As a console gamer my whole life, I think I'm going PC next gen.

Yeah, I would consider myself primarily a console gamer, specifically PlayStation. Been with the brand since PS1 pretty much. But I've been thinking about the ps6 lately, and my ps5.

I think I might be ready to ditch consoles and switch to PC next gen.

It's no one thing PlayStation did wrong necessarily. It's just another one of those death by a thousand cuts. But a few things....

1. Paying for online is frankly bullshit.
I bought hell divers 2 on launch on PlayStation and a month of online which cost me 14 Canadian.
So PC players who bought it on steam and Sony got 70% of that vs me who bought it on console and gave 100%, I also have to pay an extra fee to play it?
Man fuck you lol

Now a year later I want to go back and pick it up again, but of course online got jacked up another $2 to $16. So pay up.

And for what? To play your first party game?

Nahh man. I'm done being a sucker.

2. Sony porting their Games to PC.
SIngle player is about 75% of my game time, and the primary reason I stuck with console.
But it seems like EVERYTHING goes to steam and epic. PlayStation games, Xbox games, indie games, switch exclusive games. If you are a PC player, you pretty much get everything.

3. Demos. I love demos man. So I always get jealous when steam has these steam next fest events. I always feel like I'm missing out on some big gaming event. PlayStation doesn't have anything for me except a middle finger.

4. Folders. Why I gotta deal with this EVERY generation.

5. Huge deals. I regularly see these big triple a games going for like $5. On console, $20 is a deal.

6. Steam= free cloud saves
Consoles= take a guess

Anyways, just been thinking about this lately. Adding up all the pros vs cons, and it just seems like a no brainer. Yeah the upfront cost can be huge. 100%. Probably double or triple the price of a console, but I feel like the experience is much better.

I don't plan on buying a pc until the ps6 is out, but the fact that I'm even considering switching to PC is fucking bizarre for me. But it feels kinda good.
I'm already scouting PC parts right now lol.

Anyone else make the jump like I'm going to do?

You should temper those expectations a bit.

I tried to make the jump for a lot of the same reasons you listed. To many random issues I had on PC though and I realized I just prefer how easy it is on console. I also hated how some games had no controller support. Meanwhile they released the game on PS\Xbox and it has controller support made no sense. Also why the hell do I have to go through like 3 menus to exit games it's annoying as hell.

Sounds like a good idea. I think you can game on multiple devices and not just one device. Unless you are poor.

PC has everything. And if it doesn't right now, it will.

Back-compat with everything ever produced, tons of indie, niche, and ultra specialized games.

Mods, peripherals, big communities.

And it's cheaper, both in the long run and even from the get go, if you know what you're doing.

Free online, better deals.

This ad was brought to you by me.

Glad to see people seeing the light. Console gaming is like being stuck on Plato's cavern: sure is nice down there but you don't realize on all the stuff you are missing out until you get out of there.

Some tips:

- Check out if any of your friends already has a Steam account. If they don't mind they could add you to their family group, meaning you'll have access to a lot of games right from the get go. I did that for 2 of my irl friends and they are still thanking me lol.
- Steam prices can be nice but there's also key resellers. Most games I buy day 1 nowadays are between 40 and 50 euros.
- Don't toss or sell you PS peripherals since they are probably compatible with a PC.
- Super obvios, but playing on PC on the big TV is as easy as pluging in an HDMI cable, meaning couch gaming but with all the added benefits of the PC.
- Start saving money, now. :goog_relieved:

To be fair to all sides, Microsoft is actually winning this way the whole time.

Steam and Switch for me and I've been a PlayStation guy my whole life but they just stopped making the types of games I like. PS4 was probably the last Sony console I'll ever own.

It has crossed my mind but I don't really want a desktop PC, and I'm perfectly happy with my current MacBook.

I might go for a "SteamDeck 2" if/when that happens. Unless the Ps6 and/or rumored PlayStation handheld looks particularly awesome.

I expect the next console generation to have a very long cross-gen period. I intend on eventually upgrading my PS5 to a PS5 Pro and riding out the cross-gen period. When games are no longer cross-gen, I will sit there and evaluate where the market stands and if it's worth buying another console or going pure PC.

Ed: By that point, GTA6 will have come and gone on consoles and probably be ported to PC anyway.

You won't regret it, been a console player from the Nintendo days all the way to the PS3 days until I made the switch and never looked back.

It's very doable. For me, PC made PS5 pretty much useless. Easily my least used console ever.

PC = better graphics, more control options, lower price, free online, + mods. Plus portability with Steam Deck.

PS5 makes sense for a lot of people but not for me.

I'd have switched years ago if the prices of PC components in my country weren't so expensive.
At this point I'm just hoping a decent GPU eventually becomes affordable, or maybe Steam or MS do actually release a new products that's sort of like a more affordable pre built PC. I miss when a mid tier GPU was like $450 instead of $900.

Hello I build gaming PCs for my friends. I currently game on PS5 but have all platforms. My current GPU is a 3080 but it needs to be upgraded.

My advice is to be careful. If you have never gamed on PC the grass may be greener on the other side. If you build your new PC and it starts fucking up you have created a lot of work and expense for yourself. Remember this post if it happens. I'm sure I sound like a negative Nancy right now but just let the seed be planted and remember IF it all goes to shit who warned you these things happen. The people who quote me and tell you that this will never happen and this isn't relevant, remember how confident they were when the times comes and let us know who the voice of reason was here.

I made the jump early on in the ps4 generation cause at the beginning that gen didn't look so hot, then got a ps4 pro around 2016 when God of War hit and played some more amazing games on it. Then the PS5 gen hit and it was such a letdown that I went back. It's been around 2 years now I think but there isn't a single day where I don't glaze my PC. It's fucking awesome to be back and it's the best hardware related decision I've made in a long time. Looking into the future I'm pretty sure it's PC all the way for me from this point onward. If you ask me there's never been a better time to make the switch to PC.

BUT!

You might have to prepare for some shenanigans at the beginning if you aren't used to dealing with PC gaming. There might be some unforeseen problems that you might have to fix here and there, like trying to find out why game x has this issue. It's a very open platform, but that also means you might run into more problems. However, if you can get through this at the beginning, you'll be set. I remember early on where I had issues like games not running like they are supposed to or crashes that I couldn't figure out why they happen. Like I was playing a Yakuza game and it just couldn't stop crashing despite my PC being more than capable. Turns out there was a setting in my BIOS that pushed my CPU a teeny tiny bit too much that I had to change. Stuff like that.

The payoff later on is great, but be aware that it's not plug and play like a console when you first get into it. You have plenty of time still, but I also suggest to start saving up now. You never know!

This might happen and it's relevant for sure.

OP, remember that some stores allow you to pick the PC parts and then pay an extra 50 buckos to get the clerks to assemble it, test it and verify that everything's alright. It's a little extra to make sure the experience goes as smooth as butter, and I definetly recommend it if you are now to the PC world.

Costs are what's holding me back from jumping on PC.

I can't justify the costs with the amount of game time I have. PC gaming isn't cheap and would set me back a four figure sum, plus I'd need a monitor to go with it.

If GPUs weren't so offensively expensive then I'd jump in.

PC Gaming is the cheapest gaming platform.

Why?

GamePass, CD-Keys, Game trades via Steam and Yo-Ho-Ho and all that....

The inital outlay may be expensive.

However, the cost of games is way cheaper, 1000s of mods, better features, more stable FPS/RTX etc.

PC is good if you are patient and spend a lot of money on it. And that's not a jab

Its not all sunshine and rainbows. 9070xt PC and PS5 Pro owner.

Like for me- every game runs great, BUT:

- COD BLOPS 6 is plagued with DirectX crashes for months now without a fix. I can't play at all. Resurgence and MW2 are problem free.

- Pathtracing keeps crashing (9070xt issue) on CP2077.

- Helldivers 2 had an issue with a setting that constantly crashed. Only way around it was to lower it even though your GPU can handle it just fine (SSR I believe).

- Stutter can be worse than console on stuttery games (Dead Space and UE5 games in general come to mind).

PC does provide generally a better experience (if you have the $$$) and no online cost like console, however you may need to deal with issues that may actually stop you from playing certains games for an unknown period of time.

it mostly gets messed when

A. People use it for things other than gaming and install a bunch of crap bogging down the background services plus /// porn site viruses ///
B. Windows Update says "Surprise MF... Im resetting all your settings! and blocking new things that you do not currently know about! "
C. You do stupid shit like go to download hacks , cracks , and pirated games / classic roms. etc.. more viruses

I run gaming ONLY pcs and do not have half the issues others claim to have. but those windows updates will mess things up from time to time.

That's only some Sony games and that's what, 1% of all the new games?

Thinking of buying a Steamdeck.
I'd recommend it mostly if you already have a nice Steam library. The Deck sure is the backlog killer, it's motivated me to play a lot of indies and old games in it.

PC ports are just not at the state where I can go 100% PC at this point. Played MH Wilds on PC and it was an utter disaster.
It's not a port and the 720p console version is better how??

Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Mario Kart, Xenoblade .... whatever other AAA / critically praised / 10 million + seller / best games on earth... Nintendo pumps out.
Except MKW, all are on PC and better. Eventually MKW and the rest will also go to PC.

You waited 2-3 years for Sea of Thieves, Forza Horizon, etc too and they are filled with issues too. OP will be ok.
