Xbox Game Pass is delivering more than ever, but will gamers notice?

Oh man, I feel old now: Renting a game for 3 days in 1995 from Blockbuster was around 4 Dollars (8.25 in todays money).

Do you have a wood subscription for your fireplace? 🤔😏

Same discussion with Spotify?
Renting a game from Blockbuster for 3 days did cost 4$ back in the day (8$ with inflation)

Can't we just agree that everyone can get and play games the way they want?
Sure as heck can, brother. No, I don't have Spotify or the apple music on my phone, either.

I just don't enjoy lining others pockets with my monthly subscriptions and owning, nothing. I only speak for myself, of course.

As a consumer, none of this is your problem, is it?
oh as a consumer it definitely is my problem.

first this brain team at xbox had a master plan of spending competition out of business with daddy's money, as read directly from their inbox.
so end goal was never competition, but monopoly.

for this they sold to their bosses an idiotic subscription revolution pipedream, with netflix of gaming targets.
we all know how that turned out

and because they burned 100billion+ they didn't earn in pursuit of this bs, they are now in crosshairs of some number crunchers at ms, who don't have any interest in gaming.

what do you think will happen to all the studios they gobbled up in the process, if their desperate third party push also fails to produce results.

i guess we can always act surprised at next round of studio closures.

I never said otherwise, now did I? I've been promoting MS Rewards to pay for GP for years. I wrote the dang OT.

Best topic in GAF history. I've bought so much digital content, codes and GP upgrades via rewards since this gen started.

Full support on that. If it wasn't so damn convenient …

This post nails it. It's for people that treat gaming like McDonald's - fast meal, they don't finish games, they frequently jump between games and genres. Also the mention about "do nothing else but play games" is spot on, it's really for the hardcore.
The service has so many releases that it's worth it even if you finish one game a month

I use it a lot. The last few years have been pretty bonkers for me. Playing gems like lies of p and many more.

I think its a great service but I can completely understand how it doesn't resonate with some people who like to buy a game or play 1 or 2 titles a year outside of a gaas title or something.
I play a lot of games but it just never clicked with me. It just felt like whatever game I wanted to play wasn't on the service and while it had other games I wanted to play I didn't want to play them at that time. Like Lies of P. Great game, I love souls like but I had no interest in playing it when it was released on GP and I just recently bought it and played it.

Sometimes the kind of game I wanted to play was on the service (scarlet nexus, Yakuza) and it would be great but it was very rare.

What exactly is Gamepass delivering? These games are available almost everywhere! Why the constant need to try make this rental service a thing? Fuck me it's insane. Gamers have spoken loud and clear- they want to buy and not rent.
It is kind of weird the constant promotion of it. When gamefly was around you never saw people going crazy over that.

The developers get something out of it, whether it's the up-front money, help in development, help in marketing etc.

The notion that it's bad for the developers and yet many still keep putting games out on it is a weak argument at best.

Like my man said:

Being on GP does not prohibit direct sales and games don't stay on the service forever. For those who liked a game on the service, they can buy it with the 20% discount when/before it leaves.

Ultimately it's the developed / publisher's choice to sign up. GP is just a 'storefront'.

True, I suppose...though how'd that work out for South of Midnight?

😂 hilarious gif.

I noticed. But for example, I bought Oblivion on Steam even with Gamepass. MS PC gaming is flat out atrocious. The games are often in a worse state than the Steam versions, as their cert times are delayed, poor mod support, optimization issues, and generally feature poor. Gamepass basically an indefinite rental service where I can decide if I like it enough to buy it for Steam.

Very new to PC gaming world as I have been console all my life, but it was really strange a month or so ago when I was playing Balatro on PC Game Pass (on the clock :pie_raybans:) and wanted to play in Windowed mode, I learned that the Steam version of the game has a whole graphics options tab in the menu, the Xbox PC version doesn't. I found a guide online to mod one of the files to force a window mode.

I like Game Pass, probably more than most and that's fine people are allowed to not like whatever they want, but man, that is so, SO friggin' weird about versioning and delayed cert times. YOU WOULD THINK they'd be all over that.

I understand the 'value' of Gamepass based on the numerical value of the games contained within( as far as price) compared to what you pay for it, but there is also a 'value' in having your games independent of a sub service that you choose and play at your whim. There's more value for me going on a site like CDkeys and buying discounted games that I dont need to continue paying for monthly/yearly to access. That's not what I want my primary method of gaming to be.

Yea there's even games that aren't fully updated to the latest version while the Steam version is. Devs are literally just abandoning the game on Xbox PC store. Jez has talked about it. MS really needs to clean up all these issues before their next hybrid comes out or it's not going to work. Seeing as how the store has been shit since release I doubt it happens.

You don't expect people to talk about GamePass in a GamePass thread?
It's right there in the title.
There's talking about it (for some reason these people treat it like it's a fucking console that has games on this "system") and then there's people quite literally wanting gamepass to succeed as it's the greatest thing on earth that only they know about! NO- we ALL know about it. Most of us just choose to not waste our money on the renting of games.

It's an amazing service imho but you have to be a pretty hardcore gamer to get the most value out of it. Casuals just play Fortnite and 2k on PS5. They don't need GamePass.

LOL @ this idea that gamers don't want sub services though. These consoles are all built on subscriptions. The problem for MS with GamePass is it isn't an app you can throw onto any device and just consume and even when it reaches that point, games don't stream as well as video content. Another problem for the growth of the service is nothing is exclusive to it. If I want to watch the last season of Stranger Things I have to subscribe to Netflix. If I want to play Doom next month I can sub to GamePass or buy it the same day on Xbox or PS5 or PC.

So it's in this weird limbo where it is available on PC, but using a store everyone hates. It's available on console, but only on Xbox, the last place console. It's available on some devices to stream, but streaming games on xCloud is doodoo.

I also am curious why people claim it is killing the Xbox business, where do these people think the brand was before GamePass came along?

Microsoft has way more to offer to gaming atm than Sony. Much more 1st party titles. And yet people play Sony consoles where there aren't even any new 1st party games.

Why?

Same reason as why people go to McDonald's instead of trying something new. These people only play Fifa, CoD and Minecraft on the same console as their friends do. Afraid to try something new (in life).

I own all consoles and Microsoft gets 80% of my playtime for one reason only: there are new (high quality) games to play.

Leave a laughing emo if you want. Facts are facts. Sony hasn't got any new games.

H-o-l-y sheeeeit at the complete and utter lack of self awareness, you can't make this shit up, you people are literally like a cult at this point...

PRAISE BE OUR LORD AND SAVIOR HOLYSOFT
HIS SON PHIL WILL PAY FOR ALL OUR SINS

Yep. Part of the cult that likes great games and owning all consoles to play the great games.

Apparently, members of your cult are also fond of constant biblepass shilling so what do i know eh ?

PS: it's always the same patten with fanatics like yourself :
- "I have all the consoles"
- " we like playing games "
- always downplaying the opposition
- "Exclusives are bad" (now that's convenient to say obviously).

Meanwhile, something ain't working 'cause "your" games are also coming to the opposing platforms 😁

Here's a thought : Maybe you and the rest of the boyos should have actually spent a dime in buying the games instead of renting them, maybe, just maybe, things would have gone differently.

I cannot identify with anything you just said. So, have a good night.

Look, I'll say this, if your ownership of a Sony console is weighing on you so much that it's leading you to behave like this then there's a simple solution - sell it to someone who wants it.
If it is sold, he loses the "but I have a PS5" credibility to be a "neutral" gamer.

I am fully aware I probably seem that way with my XBSX since I rarely play it. I do play Xbox games on PC so there is that.... 😜

At some point MS needs to realize this isn't something the majority of gamers actually want.

Sony approach has proven to be the right approach. Use sub services as a way to make supplemental income largely from renting access to older games. Occasionally smaller day 1 game.

I feel like MS actually kind of does "get this" but they are having trouble turning back from their promise of all 1st party being on GamePass.

Yeah, someone holding up their console ownership as some kind of shield is long held tradition of console warriors. One of the oldest tricks in the book and I laugh every time I see someone trying to use it still. Does anyone think they are fooling folks with this nonsense?

It's the "I have black friends" of console warring 🤣

The answer to the OP's question will be whether GP sub rates substantially rise and continue to rise. When and whether we get that information, who knows.

No.

People stopped buying xboxes because they were tired of hearing all the losers talk about GP.

Now, if GP can fail hard so we can talk games up, as opposed to a shovelware rental service that would be nice.

For every you, there is a me.
If that were true, there'd be no Microsoft games on PlayStation.

It's more accurate to say for every million people that don't like or want gamepass, there's 1 person that does.

It's not even a guaranteed sell to people with xboxs.

Maybe you'd have been able to get away with 'shovelware rental' right after Redfall got released. Now? Lmao

For some, yes. Others, no. Back in the day, Blockbuster rented a ton of games. Gamefly still exists today and if folks didn't want to rent they would have long since gone belly up. So there is a market for video game rentals. Personally I have no issue renting a game rather than buying it. I am not a collector. The vast majority of games I play only once. I typically sell my games on ebay when I'm done playing. I think if there was a digital service that included all games for rent rather than buy then it would be very popular, but publishers would lose money so that won't happen. Either way, I don't think it is a matter of "gamers have spoken" as much as gamers have not been presented with a rental service that appeals to the masses.

If "Gamer have spoken", then the same "gamers" have spoken by continuing to subscribe to services like Gamefly or Gamepass which keeps them afloat.

I love that I have a choice to either buy what I want or continue a cheap sub service that lets me rent out dozens of games, many I am just a little bit curious to try but not enough to put down full MSRP and then struggle to re-sell it once I am done with it.

Macho Man Deal With It GIF

You can tell how good anything Xbox is by the amount of crying and whinging from the PS bootlickers.
Gamepass: bad deal, anticosumer

PS pro with no disc drive included or stand. Also no CPU upgrade, so basically bottlenecked: amazing value, best console ever made. Mark Cerny is a genius!

Can't take this post serious. Sony has been moneyhatting the comp out of business since sega was around, lmfao. As usual with Sony fanatics. It's only bad when the other "side" does it.

Microsoft should drop gamepass before it drags them down further. Once they have no console their profits will tank if they are relying only on gamepass and not boxed sales. Only selling on Playstation can save them. PC gamers don't buy or play slate releases, just older f2p games, so I don't know what money Microsoft imagines there is to make on PC once their console subs die out? The people that do care should be worried. The shit is about done. Think I'm wrong? /remindme 5 years
People on PC don't buy day one games for 70 bucks, because the platform has 300,000 games+emulation. Little different on console. Where the lifeblood is AAA games.

It killed xbox as a console platform, so hopefully we won't ear much from this kind of garbage anymore.

PSNow clients were never an annoyance, same for Nintendo's equivalent, nor Humble Bundle, etc. Heck, even those who get the free games on Epic don't bring it up in every single conversations, trying to frame games as "Epic free games" or some other B.S. that makes the GP crowd sound like a bunch used cars sales man.

Seriously, I can't wait for MS to get out of this garbage so we won't have to ear from it anymore.

I just laugh at the binary nature of the argument that people seem to cleave to.

As if it has to be good or bad, ignoring the fact that there is a time and content element so value will be highly variable both across the potential market and also for individuals over time. I think MS are finding out just how variable the value argument is turning out for customers. ie: very hard to lock people in full time on the service.

Probably doesn't help that all the netflix's of the world have already trained a lot of people to ration subs and flip between them.
