'm not even sure if it's worth asking since it IS retail.
