makes good threads.
Trying my best to skim through this thread and avoid spoilers. Glad to see a lot of people liking it so far. I'll be caught up with the rest of you all once I get back tomorrow night.

As for the discussion of Ash as a character, he was always reinvented with each movie. Each of the three movies he acted differently and from the interviews it sounded as though they've readjusted him yet again here. Of course I haven't seen the premiere yet so I can't have much of an opinion as to wether I like the new version or not.

Army of Darkness was the "big budget" version of the story. Universal went out for it and have the rights.

The first two films were largely low budget endeavors. From my understanding Universal wanted enough of a cut to make it not worth it. AoD is such an oddity too, that you can likely hint at it outside direct character names or "Hey, remember when I went back in time?"

Yea they can reference him going back in time since it technically happened at the end of Evil Dead 2, but they can't go into the specifics of what happened in AOD.

Anyways this was amazing. I cannot believe I live in a universe where this show is a real thing.

Eh...loved it. All Raimi-ism were there and fantastic. A couple parts fell really flat though. I guess they went way more anti-hero then even army of darkness, which were the scenes that were strange.

It's because the doll isn't CGI. They only used CGI to remove the rod.

It's so great to see Sam Raimi finally return to his great passion in life. Tormenting the living shit out of Bruce Campbell.

Premiere was great. It was amazing to see Bruce back as Ash. He was a lovable, cowardly dick that wasn't afraid to exploit a situation for his own benefit. Him becoming a sleazy dude picking up loose women in dive bars doesn't seem far removed, especially after 30 years of hard living. The comedy was on point, as was the horror. The house sequence and the closing trailer attack were fantastic. Can't wait for next week. Hail to the king, baby.

That scene in the beginning with Deadite Carson freaked me out. The way the whole thing was shot was great. Now I gotta find some way to convince myself to watch Evil Dead 2 since it's almost midnight...

Lets give it another ep or two. He clearly already had some amount of character development near the end of this one, resuming his role as groovy boomstick master.

That's true, it's just weird that he has presumably spent umpteen years being a bit of a creep and a using people. And the whole getting high and reciting the book thing (which was stored unsafely) - that takes a special kind of stupid.

That may be true for the first and part of the second movie, but they definitely gravitated way more towards "douchey and idiotic" in "Army of Darkness".

Hmm oh okay it's been forever since I've seen AoD. Not a fan of that movie so I guess I'm just remembering Ash as he was in the first 2.

Such a fun first episode and also perfect way to end it "Groovy". Hopefully the quality will be just as good for the rest of the season without Sam Raimi directing the eps.

I know it got renewed already but I do hope the ratings are good. Really hoping people watched this and that it's a show that could stick around for awhile.

I had pretty high expectations going in, but wow...amazing first episode! This series seems like it's going to be something special. Also, I didn't know Lucy Lawless was going to be in this...seems like she's going to have more than a cameo role.

Well, Ash has been a stockboy for 30 years and lives in a trailer park in a small town. That can change a man. Getting high and chasing women may be the only thing he's had to hang on to. But his mistake has actually given him a purpose again.

My wife, who loves The Walking Dead, was scared during the scene where the police investigate the creepy house. Had to turn it off and watch Fresh Off The Boat instead. ☹️

I finally saw the first episode. Loved it. Sam Raimi's directing was spot in, with so many of his trade mark "sam-o-cam" shots. The camera movement feels so organic and crazy most, it's amazing for a TV show. The use of practical effects was great. Some of the CGI could've been better though, but this is the nature or making a TV show. So I let that slid.

I loved the pacing in this and how it can jump between tense moments, to gory, to comedic and a mixture of all three. There are some really cool shots that add some really good atmosphere. I wish this was longer than 40 minutes, everything went by so fast. There is so much crammed into a 40 minute time frame that I feel like it could've been stretched out to two episodes and still worked.

You can tell that Raimi had a lot of fun co-writing and filming this. It has all the recognizable Raimi tropes. It is going to be hard to top the first episode.

This is the type of thing you would expect from Sam Raimi. He loves depicting Ash like a incompetent idiot. It is generally always Ash's fault for bring the deadites back.

I'm not a huge fan of the (first two - haven't seen the third) films, but I thought that was pretty fun. I really enjoyed the scene with the cops in the house.

The quality for the episode was great too. Didn't feel like some cheap Netflix show.

Netflix makes really high quality shows though!

Really good 1st ep. I know people will always dislike the needed build-up for a long returning series, so yeah it's slow. But the meat of it was neat. Fans have to remember most people watching TV have no exposure to the series.

Yeah, I totally get that. Because they don;t have the rights to AOD, it feels like they had to retell the back story from the first two movies, it actually felt like an amalgamation of ED1 and ED2. But it was pretty well done. Adding new character is great for people not familiar with the movies, this gives Ash a lot of reason to re-explain things as the show goes along. Though to be honest, the Evil Dead series has always been kind of open for reinterpretation. Things do change from movie to movie.

I think the first episode did fine reestablishing everything.

Some CG effects were iffy but god damn was it on point. Just everything one could have expected of the show.

The reason for deadites returning was so absurdly dumb, I love it.

I think I've outgrown Raimi style slapstick horror. Drag Me to Hell bored the hell out of me recently..

... But everything involving Ash was on point. His character shines here.

My favorite scene is in the camper when he says "mommy should have taught you to knock" and blows that zombies head off after smashing it into the cabinet. So good. I love Bruce Cambells delivery of Ash's lines. Just great.

Wtf is this shit about people wanting Ash to have guilt trips and redeeming himself?

He's Ash, a big selfish, accidental hero douchebag and I wouldnt expect any less 30 years later.

The first episode was great but left me wanting more. Daredevil binge watching spoiled me.

My review is pretty much:

I will admit, I'm predisposed to like that show, I want to like that show, I'm really happy that it's getting made and I'm happy for all the people involved, so yeah, I might be a bit biased, but fuck it, I had a ton of fun with it. Here's my more verbose review -

Man, that was as good as I could hope it to be, which is to say, pretty damn fucking groovy.
No, not all the jokes landed, but they nailed the tone, at least for me. Just enough scary(ish) stuff, just enough jump scares, just enough humor, and a healthy serving of Bruce fucking Campbell doing Bruce fucking Campbell things.
There were a lot of callbacks to the old movies, which is fine for the pilot, but I hope they carve their own way a bit more as the season progress.

Other than that, some of the CGI felt out of place, but there was enough practical effects to keep me happy.
Also, we need more Lucy Lawless (which I'm sure we'll get).

Song choices were ace as well.

Yeah, great first episode.. Ash acts as I would imagine him in his old years, so I have no problems with him.. atmosphere is good, actors are fine, practical effects are great, CGI is fine in most cases - the only one time when I didn't like it was this part:

But other than that, it serves well enough.. it's cheesy, but that's just how Evil Dead should be.. so yeah, I am very satisfied with the first episode.. now I'm curious how the other director(s) is (are) going to handle the rest of the season

That was the sore spot for me as well. It looked like an unfinished effect, and its too bad because that shot could've been a highlight of the episode if it was approached in a different manner.

Fun show, but why is Ash so douchey and idiotic in this? He was way more likable and smart in the movies. :/
He had his moments but he always did his share of dumb things like forgetting the words to chant before leaving with the book of the dead.

They do, but there are times where you can see the puppet strings if you know what I mean.. Still higher quality than most network broadcasts for sure.

Ah man that was great. Anybody got a list of songs that played during the first episode? Also, no gif from when he changes his teeth?
