Great episode, I preferred it to the second one. I thought generally it was funnier than the previous episode and design of the demon was great. Sure, it looked pretty obviously inspired by Del Toro's Pale Man, but the vibrating skin was a great touch that gave it a lot.
Special effects were great too, aside from the mentioned glass shards. Generally I'm enjoying it very much and I hope we're getting more Lucy Lawless in the next few episodes.
It was also way above the average movie monster design. It looked part practical, part cgi with the vibrating skin but the mouth staying in place. Pretty awesome and exactly the kind of 'demon' I want to see more of.
This episode was a bit like Supernatural lost its melancholic touch, switched out it's best season with a dump protagonist and got real gory suddenly and way more into a Hellraiser kinda mood and visual cues.
I hope the BluRay makes it here uncut and that they rap the whole affair up quite nicely.
I don't see this making it beyond two, three seasons max. And this is the last shot we get at a real Evil Dead that is wrapping everything up. This quality for 3 seasons is sounding like too much of a good thing though - even 1 season does tbh.
Enjoyed the third episode about as much as I enjoyed the second one. I still think Bassett's episodes are missing that "something" which Raimi's had, but still entertaining none the less. Now that the third episode is done we're moving away from Bassett's style and into some new, unknown territory! They really haven't shown much of anything passed the third episode, so I think I'm just going to go into the rest of them blind from this point forward.
Quick thoughts (SPOILERS):
- The flicking of the fork was cute.
- Oh shit! They finally brought back the skull dagger which hasn't been seen since Evil Dead 2! Hmm... Now where did we see that dagger last...
- Amanda Fisher is pretty much the equivalent of Evil Dead 2's Annie at this point.
- Ash showing a bit of depth when confronted with the "loneliness" comment.
- There was some really rough dialogue in this episode, but plenty of good lines to be found ("That's the spirit").
- I'm glad that even though we're getting into the history of the book, everything was in line with the series and was not detrimental. I'm guessing we're going to be seeing The Dark Ones at some point.
- While the new demon felt more Clive Barkian than Evil Deadian, Eligos was cool as hell.
- Once the circle was broken the intensity of that scene was very well done. The sudden disappearances and reappearances were effectively creepy rather than cheesy, as well as the shots entering of the minds of the characters. Kind of reminded me of some of the shots from Frank Henenlotter's Brain Damage.
- I hope this doesn't mean the end of Eligos. The very idea of this demon still lingering around could make for some very unexpected "sudden" appearances in the future.
- I really want to see the demon pictured on the next page. Now who would be dumb enough to summon that?
- Wait. How exactly did Ash lose his hand? Surely he's got a backup running around somewhere.
- Also I find it funny that no one has thought to ask him how he got rid of the evil the first time around. "Hey jefe, before we stupidly summon this thing how did you close the lid on this bottle in the first place"?
I thought the third episode was the weakest so far. It was just missing the humour for the most part and the writing was noticeably really bad by comparison to the first two. The conversation in the car especially was incredibly poor. The demon had a cool design though.
I feel like this episode was different in many ways. Did the show have like two pilots? Because there's what you said, Lucy Lawless not showing up until now is a little weird, the effects were WAY better this time and there was like a torrent of swearing that the other episodes didn't have. Feels like they were still ironing out the details with more than just the pilot, which is oddly reminiscent of Spartacus... I guess Starz does it like that?
He unhooked it from the socket to get out of the handcuffs. There was no excuse for why he didn't just pick it up but eh, we all know it's so he has a reason to build a new that has extendable claws or shoots nails so who cares.

I've been watching the episodes on Xfinity's online watching thing (Comcast is the only provider here) and subscribed to STARZ, so not helping the TV airing ratings, but hope my numbers of watching the episodes mean something!
Third episode was stronger in some areas and weaker in others to the first two, but another solid episode, meaning I'd say all three episodes are worth seeing. As an overall, I thought it was a bit weaker than the first two, but there were also things I liked about it more and it's only ever so slightly.
The humor and writing did see a dip in this episode in my opinion, there were still some funny moments and well-delivered dialogue, but it overall felt weaker, but then humor didn't seem the focus of the episode either. Horror tones however went up from the second episode, which this is something I want to compliment a lot for the TV series, they are nailing the Evil Dead horror/comedy ratio. I was kind of worried before it aired they wouldn't mesh them well, or comedy would overtake the horror as it often does in horror-comedies (but something Evil Dead series was good at), but no, they've done good at making the horror and comedy work, while also not making them feel separated. Not 'scary' horror per-say, but enjoyable dark and macabre without coming off as silly or dumb (unless intentional, ala the cursed doll in the first episode, and even then it still came off as a threat and a bit creepy).
Deadites are cool enemies, but I guess this week's monster was a proper demon thing (I'm guessing we're going to get more into the demons later?), but it was a good introduction to the demon enemy kind. I agree with you guys, the special effects this episode were a lot better than the previous two episodes (except the glass shards but that happens so quickly it's whatever). The effect they used on the demon so his whole body was stuttering and shaking and kind of looking like it had a VHS-filter applied over it, while the mouth stayed completely in focus and still despite the rest of the body quivering, was actively quite cool to look at, and yet also somewhat creepy. It seemed like a mix of practical effects and CG, but used well since it had a quality of looking real and fake at the same time, but which worked for this particular monster. And despite the monster having potential pitfalls to become silly, it avoided all of them and ended up being a cool serious monster (The turning invisible and teleporting thing could of been so dumb, but they actually executed it well. Also how the monster would attack people simply by standing in front of them and putting its hand near their face with the CG zoom in of arteries breaking/collapsing, but it managed to use it well and not make it seem dumb).
Bruce is nailing Ash as been said, his role in all three episodes has been consistently great, and is definitely helping the series a lot as it's making him a grounded 'base' for the show that I feel does amplify the entertainment. The other characters are being slightly more fleshed out, but to be honest I'm not too attached to any of them yet. But I also don't dislike any of them (even the cop), so I'm not turned off by them or anything, they're above indifference and have won me over a bit more since the first episode, but they're not in like territory for me yet.
Still, liked the third episode, and looks like next week's episode is going to flesh Pablo out more.
Now, two things about the monster and something I noticed while watching, since I have a theory on something:
The way the monster disappeared I think implies it might be back, it didn't die and was just... Put into the book I guess, but it feels like it was just stored away for later. Secondly, I noticed after Kelly put the demon in the book and was thrown back, there was a dark cloud for a couple seconds that surrounded her and went into her mouth. Does that mean Kelly's possessed by the darkness but playing them along, or is the Demon residing in her? The book said the demon could go into the mindscapes of those weak or tormented, and she's kind of got a few problems, so maybe the demon for the moment is residing in her somewhat? Just a thought.
---
Though as someone else said, now going into blind territory. All the ads and showcasings for the series seemed to be using stuff exclusively from the first three episodes, so now it's going into blind territory. And next week has the second of the two main writers, right? So to see if he's up to snuff with his debut episode. But outside of some things we know from hints before the series premiered (
like how the cabin is going to appear
), seems we're off into blind territory of knowing very little now.
I'd like to see an episode where they don't fight anything and just give us some lore and character building. I liked the book of the dead stuff in this one but it seems like they feel the need to put demon in there to fight for Ash to fight. So far the last two episodes have felt exactly the same where they arrive at a location, talk in the car a little bit then fight a demon.
Still enjoying it but if they do this again next episode I'll start to worry if there is any meat to the story or just monster closet fan service.

It's a great demon to keep the audience on their toes. Something that could just jump in at any random moment and cause chaos. Will make for a well earned jump scare if used effectively.

But due to Evil Dead hardly ever shying away from gruesome monster kills, the fact this was an introduction to a new enemy type for Evil Dead, and the fairly anti-climatic way it disappeared, plus after Kelly gets thrown to the side of the room after hitting it with the book I swear there's a cloud of shadows around her face for a couple seconds she inhales (and the book mentioned something about the demon being able to live in mindscapes of tormented people or something along those lines and Kelly could definitely fit that category), it seems highly likely. It felt more like a set-up for the monster than the actual course for the monster itself. Plus the show has already shown it can introduce monsters in one episode and then bring them back later, like the store manager from episode 1 that attacks in episode 2 or the dad meeting Kelly's mom in episode 1, getting killed in episode 2, and then coming back as a Deadite in episode 3. With the sort of stand-out design and the fact the monster can completely wreck Ash as he is now, it seems like a stronger adversary in the making. Though I have no problem with it, it was a cool monster and I would love to see it again in a more fleshed-out role.
Ash and Pablo's lines and relationship are really entertaining. The filler dialogue isn't strong, but those one liners are killing me. Plus the demon design in the 3rd episode was great.
Episode 3 made me fucking jump! That was a brilliant scare when the demon suddenl apeared right up in Ash's face. Another great episode. Outstanding creature design too. That thing was terrifying!
Yeah the demon was a cross between that creature in Pan's Labrynth, the teeth chatterer cenobite from Hellraiser and the reverse flash from The Flash. It was cool but if the show had a bigger budget it would've looked much better I'm sure.

I just got caught up and came away with one dominant line of thought: These episodes feel way too short. I felt blindsided when the second and third episodes ended lol.
i think that exact clip in that gif is the difference in having Rami direct, and someone else. when they came out of the flashback to ash saying "fuuuck" it was a perfect moment. the one liners in ep 3 were just as funny, but the timing seemed just a beat off. i really wish Rami was directing the first whole season.
despite the lack of the Rami spark, im loving this show. Bruce is gold as always, i like/love the supporting cast, the practical effects are really fun, the writing is still great, and the music choices are on point. Iggy and the Stooges! loved it.
The moment Ash gets attacked in the car was a moment where I missed Raimi the most so far. It would have been a perfect place for one of his camera zooms/jumps on the deadite.
Really? I think it's pretty tightly packed and eventful, and I don't even really notice the time difference between this and 40 minutes or 55 minute shows. Get the same level of satisfaction, have more of my free time left over!
Lol that would be something!
Just re watched Army Of Darkness today....so cheesy yet so great! Never knew that there were two different endings to the movie!
Any ratings news for episode 3? Someone posted elsewhere that the ratings were up a tiny bit and managed a .2 instead of a .1 but I can't find any numbers anywhere.

I've seen the first three episodes and they've all been fantastic. Great special effect and it feels like the Evil Dead of old with just the right bit of lore added in. New nerd demon was a real treat.
I don't mind the character but I agree the actress is poor. But perhaps she's just a misfired attempt at camp? Nah I think it was just a bad casting choice.
3rd episode was weaker than the first two, but still fun. I really liked the demon design. It's just that any time Ash is not on the screen is generally dull. But then Ash and Pablo come back and are fucking incredible together and it makes the duller scenes okay. I just hope they find a way to make the police officer interesting, because while she's very easy on the eyes she lacks the humor of the other characters and is mostly just a plot/expository vehicle thus far.
