Are there too many games coming out? Who is supposed to play and, above all, buy all this?

Whenever I start youtube and look at my subscriptions, I see about 10 new games almost every day, if not more. Of course, not everything is good or AAA, but I wonder who is supposed to play all that? Or has that much money.

Yes - there are too many games coming out for the market to support. Lot's of games that hit Steam are the only game that developer will ever make, they don't find an audience, they don't make any money, and the people who made them move on to other things.

Tons of games I want to play. Skipped Metaphor for Ys X. Been playing the Diablo 4 expansion in the meantime and it’s great. Still wanna finish the post game SMT V stuff as well. Still playing Tekken 8 nearly every day.

I think next year I will play all the shit I missed this year.

No is is suggesting you buy/play any of them. Let alone all of them.

Also, not everything is for everyone.

Anime is the same issue.

I disagree here. I love Anime. I have 450+ shows on my plex server and I have it setup to download everything new that is released. There's a lot of junk out there and so many of them follow damn near the exact same plot line with very little changes.

As far as games yea there is to many and I don't know what will happen. I expect eventually most of these companies will just start failing and only the strong will survive. We are pretty much seeing that already.

I find the problem is more playing games to complete them, rather than spending the time with them and enjoying the journey fully. But if I did that I'd still be walking round random locations in GTA V

It is a weird situation IMO, there is way too many bland by the numbers games with other undesirable quirks like HFW and below, and not enough fresh eye catching one offs, like the PS3 gen had in abundance.

I've got one or two too many GaaS games to play this gen, and far too few other games I want to play.

my question is, who really wants to play, & above all, buy all this? i just got silent hill 2 remake. i'm not really seeing anything else i want...

My backlog has never been larger. It's to the point where I've largely put a hiatus on buying brand new games. Though I did just buy Astro Bot when it came out and put it the top of my queue playing that over the rest of my backlog.

Most of them are wank anyway.

Just find the one that actually looks fun to play and give it a go. You'll find that list shrinks a whole lot when you base it on quality gameplay

I remember buying and playing only a handful of games in a year back in the day. Now it's like there are dozens releasing every week. Not interested in them all obviously but there are a lot I'd like to play but will never get to them all.

No different with movies and tv shows. You have to know your own preferences enough to focus on the things you will get the most enjoyment out of. Games that are a "maybe" you put on the back burner and wait for a sale or a dry spot to come along. And make peace with the fact you'll never experience it all, there's just not enough time in the day. It's the old Tyranny of Choice, too many choices make people feel FOMO with the things they do pick, whether it's games or items in a grocery aisle.

It's just not possible to play everything, you have to prioritize what interests you the most.

I also tend to avoid games that can really steal my time, you know, something like Civilization or Stellaris. I always have this thought how many cool games I could play (and maybe finish) in the same amount of time as completing a single campaign in a big strategy game.

IMO there are way too many games out and coming out to the point where it can be very overwhelming especially if you are rapidly accumulating a backlog. Sure, you’re not obligated to buy them all, but I suppose I’m the type of person that likes to try many types of games and experiment new things often. The one thing no one seems to ever talk about is the over abundance in game releases could definitely be contributing to some games failing to meet sales expectations and causing studio closures left and right.

You must be a new age gamer. During the PS2 and PS3 days we used to dred the months of March and November. Especially November because they'd release damn near 3 to 5 games a week.

its like film and television and music, no one is expected to consume it all. its all different audiences (except for here where everyone feels compelled to play everything)

Easy, we live age of internet you, choose which one you are willing to spend time playing then get those games.

You dont have to buy every game that comes out....just like you are not gonna read or watch every book and movies that comes out.

Dont overthink it.

It's a problem that isn't really being talked about enough. You have an increasing large amount of games coming out where people are already time and money starved that will shelve smaller stuff unless they really stand out. It's far easier to put something on hold with a backlog of games thinking you'll pick stuff up later on a sale only to be swamped by the new games getting released.

It's actually why I think it doesn't matter that some games have a longer production schedule unless you're only in it for those very few specific games.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
It really just depends on how much time you have to dedicate to gaming. Lots of games can be finished in less than 20 hours, and for me that's fully doable in a week's time. If you distribute what you play evenly between new games, old games, retro games, etc. then you're really not buying more than 10 or so in a given year. On a year when a lot of things you want to play come out, the number might get closer to 20 (I'm personally at 18 new games purchased this year, and have another 4-5 left to buy of things I want to play). Finishing 52 games in a year is certainly doable, I'm currently at 45 completed so far. The length of the games you choose and the amount of time you have to game will have an effect on that number - for example if you play 500 hours of Call of Duty, you probably won't have time to play anything else. There are also tons of really great indie games that take less than four hours to complete, and if that's your cup of tea then you might find yourself playing tons of different things.

Like Danjin44 Danjin44 said, don't overthink it. Play what tickles your fancy and have fun.

probably some good stuff coming out that i don't even know exists. there’s always an opportunity cost playing games so picking what game to play next is a very big deal if ur a gamer with limited time since you might have to stick with that game for awhile before you complete it. U end up just choosing the biggest most well regarded games with the most hype a lot of times and still end up passing over some amazing games it’s a predicament

I have to play at least 15 games before February. Because I have a mark on my calendar that says “Civ VII release date” and after that the iPhone app only displays a render of a black hole and a sticky note eternally falling towards it that reads: install yourself a douche and intravenous nutrition.
