Xbox Game Pass is delivering more than ever, but will gamers notice?

Then stop warring

Does PS+ Extra/Premium get the same amount of critizism, I wonder? 🤔
Any company that has a subscription service for online, rented games, or even a storefront with microtransactions are cocksuckers. That is with games, watching show apps on Apples TV thing, etc.

There is a reason I have no Hulu, PS plus, Xbox live, Netflix, car apps that want me to pay to hit the unlock button on my phone, etc, I'm not some bitch that will just throw money I worked for in my fireplace. I have some sort of aversion to being bent over and done in dry by companies. If I cannot own it outright, or it is physical that I don't really own, it doesn't get bought.

I'm sure I'm not the only one, so yes Sony is just as horrible as the rest.

Most gamers want to play the games they want, not the games Microsoft curates for them. Over the past year I've mostly played FF7 Rebirth, Elden Ring DLC, Metaphor, Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty and KCD2.

None of those games are on Gamepass. So a subscription would be a waste for me. I don't have time to play any more games. The above is like 350+ hours of games. Gamepass seems like a decent option for people with a lot of free time who want to save a few bucks.

Expedition 33 is the first Gamepass game I'm actually going to purchase. I dont really feel like I'm missing out not subscribing (especially when the rest of my year is after Expedition is Desth Strandinf 2, Ghost of Wotai, new Mafia, Pirate Yakuza and GTA6, all non Gamepass games).

That's if you really want to play these games. My backlog is enormous with some stellar games available for a fiver, mine to keep forever.

If you're a PC gamer gamepass is a decent complimentary service, nothing amazing.

Full disclosure I do have PC gamepass and I was ready to cancel it until the recent influx of good games. However, if the price increases again then it's getting cancelled instantly.

I dropped Game Pass this year after 5 years.

It's a good service if you are wired into the MS/Xbox ecosystem which I was for close to 20 years.

My main issue is my backlog is so big that I don't have the time to sit down with the newest releases that show up on Game Pass. If it's multiplatform stuff from MS, I'll just wait for the prices to drop on the PS5 version of the title whenever that may be at least as it pertains to stuff like Indiana Jones and Doom.

Is Game Pass a good value? I think so as long as you are using it. If you were like me and not using it, it becomes a bad value, but that has literally nothing to do with MS in my case. Too many games, and not enough time.

The fact that you imagine people in the world care about gamepass that aren't already subscribed is hilarious.

Yeah, the reaction is so big we got em working in shifts. /s

Microsoft should drop gamepass before it drags them down further. Once they have no console their profits will tank if they are relying only on gamepass and not boxed sales. Only selling on Playstation can save them. PC gamers don't buy or play slate releases, just older f2p games, so I don't know what money Microsoft imagines there is to make on PC once their console subs die out? The people that do care should be worried. The shit is about done. Think I'm wrong? /remindme 5 years

If they don't, are Xbox users gonna buy them? It's a chicken and egg thing unfortunately. Might as well get the check from MS and be done with it.

The developers get something out of it, whether it's the up-front money, help in development, help in marketing etc.

The notion that it's bad for the developers and yet many still keep putting games out on it is a weak argument at best.

It's not whether it's bad for them or not, it's whether they have much better options. The Xbox user base has been trained not to buy games for years at this point. Either you release it anyway and risk it, or follow the path of least resistance and cut a deal with MS to get as much out of it as you can, at least that's how I see it.

Game Pass is great value for a select group of gamers who:

- only play on Xbox
- only play games on Game Pass
- don't care about games that are not on Game Pass
- do nothing else but play games
- play and finish multiple games a month

- enjoy titles in every single genre: shooters, WRPGs, sports games, quirky indy games, puzzle games, Metroidvanias, souslike games and more)

But for mainstream gamers who generally buy and play the most popular games (FIFA, GTA, Fortnite) and big AAA games (Assassin's Creed, Cyberpunk 2077, Kingdom Come, etc) the case for Game Pass is much weaker. These people:

- own a PC, PS5 or a gaming PC with Steam instead of an Xbox
- want to play their favorite games/genres first and foremost instead of playing only what's available on Game Pass
- see the games available on Game Pass as a side dish instead of the main course
- don't play games every day for a couple of hours
- play and finish just a handful of games a year
- enjoy titles in just a handful of genres

Why subscribe to Game Pass if the vast majority of your gaming time is spent on finishing a couple of big games a year that are NOT on Game Pass? It makes much more sense to simply buy the few titles on Game Pass that caught your attention when they're discounted than to subscribe for a year and feel like you're wasting money every time you play a game that's not on that service?

People say Game Pass is the Netflix of gaming, but when you get Netflix just about every single person in your family will watch movies and tv series on that service, whereas with Game Pass it will be just you. That makes it harder to justify a subscription that's not being used to the fullest
What's up with the bolded?

I only play on PC, and I play a ton of games outside of Gamepass. But in the case where a Gamepass game interest me it simply makes it cheaper to play day 1, then I can buy the games I want to own on Steam sales later. There is no downside to it really. The service cost me 1 full priced game per year with stacking methods. There are MS rewards solutions as well but I'm too lazy for that.

This year I've played 4 Gamepass games and 2 more will be played before summer, then I'm sure something will pop up second half of the year too. Can't see any scenario why it wouldn't be worth it as long as I can keep getting it cheap.

I compared it to give an idea of value. There's lots of value in Gamepass. Especially when compared to competition

Again, the only space where there is real "competition" is with consoles and Game Pass ain't exactly moving the needle there. Pretty much puts an exclamation point behind "value is subjective".

Play whatever and wherever you want mate.

Gamepass has lots of value. Even without the 1st party games of the last year.

Literally a week after Phil said it's not for everyone.

These goons never learn.

Articles like this seem like a reaction to Phil's interview, imo. He's saying something everyone with common sense has been saying since the subscription's inception - it's not for everybody - and some react by trying to push it even harder to millions of people who have repeatedly shown they have no interest. If MS makes any more moves or comments indicating a pulling back from Game Pass, it will be interesting to see if the evangelizing steps up even more or if people like Jez just start to tow the party line.

Everyone has their own opinion on that. For me, I've been subscribed to GP for a few years now thanks to MS Rewards. If I had to pay then it would be a month at a time when there was something I wanted to play. Just as I do with Ubisoft+. But to each their own.

In that scenario I think they go in to overdrive because those who have been subscribed this whole time and don't purchase any games outside of that stand to lose access to everything. This is especially true for those who have been stupid enough to purchase DLC for games they only have access to via gamepass.

I think it's currently a good deal, but I think in the long run this model would be terrible for gaming, so I choose not to support it. I suspect the deal would soon become less good if they succeeded in moving most people and devs to the subscription model.
Like destroying a console brand all together ?
I don't think Game Pass is crying though

So you do see value in gamepass, cause you subscribe to it from time to time.

See, it wasn't that hard.

I never said otherwise, now did I? I've been promoting MS Rewards to pay for GP for years. I wrote the dang OT.

Of course.

I see tremendous value in Ubi+ as well.

Doesn't mean I am subscribed to it all the time. Mostly cause of time constraints, am playing other stuff.

When someone questions value of a service like this, I take it they never subscribe to it.

Great deal for those that are into subscriptions. I am not into them. I will just keep buying the games I want, and not playing the games I don't want. At my convenience.
The convenience of NOT playing games for months at a time is a big deal for me. I bought Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition for like 60% off a year and a half ago and still haven't started it. Bought Shadow of the Erdtree, FF7 Rebirth, etc ages ago and haven't started them. But it's totally fine, because they're there forever, I'm not in a hurry at all

Conversely, I feel like my PS Plus Extra membership is a total waste, since I still haven't played Jedi Survivor or TLOU 1 Remake. Makes me a lil anxious.

Why always add games coming in several weeks/months rather than focusing on available games ? They always do that, every year « game pass is amazing in 2022, we'll get Fable, Redfall, Starfield, Hellblade 2 »

4 of the 7 games in that tweet were already out when it was made.

Don't smoke in the morning, kids.

I can definitely see some panic, but I was thinking more about people like Jez. I glanced over the article in the OP and he couldn't even let a criticism he made of MS in a previous article stand without backtracking:

I criticized Microsoft a bit last week for opting to shadow drop Oblivion on top of games like Towerborne and Clair Obscur, but perhaps I was too harsh, and thinking too inwardly.

He and others have been and still are pushing Game Pass and, until now, that seemed to be the path MS was on too. It just makes me wonder how long it will take certain media outlets/influencers (ie. people who tweet) to flip on this topic if MS again de-emphasizes it as the best way to play games.

Sure. I wasn't questioning the value for myself. I certainly see value in it in tandem with MS Rewards. But we can look at this from a broader gamer perspective as well.

So when I say « why always add games that are coming in several weeks/months », your response is « well some of them all already out ».

I'll rephrase it so maybe you'll understand it better: « why do some people, when they make game pass games to show its value, always add games that aren't released yet in addition to the already available games ? »

To highlight its existing and continued perceptual value.

I did just pay a dolla to play Oblivion for the next 2 weeks. And then I might pay another dolla to play another 2 weeks after that.

Much value but def not great for Xbox pockets

Meh..

It's so easy to get it cheap. Right now a year of Core is $70 Canadian on Amazon. That converts to 6 months of ultimate.

How can you complain about $12 canadian a month for Ultimate?

I don't give 2 shits about owning games. Games are depreciating assets. I swear some of yall of hoarders.

From my POV, GP has never been appealing as an ongoing subscription. I can see dipping in and out when a particular game calls you, and yet you don't want to buy it. But subscribing on an ongoing basis doesn't suit me. I don't play enough games to make it worthwhile. And there's something about having a subscription that makes me want to use it - meaning I end up playing more than I really want to, just because I'm subscribed.

I bought a new Samsung TV a couple weeks ago, and it has the Xbox app installed. So I can sub to GP on that, if I want to. I haven't had the urge to do that yet, but I may someday. I'm not so short on cash that saving $20 here and there is a big deal to me. I throw away hundreds of dollars on stupid shit all the time, so spending an extra $20 to own vs. rent doesn't bother me.

I don't play as many games on Game Pass due to lack of time, but I keep subscribing so that the service continues to grow, Game Pass is getting better and better.

Oh man, I feel old now: Renting a game for 3 days in 1995 from Blockbuster was around 4 Dollars (8.25 in todays money).

Do you have a wood subscription for your fireplace? 🤔😏

Same discussion with Spotify?
Renting a game from Blockbuster for 3 days did cost 4$ back in the day (8$ with inflation)

Can't we just agree that everyone can get and play games the way they want?

People are noticing now. I predict the summer months will be dry because they frontloaded so many games and a few people will complain. When the fall comes Game Pass hype will be start again because you will have new CoD, Silksong, Outer Worlds 2 and Ninja Gaiden 4.

I stacked it 2 years high when it was cheap on PC but hardly used it back then, it was not the peak of gamepass.

Nowadays? I can still afford buying the games on Steam and did so for Indiana Jones, Avowed, Clair obscur, Oblivion and will for Doom dark ages, but I can see the insane value of gamepass if you're short on cash. I would have freaked out to have this service when I was short on cash when I was younger.

Ive used it since September after 20 odd yrs on psn and I think its great, Espescially since its free with rewards .I dont mind tapping a few buttons while im on the shitter to play a great selection of games. Also I'm not the type to keep physical so its all gravy for me personally

Sony doesn't push it as their main business model and obfuscate and lie about its performance or intentions.

They don't have shills writing fluff articles every 28 to 30 days like a menstrual cycle.

Maybe that's why nobody thinks about it as often or has weekly threads on here about it.

All sub services are booboo.

Man, this year has probably one of, if not the, best lineup of new games coming day 1 on the service.

Another Game Pass appreciation thread. Love it. 💚

Who tha fuck is that buttmunch?
Gamepass only makes sense if you like mid games and play mid games on a regular basis. The occasional great games are few and far between. I have been trying a lot of games on Xbox gamepass on My brother series x. The quality of the allegedly bangers is questionable. People get used to crappy stuff and enjoy it.

You said it . What the feck is that buttmunch

It's going to take more than just the Oblivion remaster being a success to make gamepass a lot bigger, it will need a string of successes on Oblivion's level to make me change to a subscription model, i like to own my games for a start so i can mod if i need to, which is another issue at the moment with some gaming corp's telling us we don't own them anyway,

This is just PR jumping on a bandwagon after the success of a really well known game being remastered well, he didn't say this before Oblivion RM became a hit while mentioning all the other games he brought up before finally saying Oblivion in the article lol. and most of them didn't do Oblivion's numbers or anywhere near, more top games are needed, not just 1. and it sold well on Steam not Xbox.

Nah, I'd rather buy Oblivion and play it at my leisure over several months without having to worry about a subscription time (one that's gonna be more expensive than just buying after a couple of months).
