That was the sore spot for me as well. It looked like an unfinished effect, and its too bad because that shot could've been a highlight of the episode if it was approached in a different manner.

I feel that way about the doll.
the doll scene would have been the highlight but I just couldn't stop thinking about how cgi it looked

I really liked all the comedy, but I want them to up the psychological horror for Ash in the next few episodes.

Like, let Bruce Campbell have some pathos

Just watched this and find it pretty good but they made Ash too much of a dick. He was more likeable in the films. I thought some of the jokes were a bit forced too. Otherwise very good and faithful to the series.

I liked the pilot. Not a massive fan of Evil Dead but this show seems fun. I wish the actor for Paco was a bit better because I like the idea of his character on paper. The police officer lady is far and away the most interesting character out of everyone

Ash was a huge prick in Army of Darkness.

Fuck, is there any legal way to watch this without a cable subscription. ..?

I havent had any interest in a television show since the early days of Sunny...

Damn that was an awesome episode. Can't wait for the rest and I am really excited that we have a season 2 confirmed.

I rewatched it with my gf and really loved this exchange:

- Pablo, do you believe in evil as a force of nature
- My uncle was a shaman

I'm really afraid where it can go. Pablo is very guillible and it works as of now, but he can easily be an incredibly annoying character.

Loved the first episode, they really nailed the comedic vibe and looney-toons action. Pretty much all I wanted from a new Evil Dead. That said I'm afraid the rest of the show isn't gonna be anywhere near as good. Obviously I base this on nothing but the first episode being diected by Raimi himself and the rest of the episodes being by different directors. The same thing happened with Walking Dead. The first episode was unbelievably good, like oh my God. Then from the second episode and the rest of the season it all felt really cheap and just not on point at all, to the point where I went from "this show could be an all time classic" to "this is just....really mediocre" in the span of just one episode.

Again, I base this just on the fact that Raimi isn't directing any episodes after this, but it's something that's happened before on many shows, where they just fail to grasp the right tone. I'm watching it all before making any more baseless assumptions, but it's just a real fear that I have for this show. I'm hoping I'm wrong though. At least we'll have had this awesome pilot.

I don't mind low-budget practical effects. It's the bad CG that doesn't sit right. That doll was some really terrible CG. But I get it; they're trying to do movie-level scenes on a TV budget.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
So I'm sure this has been asked and answered already but I don't want to search through the whole thread: This show only takes Evil Dead 2 as part of its universe, right? No Army of Darkness I'm guessing.

Well, as he traveled back in time at the end of ED2, he must've gotten back somehow. So AOD happened, but there are no references about how he got back from there.

This is the only thing that really detracted for me, cg in campy horror, and especially cg blood and gore, just doesn't work for me. I would've thought Raimi could get a bigger budget for more practical effects considering the pedigree.

That was a great first episode, better than I expected it to be. Hit a really good fun tone. Dont mind the odd rough effect here and there if it means we get awesome scenes like we did, worth it.

Bruce was awesome as usual. Glad to see Dana DeLorenzo in something, too. She's pretty cute. Last time I saw her was on Craig Ferguson.

man that was great. I like the creators are sticking with practical effects. They shouldn't also shy away with cheap budget techniques like the old movie.

I hope it can sustain episode one's tone for the season

makes good threads.
Well holy mother of triscuts. That thankfully met and mostly exceeded my expectations.

For me it wasn't when Ash first appeared on screen, but the moment the title screen hits and the set piece that followed which sold me on this being a true Evil Dead experience. The wicked, backwards headed demon and how it disjointedly seemed to "dance" to its victim with glee while taunting is the type of demon possession in which sets Evil Dead apart from the others of the same ilk. Even the 2013 film was missing a lot of this. Hopefully the following directors and writers realize that Ash is only half the piece of what makes Evil Dead entertaining and the other half is in the fun of how the evil is being displayed.

Other notes (spoilers):

- Lots of little Evil Dead 1 touches in that post title scene from the oddly angled car shot to the brightly lit, heavy fog.
- The real nostalgic feels came for me when Joseph LoDuca's classic Ash & Linda score played. I was not expecting that at all. Hope there's more of that from him through out.
- Glad that right off the bat we have a demon move around with half its head blown off. Shows The Walking Dead viewer what separates these monsters from zombies...
- But I hope that decapitations don't mean an end to possessions like they're implying as that would cut down on the potential fun stuff in the future.
- Weird to see a smartphone being used in Evil Dead. Even weirder to see Ash have dirty bathroom sex.
- Things missing: No floating demons saying things like "We will feast upon your soooouls"; No "Join us" (there were several instances where I was expecting it to come but never did)
- They changed the incantations yet again. Guess I'll have to update the title.
- While CGI is new to the series, it's handled with about the same amount of cartoonish tone that ED2 and AoD had. Let's face it, even at the time AoD had obviously cheesy effects, but we accepted it because of Evil Dead's inherent cartoonish nature.
- One thing that didn't quite gel with me was some of the music cues were set up near the end. It kept switching back and forth between LoDuca's Evil Dead beats with the other music pieces and felt weirdly uneven.

Now for the show's real growing pains to begin. I expect the next couple of episodes to be rough, but I'll await judgement of the show until the last episode. Even if it falls flat then, I guess we could always await another Raimi directed episode in the future.

what manner?

Maybe add a little detail such as a skull or brains being blow to bits. Maybe go for something that doesn't look like a glob of paint being thrown.

There have been plenty of head shots in horror flicks over the years that pulled it off better (ala Dawn of the Dead). I would prefer a practical effect but if that was not an option there has to be a way to improve the cgi. Overall I'm still happy with the effects in the episode though.

Yeah, while the CGI isn't great I didn't find it distractingly bad either.

It's been said by the producers that AoD did happen to this Ash, but they aren't referencing any of it... at least not for now.

Subbed. Just saw EP 1 and it was awesome. I still haven't seen Evil Dead 1 and 2, but Army of Darkness was funny as hell.

I'm a huge fan of Evil Dead 2, and I love me some Army of Darkness too. How exactly does a UK resident go about seeing the pilot? Without, y'know, paying money.

Joseph LoDuca really added a lot to the first episode. I loved when the opening title screen kicked in and we heard a short rendition of his Evil Dead theme.

Sam Raimi's wild camera angles were in full force here. They were a little toned downed from some of his previous movies, but still... that camera never really sat still. It's incredible to see this type of cinematography in a TV show where it is so easy to get away with lazy cameras. I feel like Raimi took every opportunity he got to use the cameras in neat ways. This really made it feel like I was watching Edil Dead.

- Glad that right off the bat we have a demon move around with half its head blown off. Shows The Walking Dead viewer what separates these monsters from zombies...

Yeah, the Evil Dead monsters were never really zombies. They were always possessed by the undead but also showed signs of intelligence.

-- But I hope that decapitations don't mean an end to possessions like they're implying as that would cut down on the potential fun stuff in the future.

I have a feeling that possessions will still be there. There was quite a bit of it in the first episode.

- Weird to see a smartphone being used in Evil Dead. Even weirder to see Ash have dirty bathroom sex.

Gotta move with the times. The bathroom sex thing was a bit weird and so was Ash smoking weed. But I guess they wanted to show how Ash lost direction in his life over the decades.
Yeah it was silly that he brought back the Deadites while high. But It is Ashes nature to bring these things back through stupid means.

- Things missing: No floating demons saying things like "We will feast upon your soooouls"; No "Join us" (there were several instances where I was expecting it to come but never did)

Yeah, I hope we see more of this. I would like to see some more "I'll swallow your soul, I'll swallow your souls!" action.

- They changed the incantations yet again. Guess I'll have to update the title.

I guess they didn't want to continue using chants from Plan 9 from Outer Space. That's OK.

- While CGI is new to the series, it's handled with about the same amount of cartoonish tone that ED2 and AoD had. Let's face it, even at the time AoD had obviously cheesy effects, but we accepted it because of Evil Dead's inherent cartoonish nature.

I dunno, Army of Darkness still had its moments. There were some great effects with the mini Ashes. But I do agree that the movie was made on the cheap, and not every effect was as good as it could've been. Shame about the under cooked CGI here, but I guess this is the budget they have to work with fro Starz. Sam still did a good job working with it.

Now for the show's real growing pains to begin. I expect the next couple of episodes to be rough, but I'll await judgement of the show until the last episode. Even if it falls flat then, I guess we could always await another Raimi directed episode in the future.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see how the other directors interrelate the material.

Ash was a huge prick in Army of Darkness.

and i read it as such that he has become an even more of a dick and he is very reluctant in returning to his old ways. And this adds weight to when he eventually does take up "arms" again and i feel he will be more badass in the upcoming episodes.

My favorite things were the bits where they eschewed any sense of realism just for a cool shot/effect, very akin to the original movies. Loved that the flashlight just WOULDN'T. STOP. SPINNING, loved that they didn't even try to make it look like the dad was holding his cell phone, and died when there was the shadow of the chainsaw but not the old lady. Absolutely brilliant.

This is gonna come in handy.

As for the effects. Well, it's a TV budget, it's just not possible to have every set piece be all practical effects. Even at comiccon they said they do as much as they possibly can becuase well, it's evil dead, but it's basically this or nothing. So just be happy with this.

Loved it. Can't wait for more.

On the flip side also watched Army of Darkness again after like 10 years. IMO it's not as amusing as I used to think it was. Evil Dead 1 and 2 is still amazing though.

Edit: Also cool to see that Ash is kind of bumbling and foolish until he accepts his destiny then become coordinated and awesome.

UK resident here too there are some sites for the downloading of certain files via a p2p network from what I have heard or phone apps for streaming although of course I would never do this or encourage others to do this.
