Are comedies dead?

It is pretty dead, but I don't really care. Even since I discover Norm Macdonald, all other media seems so unfunny. Like it was written by aliens who can't begin to comprehend humor. It killed completely the genre for me. So I just rewatch his stuff in loop.

Said it here first, Norm is the Dark Souls of comedy.

An industry pushing this is incapable of understanding humor.

There was some piece published a few days ago calling for Elf to be cancelled because it was making fun of adults with disabilities. The new world order does not value comedy.

As in movies? I did like the Death of Stalin, and I have to admit I enjoy the dumb humor of Deadpool, but other than that I haven't really seen anything good in years.
On TV South Park has a decent episode from time to time (I liked the 2 post covid specials) and What we do in the Shows is ok though it hardly gets more than a light chuckle form me.

Must be hell trying to make a comedy with the curent state of things though:

Comedy is very subjective so it's always hard to tell if you are just not getting a new brand of humor. Almost every comedian out there - someone finds their shit hilarious. I do think that the current climate is stifling comedy - there are so many things that are basically off limits for anything that wants to be mainstream.

It's a rough combo of the overseas markets being as important or more important than the domestic market, and just the obvious general state of PC fuckery that has dominated since twitter was born.

Will we see another massive Wedding Crashers or Hangover type box office success? I don't think that will be common anymore. Good comedy still exists on TV, but I shudder to think what will happen when Larry David or the Always Sunny crew hangs it up.

Sadly most of the holdover stuff from the better comedy eras is running on fumes or has caved in.

I rewatched Sixteen Candles last night and this most quintessential and harmless of comedies was FILLED WITH RACISM, SEXUAL ASSAULT, MOCKING THE DISABLED, WHITE PRIVILEDGE, and DRUG ABUSE! AND BREASTESES, NAKED BREASTESES!!!

I was shocked, nay, TERRIFIED, that this nearly 40 year teen comedy was the funniest thing that I've seen in a decade.

I actually watched it for the first time 2 weeks ago and found it to be a bit cringey but it was pure 80s teen comedy.

Used to like Bill Burr but eventually got tired of him, rants and observations just got tedious after a while. Realised I wasn't laughing when I used to. He Was great in mando and BB though. Think ill stick to his not comedy TV work
I really enjoyed F is for Family. You might too, it's definitely not PC and was surprised it made 5 seasons on Netflix.

Bo Burnham: Inside was awarded best show of 2021, and that’s a comedy.

We have hope!

I would honestly love it if somebody could recommend a comedy movie with jokes that haven't already been done in other movies.

The last movie that I found genuinely funny was "Superbad," and even that movie had jokes repeated from other movies. It's so hard to find original comedy nowadays.

I want Clerks 3 to not suck soooooo badly

Please Kevin Smith, pull this one through.

I can't even remember the last time I was this excited for a new movie.

I remember when I would look forward to every movie he put out, but dudes lost it IMO.
Clerks 2 had maybe 1 or 2 funny scenes but the rest of the movie felt like .. hey remember this joke from Clerks, here it is again.

After the reboot, my expectations are low. Everyone involved is just so old now it’s kind of painful to watch. Brodie in particular just lost his punch although I don’t think that character is really featured in the clerks movies

The hunger for comedy is clearly there, we just need more comedians or creators who don’t give a shit. I thought about starting game videos for this very reason

This was the last great comedy I saw in theaters:
Popstar_Lonely_Island.jpg

Very underrated, if I remember right it completely bombed in the box office and I never see anyone talk about it.

Please do yourself a favor and check out out of you haven't already, especially if you're a music fan.
Quoting this, if you haven’t seen popstar you are seriously missing out. Also get the soundtrack afterwards.

Jumanji is a kids movie.

I assume Bad Boys is an action movie with some comic relief.

I mean something like The Hangover or American Pie that is just a straight comedy.

Not a film but for anyone who hasn’t seen it I’d highly recommend I Think You Should Leave. Incredible sketch show.

Dude I came in here to recommend I Think You Should Leave and you have no idea how jazzed I am to see someone else giving it props. It is easily the funniest thing I've watched in years, it's so absurd.

It's weird. Even though comedies kept turning decent profits (they're almost always very low budget), it seems like studios stopped making them in the mid 2010's. Wish I knew why.

It isn’t dead. We see it in Always Sunny and Curb. There’s just not a lot of people who are good at writing it in movie form.
Always sunny is pretty great. Curb can be funny but the last episode with Vindmen was funny with the exception of the vindmen stuff.

I watched Liar Liar the other day and had the same thought.

There are basically no niche comedies anymore.

It’s because they don’t make “uninhibited comedy” anymore. Everything today has to pass either the PC or societal sniff test. There’s no room for truly inspired comedy anymore unfortunately. Pour a beer out for the classics….before they get rehashed or remade.

Proper jokes are no longer allowed, cause the best ones are about something that people manage to always get offended by.

I dunno. I'm always laughing at something these days, intentional or otherwise. Go watch Popstar.

If we're going to judge everything by a handful of classics, nothing will ever beat Airplane anyway.

I miss the days of real comedies, like Hot Shots and The Naked Gun.

Related, I watched David Zucker's last movie, An American Carol, and it was maybe seriously the worst movie I have ever seen. Like it's intending to funny but it's too angry and butthurt to find a joke about anything so it's just a bunch of people walking around going "I hate freedom."

Just watched 200 Cigarettes, a late 90s NYC NYE sex comedy. Damn, not only is the cast amazing, even Courtney Love holds her own though she is up against prime Paul Ruud. It manages to have a wide range of characters without feeling like anything is forced or pandering. So refreshing!

There are still plenty of good comedies but I don't think they do the kind of box office they used to. Right now people aren't showing up to theaters for anything other than big dumb action movies. They'll watch comedies at home.

This year Mandibles made me laugh my ass off. And Pig.

It is pretty upsetting, comedies are just gone. The state of comedy in general is just.. it is gone. Comedians are no longer welcome in this world, they are too scared, and the spotlight is off of them unless they check a bunch of boxes. To be fair I have no qualms about the "box-checking comedians" but that is only if they are generally FUNNY, PROVOCATIVE, IRREVERENT - or just plain weirdos. But those people are not welcome anymore and probably won't be again for awhile. I cannot remember the last time I watched a movie at random on a streaming service and felt like "whoa that was consistently humorous!" Maybe a Coen brothers film or something, but even then that is a specific niche (dark humor wrapped around a weirdo narrative). Seth Rogen/Apatow etc had potential but I feel like it's been awhile since those types have felt comfortable letting loose. Would love to see a world where Louis CK/Chris Rock/etc could just cut loose and do something wild but that is clearly not happening for all the usual reasons.
