Arkham Knight PC patch out. 626mb (9/3/15) [Patch 1]

So yeh uhh...no, this patch broke the game for me.

2560x1080
Win10
GTX970
i7 4770k
16gb Ram

It defaulted to all High / 60fps. Game rarely hit 60, sat at low 50's, frequently dropped to around 40fps.

Went into menu, set everything to Normal just to see what it would gain. It actually dropped to 20fps with frequent pauses over 1 second between frames and was a sporadic mess.

I was holding a solid 30fps before this patch. Now, it's dead Jim.

That is pretty bad if you don't have G-Sync. And SMH @ the pause when calling the batmobile.

What? I just played it looking like that for two hours and it's perfectly fine. I did get freezes like that Batmobile one on two occasions, though. Once transitioning to a cutscene, and once loading in a huge new section of the map. Still not a huge deal. If you've ever played an Unreal Engine 3 game before, especially an open-world one, you know some hitching is inevitable. A lot of people need to realize this and stop thinking it's still broken because it's not 100% smooth.

Crucial MX100 SSD 512 GB (OS)/ Crucial M500 SSD 960 GB (Where the game is installed)
Windows 10 64-bit

Playing it on my 1080p TV with everything maxed and every nVidia setting on. I don't think I have seen the game fall below 60 FPS yet and I played for an hour and a half. I am really pleased with this patch :) . Absolutely no hitching or stuttering either.
We have pretty much the same system aside from OS and SSD brand, i have an 850 evo, I can't get a stable 60, frame drops to 50ish while gliding or driving, only nvidia effects on are enhanced rain and lights, if i enable smoke and paper forget about it

Game is essentially fixed for me. Everything on max except with smoke off, pretty much locked 60 except for a few minor dips to 56, even while driving. Played up through the first major main story section
scarecrow toxin plant
. It never ran "horribly" for me before (high 50s as batman, 30fps while driving), but it was bad enough for me to not want to keep going. With the fix, it looks way better with the upgraded assets and runs much smoother to boot.

Still a little bit of framepacing/microstutter issues here and there, but essentially playable now. Wonder if capping in rivatuner will fix that.

When I was shopping there wasn't any 4gB models available, had to settle between the 2gB 960 or the 280x.

You did right to chose the 280X. I honestly would have done the same, I've never been unhappy with my Nvidia cards but between a 960 and 280X it's clear the latter is more future proof.

Wonder why people are getting such big differences in performance after the patch. Other people on 970s are saying they get nearly 60fps constant, I wasn't even getting close.

5820k, 980ti, 16gb ram, ssd, everything maxed @ 1440p

Wayyyyy smoother after the patch. Getting 75-90fps in the batmobile now when I was lucky to get 60 before.

Hopefully it's even better by the time I'm bored with MGS5 and have time to play it.

Game already ran pretty well for me pre-patch, but the patch fixes the Batmobile framerates for me. Smooth 60 batmobile, finally!

However, I still get microstutters while gliding around the city, but I'm going to attribute that to an engine issue because I noticed the same thing in City and Origins which I replayed very recently.

Unfortunately I'm still get some pretty major stutters, like the screen will freeze completely. Oddly enough, whether I lock to 30fps or 60.

On the plus side, the game recovers completely - there's not that gradual degradation of performance.

Might be a Win 7 thing. Haven't switched to 10 yet. I'm also pushing my Vram on my 970 right to the edge, though it is in the green.

Playing at 1080p, this patch is a huge improvement on my rig. Feels soooo good to be at 60fps, especially in combat. Only seem to have stutters at random when driving fast or gliding fast through the city. Everything on High except textures; haven't tried High yet. Do not have the Nvidia smoke or paper/debris on either.

Consoles have 6gb available, not 8. 5gb on Xbox One actually.

That said it was a foregone conclusion that VRAM requirements would go way up. In order to have console-class assets 3gb is needed, I don't find that outrageous at all.

People with 2gb cards knew what was going to happen with graphically intensive games.

Yep, I did mention that in my first reply to the guy. Some is reserved for the OS, but it shouldn't be any surprise at all that games developed for a new console generation with 16 times as much RAM as the previous generation will make use of those resources for larger textures.

Ok I've figured out why I was getting the stuttering. I had paper/debris turned on, which was pushing my 970 a bit too close to the Vram threshold. The game is pretty punishing. Uses a lot of Vram.

But with paper/debris and enhanced smoke off, and everything else maxed, I am getting a very smooth experience at 1080p.

I also seem to be getting a better experience by forcing vsync through the nvidia control panel, as opposed to using the game's own vsync.

There are still frame rate drops, like when you're gunning around in the batmobile or gliding sometimes, but they're not too noticeable. It feels smooth.

If I had to guess (and I am guessing here, since I haven't had the opportunity to benchmark the game personally), I would say that the stuttering issues had more to do CPU-side optimization than GPU. Probably a lot of cache misses in their code, and those sorts of bugs can increase the execution time of a chunk of code by 10x or more. I bet the GPUs in these systems weren't even being stressed because they were idling waiting for the CPU.

I have the same specs (including resolution)
But with a i7 4790k
My framerate is 60 a large amount of the time.
A few minor dips here and there.

New nVidia optimizer update just came out. Here's what it recommends for my 970:

I actually had fired up the game with everything turned up to max minus the smoke. That's the only way I could keep it under the memory limit on this thing.

There is something so funny (but not) about the optimal settings having every nvidia setting off. What D. Horseshit.

Overall the patch improved the performance but there still are some sudden framedrops out of nowhere for a splitsecond.
Also the raindrop effects at least on the batmobile are still not on the same level as consoles, when you start a new game they work fine but after restarting the game they don't look as good anymore.
didn't check DoF or SSAO if they've improved those.

Cross post from the PC performance thread. I'd test it out more but I already beat it on PS4 and just want to keep playing Metal Gear. I'd wait for some more thorough tests from others, might just be something on my PC being shitty.

________________________________________________________________________

Well initial impressions is that it's better but still pretty dogshit (for me at least). The game takes a full minute or more to start and still doesn't properly close when I quit, have to kill via task manager. With all NVIDIA stuff off but all the other settings turned up I dip down to as low as 33fps in the batmobile, which is better than the 15 before. Gliding around the city, again is much better. With the framerate capped to 90 and vsync off I get as high as 80fps and as low as mid 40's flying around. It also is seemingly pushing my RAM and CPU to near max, while only pushing my GPU to about 45% power.

I've got a 980ti, 17-2600k @ 4.4, 8GB RAM, and Windows 10.

Very curious to see how this patch is for others. It's absolutely made things better, but it's still fairly brutal to play.

WTF? I've honestly never heard of having to constantly close a game via task manager. I knew this game was messed up but god damn that is bad.

I'm baffled at how many of you with 970/980's are happy to be getting 60fps but are only playing at 1080p.

Like, what?

Patch broke it for me :( was somewhat playable before... now it looks like this

Anyone else got this problem?

980, Windows 10, Running of a SSD

Check the graphical options, it should have way more options like the image a few posts above yours.

Ok I do have the options so evidently it's patched. damn it still hitches everywhere. I wonder why as I'm rocking a 980 3570k and I hit 60 but it's not locked by any means. Hitches and drops still occur everywhere.

I didn't have anything that bad, but I was having textures not load. If you were or are using any third party stuff stop using it and delete your config folder under

SteamsteamappscommonBatman Arkham KnightBMGame

I was using a program that changed how the game streamed textures via ini edits. Once I deleted the config folder and let steam re-download it everything was fine. Also ditch trilinear and use AFx16.

I'm fine with FXAA too, even in games where other options are available :p

Honestly I just prefer the bells and whistles over extra IQ. My 970's GPU usage is running 85~99% all the time for AK post patch anyway, so it's not like there's that much overhead.

THIS FIXED IT :)

\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Batman Arkham Knight\BMGame

Delete the Config directory then re-verify game cache

Sounds good, but missing graphical effects from the PS4 version (rain stuff) is still lame.

At least it sounds like I can finally play it on my SLI 980s though, pre-patch I was still getting drops below 30fps and it was pretty bad.

Only? I play on a 55" high end LED with 7.1 surround sound. I'd take that over a small monitor at 4k any day.

Unless you meant something else.

Weren't the rain drop effects fixed in a patch AGES ago?

Are they missing again now? Currently away.

I think he's inferring that 970s and especially 980s should be able to downsample the game to a degree

I rarely ever play at 1080 resolution, I'm content with 1152 x 720. It seems weird or to others it'll seem squishy but for me it's pretty similar to 1920 x 1080 on a 21.5 monitor. Happy to sacrifice some things (shorter view) for a slight increase in fps, but it varies with the game I play.

Also someone mentioned how the game stutters at "autosave" points ? I found that to be the case with Arkham games in the past... at least with Arkham Asylum the game would run smooth as butter every other time, except when opening doors to get to the next area (figured it was for the save mechanism to kick in back then).

It's good that they are patching up the game but really it's just trying to fix an already terrible port job, I would think that it's always going to suffer in areas unless it was completely redone, patching can only go so far.
