Assassin's Creed II - The |OT|

So I just got to Tuscany and there's this guy with an arrow pointing downwards above him running around on the rooftops. What's that all about? I caught up with him and tackled him off of a building so he died and looted his corpse. Is that a bad thing?

You don't have to kill him: just tackle him and you'll automatically get his loot. That's all he is there for, though, for mad loot. 1500 a tackle.

Of course after you upgrade the Villa you'll never want for florins again.

Nope; those are Borgia messengers, who often carry 1500+ florins on their person. If you're short on dough, they're definitely worth the effort to take down. Not to mention that they have pretty unpredictable AI, so they can make for some really fun chases. You even get an achievement/trophy for taking one down yourself!

I always chase those guys, regardless of the money. It's fun. They inevitably end up getting a blade through the back of their skull for troubling me, though.

Once I chased one of the messangers down all across the rooftops, and I got him to the edge of a large tower and he jumped off, killing himself :lol

lol, this one time I was chasing one of them down and momentarily lost him, but I saw his icon on the mini-map and it wasn't moving, and I found him sprawled on the ground having apparently fallen to his death. :lol It happened completely off-screen, I never saw it. I looted his body and got the full amount.

Yesterday I was going after a thief who stole my money. I ran after him, chased him down, guards came after me, dealt with the guards and I spotted him again on a rooftop. I just kept missing jumps and he really pissed me off. He jumped down, I followed only to trip over a bunch of NPC's. He ran away again and I finally got to him and beat the shit out of him. That chase must've lasted about 10 minutes or so and it was pretty intense with all the archers trying to shoot me and rocks flying over my head.

Fun stuff:

You can throw a knife at a Borgia Messenger or again a pickpocket and it will give you the money they have even if you're far away from them!

Speaking of the messengers(forgot their exact name) in AC 2...imagine if NPCs had self awareness only of their environment and could feel. That poor bastard had to scream at the top of his lungs knowing that Ezio would most likely come to either kill him or in rare cases tack him. His knows his death is almost imminent but he still has to do as he's programmed because that's his sole reason and purpose in that instance. What a tragic existence that must be.

That's how the whole mess started, I threw a knife at the thief, it hit the guard that was also chasing him. Not to mention I hired a bunch of courtesans by accident and they tagged along for the ride as well.

There's an assassination contract in Venice which requires you to follow a thief as he moves through the rooftops, until he eventually shows you the target to kill. It took me like 5 tries because he KEPT dying. He would randomly engage a guard and then get thrown off a ledge and fall to his death. Or once I was trying to follow him, and I bumped into him during a climb because I was faster, and he fell.... to his death. Over and over. It made me glad there were no real escort missions in the story, because the AI clearly has a few issues with this. :lol

*Is the mission design still the same where you need to do certain cookie cutter side missions to unlock the actual assassination?

Nope. There are still side missions, but the main story needs nothing of the sort, just go to the starting point of the next mission and you're set.

*Are the stealth elements actually good? Are there more escape routes than just fucking diving into a stack of hay that is strewn about all over the cities?

There are one or two more escape routes like water, but the change here is mostly the more complex city design which will have you thinking where to go instead of just mindlessly running forward.

*Speaking of cities.... is there actually any diversification in the multiple cities? The first AC was basically 1 huge city but with 3 different color filters.

Yes! Obviously the... "theme" is similar, but the main cities are pretty different.

*What about NPCs? Are they actually smarter now? Can they recognize you among white monks/scholars or do they still have trouble doing that?

It's more or less the same, but the notoriety system and the disappearence of the monks (now you can blend with many small groups of people) shake things up a little bit.

*Is the combat system worth a damn? I am not looking for DMC/NG stuff here, even something along the lines of POP combat would be nice. AC1 had atrocious combat, I should not be able to take on 30 soldiers simultaneously... yes there is even an achievement for it.

It's the same but with more movements and weapons. Now enemies can block you counters and attack you from behind, but it's not really hard. It looks badass though :p

*Is the story actually good? First one started off well story wise but at the very end it dropped a bomb that was just insanely retarded. You KNOW what I am talking about...

Yep. It's intriguing and a huge step forward from the first game. If you didn't like that I'm not sure if you'll like some parts of this one, but Ezio's story is pretty solid in comparison with Altair's.

*Is there any solid replay value to the game other than collecting some stupid flags? First game I had absolutely no reason to play the game again other than collect the flag which was insanely difficult because you couldn't keep track of where you found certain flags and spotting them in the wild was so difficult because their color matched the palette of the city too well.

There are many side missions which are actually fun to do this time around, you can use money to buy stuff and improve your villa (which in return will give you more money), there are chests and feathers to be found, they're easy to keep track of and there are a few secret puzzles that show some backstory. The game is pretty long too, but I guess there's not much reason to replay it immediately.

Are there other new features they added that I should know about?

See the list, but yeah :D

EDIT: Woah, you guys post too fast. Anyways, I hadn't said how great and improved this game is yet. It so is :D

Yeah, that assassination mission was really annoying, especially since the thief does nothing once he points out the target to you. I'm still pissed at the final assassination mission because of the key you can lift from the decoy. WHAT DOES IT DO?!?

Throwing knives make those guys a joke. 1 gets you auto money, and the second kills if you so desire.

It takes away from the physical fun though. I love tackling him first, then depending on my mood I might or might not stick the pointy end into him as well. :lol

I'm playing the Palazzo Medici bonus mission and I just jumped off a chandelier, assassinated a guy in mid air who was jumping towards me, and rode his body safely to the ground.

I prefer killing those guys up close and personal. Thrill of the chase type thing.

I do throw knives at guards who get scared and run away, though. I did that in AC1, too. :p

Holy fucking shit, I was involved in a massive fight with just me against about 10 guys. In the middle of it all I randomly threw a smoke bomb and proceeded to poison-stab a bunch of them. I then systematically normal-stabbed all the ones that were left. They were all either dead or poison-crazy before the smoke even cleared. This game is amazing.

On one of the assassination missions, I decided that the last target was going to get poisoned. I walked away before the effects took place but stayed in the area to see what would happen. All of a sudden, nearly everyone in the general vicinity started to gather around the guy while he spazzed out. After that, two guard patrols showed up and decided to watch as well as he was going through his final death throes. It was at that point that I realized that this game was really special. :lol :lol :lol

I thought AC1 was a mediocre game. Maybe a 7/10 or so.

AC2 is an excellent game, easily a 9/10, and it improves on the original in every single way possible. Combat is much better. Stealth is less annoying. The new notoriety system makes moving through the city less miserable than the first game, and if you do get into combat, you won't mind.

The main story is much more interesting and the missions in the main story are as well. The side missions also tend to be more fun. The cities are more varied and the level design is very fun. The game looks much better visually. The achievements/trophies are more fun.

The equipment system / villa unlocks are excellent. The Assassins Tombs are the AC equivalent of those side stages in Super Mario Sunshine that were awesome, only this time the main game is awesome too.

To anyone who has any hesitation about this game because of literally anything that was wrong with the first, go buy the game. Every problem you could have had with the first game is improved or solved entirely here. It is unquestionably a better game.

The only "negative" I'd say is that Desmond's story (and Kristen Bell's character) are less important in this game. Basically, where AC1 took you out of Altair's world after every memory, AC2 does not. In some respects, this is a good thing--you don't have to exit the Animus and then exit to the Main Menu to exit the game. You're not stuck repeating the same useless walk from the Animus to Desmond's room. Still, I guess I kinda miss that particular segment. You can see how this minor downside is quite a bit less significant than the numerous major imporvements made.

Just beat the game and loved it but I have a question about the end.

there is some talk near the end about the 1st civilization and temples which makes me believe that the next game might take place in Egypt? am I way off base here?

WTF! I don't get any more trophies. I am at DNA 7. But i did not get trophies for DNA 6 and the following chapter. Nor did i earn a trophy for the two paintings nor the assasination of the Borgia courier. Really strange behaviour. Anybody with the same problem?

Considering the jumping mechanics make me want to break the game in half 50% of the time, I'm quite okay using throwing knives.

It's heavily implied that
the ancient temples across all civilizations had their involvement, so we could be going anywhere in the next game. Egypt isn't a horrible guess (one of the original Assassins was an Egyptian that killed Cleopatra, after all), but it's far from being a lock.

Can the save games be transferred?
I've started playing a bit while at home on my brother's PS3, and would like to keep that progress. I seem to remember someone saying it wasn't possible.

(PS3 version, of course)

Good. Feared I might have accidentally screwed myself over somehow. Thought I was supposed to help him at first, but then he started to taunt me and then he died.

Most of the imagery projected on the wall seemed Egyptian to me. Combine that with the quote from ubi that it will be quite clear where the next game is going by the end of AC2, and that's my conclusion too... but would they be able to craft the same type of experience set in ancient Egypt?

Can i get some help on an assassination quest?

I'm doing the quest where you have to kill the guy under the bridge-esqe thing and you can't be seen. I've tried sending the hookers in, no dice. I thought i could maybe range kill him with the throwing knives but no dice. I'm kinda out of idea.

Is this the assassination with guards on both sides of the bridge and the guy in the middle? I just threw some money on the ground, the first 4 guards were distracted walked up to guy, stabbed him.

i think i tried that but everytime i get close to them they automatically recognize me for some reason. I'll have to try it again and maybe work with it. I wasn't notorious with them that i know of.

Also i'm in the Auditore tomb and the amount of famous people are getting a little ridiculous. Marco polo? And the assassin is Dante Aligheri? Its like they just mishmashed all the famous italians back then together.

Probably a stupid question, but how can kill someone by jumping down on them and stabbing them with my little wrist knife? Like one fluid motion. Whenever I try I land near them then I have too attack

I'm only about 4 hrs in but this game is amazing.

Btw, the neogaf iPhone app Is fantastic.

Lock on to them, and just press X/Square when you're close to the edge.

The move's not available to you right at the beginning though, I've forgotten which sequence it is, but I think you get it at the same time as your second Hidden Blade. Game makes you go through a tutorial for this aerial assassination, assassination from ledges, and hiding spots while Leonardo's busy making it.

Beat the game earlier today, took me ~31 hours according to the in-game clock which is so wrong, I'm sure of it. GOTY 2009, barely surpassing Uncharted 2 and Batman. Amazing job, ACII team, now add more cool armor/weapons and find a way to put the villa in ACIII. :D Oh, right, and the feathers were perfect, 100 throughout the entire world is much better than 100 flags per region. I'd never do the latter, but was able to do the former.

I'd say about 60%. Make sure to knock a guy off, though; you don't get another mission in the flying machine to have that opportunity.

The most efficient thing to do is to run into them so they drop their banjo thingie and run off because you're a big meanie who runs into them. Gets rid of them quickly while netting you zero notoriety.

WOW! I just finished the game and shit, this was an amazing game.

Only question is... is there anything at the end of the credits?
I got up to where Lucy tells Desmond he should go back into the Animus to find more things (after the talk about the end of the world), but then I accidentally pressed something which skipped the rest of the credits. :(

just got to Venice and did a couple of things. this game is so good.

i've been going through all the side mission things though, except for the races. fuck the races. ugh.

beat-up events and assassination contracts though..man..so good.

there's just one assassination contract that I can't for the life of me get through, when you have to
assassinate four(?) soldiers without being seen. the best I've been able to do so far is get rid of two of them.
