They're more of an excuse for Ash to bounce jokes off of.
In and out of themselves, they're not very funny at all.

Yeah, they do nothing for me. The cop isn't much of a character either. Lucy Lawless is the only one I want to see aside from Ash so far.

I wasn't in love with this "Brujo" episode. It definitely needed a longer runtime, everything felt rushed. And I know they were going for a cliffhanger ending, but it just felt like it ended abruptly.

The possession angle is nice. I was wondering what those brain cell visuals in the last episode meant. It felt like they are going somewhere with it, so now we're finally seeing the repercussions.

And Lucy Lawless' character is soooooo up to something. I can't wait until she finally mets up with Ash.

This episode had a lot more focus on the side characters, but actively did make me like them all a bit more, so that's good. Maybe for the first time in the series they actually got a few laughs out of me.

So, some things.

The scenes
with the possessed Kelly slowly wrapping Pablo into a web was appropriately a mixture of tense and amusing to watch happen. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing I find possessed Kelly to be funnier. Sexual Shotgun Bong is also quite an interesting scenic piece, cool, yes good tense coil.

Nice Exorcism-centric episode for Evil Dead.
Didn't realize this was something I wanted, and outside of obvious fake CG puke when spit out, the effects were nice and appropriately disgusting. I kind of wish the demon talked more, but regardless. Ash's occasional comments as the stuff went on were on-point.

I also liked how different the demon worked to Ash's weaknesses as well.
As in, it wants Ash to kill her, and plays off what Ash knows and is used to doing in these situations. When the demon acts like Kelly pleading Ash to kill her was a nice reversal on the normalcy of these situations.

And
Demon Battle round 2.
I liked Ash's revelation moment
of how to beat the demon, he just shouldn't think at all.

Liked the imagery at the end.

I liked the episode, wasn't the best episode, but it did do something important for me at least; make me like the two main side characters a bit more. Still need a bit more growing on me, but now they're in like territory for me. I also am hoping Pablo
will eventually become a badass shaman/priest type who can crack jokes,
I see the characters have development ahead of them now, and that's a good thing.

---

Also, next episode preview for some reason has me really excited. I might just love the setting for Evil Dead hijinks even if its such a normal location,
and see Pablo suddenly being badass slide and shooting
.And looks like the next episode will focus more focally than before which Evil Dead fans are all too familiar with. Looks like it'll be a fun episode.

I agree. Pablo and Kelly proved their worth in this episode. They have good chemistry together and showed they can function without Ash around. Look forward to seeing where the season is going. But I do wonder
if they are ever at risk of dying. They saved Kelly or so we we think. Ash has only successfully saved 1 person from being a Deadite and that was in AoD, which may not be canon here. But anyway, if Kelly is saved would they still kill her, or Pablo, off. Are these characters untouchable?

I've actually been pondering this. In Evil Dead, part of the films undeniably is characters coming... and going. I'll accept Kelly is alive right now and the exorcism themed episode. This was a straight-up demon, as opposed to what we're used to, and so forth and on, and a lower-level demon at that apparently. or what was identified as, "The Weakest Demon." I think Kelly has more ahead of her, and I'll accept that she can overcome that. But things will obviously get tougher and more shall happen, it's really out there id these characters are going to be untouchable or that they'll eventually die. I think part of the fun is not knowing, and I do want them to have the ability to write their deaths well and for it to be something that can happen. Not specifically soon or anything, but part of the Evil Dead series is characters dying, Ash has at numerous points had to kill those closest to him. I am wondering if this will eventually come to that, or if they're the safe untouchable supporting cast. While I am growing more fond of them, I honestly hope they're not untouchable, since I feel that would take something away from the show despite coming to like Kelly and Pablo more now.

This absolutely should have been a miniseries, these 25 minute episodes are clearly not meant to be watched week to week

The show really isn't that great. I'm sad about that. The first episode was amazing and exactly what I wanted. The second episode you could feel that it was much less without Raimi, but it was still entertaining. Every episode since has been pretty terrible. Bad dialogue (and not in the good way), pretty limited action (and none of it that creative), and poor pacing. At this point attempts to even mimic Raimi's directing style seem completely gone as well.

It's a real shame. I hope the show turns around or that Raimi comes back to direct more in season 2. Or at the very least that he, Ivan, and Tom Spezialy write more episodes. It's just...not what it needs to be without them.

I do like the show but I have been feeling the week to week wait for the short episodes is hindering my enjoyment which I don't think has ever effected my feelings towards a show before. I'm not sure it works for the show, Netflix may have been a better format. Next season, I'll probably wait for the whole season to air before watching.

Agreed.
Luckily we have the fantastic Scream Queens as this years go-to horror-comedy :)

I feel like this was the weakest episode of the season. But it had a great ending at least. Kelly possessed was kinda cool though.

Slow episode but whoever decided to close out the last scene with stranglehold deserves a raise

The music, both score and licensed, for this series has been beyond excellent. Even using PJ Harvey when they're in the car with the hand was fantastic.

makes good threads.
Yeah, this episode was the weakest one for me so far. There were a lot of moments that just came up limp which could have been cool if executed properly. Feels like they were attempting a more character driven episode for both Ash and Pablo. While Pablo's character moments kind of works in the end, sadly Ash's big moment was just shy of being cool. These directors really need to go back and study how Raimi executes his scenes of badassery, or even look at how Fede Alvarez handled the reboot in terms of taking Raimi's style and adding his own twists to it.

The next two episodes will have Spartacus director, Michael Hurst, at helm so we'll see how he handles things. Hopefully now that we're passed the midway point it should be about that time to start getting things escalated in Evil Dead fashion right? Maybe once they
finally get to the cabin everything will start clicking.

Quick thoughts (SPOILERS):

-Gagged Ash was probably the funniest thing in this episode.
-Kelly's possessed form came off more like something from Night of the Demons than Evil Dead.
-Is there any reason to have CG pupils instead of just contacts?
-Dana DeLorenzo has a good enough voice to probably be able to pull off a great, crazy deadite. Shame that they felt they needed to go with Dr. Claw's.
-The "just shy" moment for me was Ash's realization, the gun flip, the kill, and the quip. Tighter editing and more pronounced camera angles would've made all the difference in the world.
-I guess Kelly does know that Ash is wholly responsible for her dad's death, and yet is totally joking about it at the end. Come on Ruby. Drive some sense into her!
-Directors, look at how Raimi handled Ash's gauntlet moment in AoD, and then look at how you handled yours. See the difference?
-Episode kind of closed off pretty neatly. No real stinger for what may come next.

Since it was mentioned earlier, I also hope that these characters have very weak plot armor. It wouldn't be Evil Dead if bad shit doesn't happen to Ash's friends. At least half of the crew should be possessed, mutilated, or buried in the dirt by the season's end. It would be a crying shame to see the Evil Dead series play it safe.

The timing is suspicious, the Darkness turning up around the same time as Ash's 'Fuccckkkk' moment reading the book? Definitely linked.

Although it's nice to see an approach to kicking demon ass that doesn't revolve around furrowed brows and obvious secrets.

Yeah true Enk, if he's got the guantlet, heroic music played, and used it to do something cool, that would have been much better.

Heck it could have played into the fight, the chainsaw didn't do anything. Pablo mentions the hand earlier, brings it in, then throws it to ash, it attaches in classic AOD chainsaw fashion, Ash catches the shotgun with his new hand, thus catching the demon by surprise. Boom.

"Thanks for lending a hand Palbo".

Enjoyed it. Pretty bummed that the brujo died because I liked the character. Episodes feel very short, that's my only complaint. Maybe it's because I enjoy it so much.

Liking the show, but none of the episodes have lived up to the pilot, let alone the IP. They seem to not know if they are aping ed2 or AoD from episode to episode, and even scene to scene, and its a bit jarring. It lacks its own rythem and voice. Also, ash's crew are bad. Baaaad. It seems they wanted a Napoleon dynamite Pablo, but this guy ain't it. And Lucy lawless just drags any scene she's in to d-list territory. I'm having fun, but definitely disappointed.
