Assassin's Creed Unity - Review Thread

It's what I said earlier, I just don't understand how we're on the 7th game in this series and the core mechanics still have the same ridiculous lack of polish that they did in the first game. It truly just boggles the mind.

Add on top of that the microtransactions and the visual issues, and this is a game that I just can't bring myself to buy on principle.

Honestly, I'm really incredibly close to selling my PS4 after this. This first year it's just been fucking worthless as a console. Comfortably the worst first-year console I've ever owned.

This was supposed to be my big fall game purchase. Oh well.

Your big game for fall was the 7th installment of a series that peaked with the second game?

Surely one of the other fall titles (like DA) interest you. Otherwise you might as well sell the console.

It's the game he was really looking forward to and wanted to buy. So what? There's nothing wrong with that.

why were you expecting assassin's creed, a multiplatform franchise (on pc even), to be the savior of your console?

Have you played shadow of mordor? I really like that game. It does have a heavy combat focus but its an excellent system and the whole nemesis system and structure with unique boss enemies is really innovative, different and cool.

I had a feeling AC Unity would let me down after playing the combat in mordor.

Wait, you banked on the Unity as a reason to keep your PS4? A third party series who's quality has been in a nose dive for 3 years? From the same publisher of Watch_Dogs?

Come on bro.

I don't believe you if you claim to be a fan of the series but the prospect didn't leave you a bit tingly.

Almost all of my favourite games have been multiplatform. Why wouldn't they be?

Come on bro.

I didn't 'bank' on Unity. I had some hope for Destiny, Driveclub, Arkham Knight and Planetside 2 (anyone else remember that this was supposed to come out in 'summer?'). One by one I watched them all be warmed over dogshit (or not actually being released at all).

Oh and ACIV was great. A return to form. So there's that too.

Unless this is a 'lol you expected Assassins Creed to be good' post, in which case, yeah I did? I've enjoyed most of the previous games in the series.

My PS4 has been a paperweight this year, between the delays and the disappointing releases. Dragon Age is pretty much the only thing I'm interested in between now and god knows when.

Any prospect of me getting excited was thrown away when I played AC3 and saw how Ubisoft treated Desmonds arc (along with the quality of the game itself).

How is copying notre dame impressive? They copied source material into the game, which is their job. They took photos to use for textures, and copied the geometry into their engine. Great for them. Doesn't sound too difficult to me given the memory and capability of PS4 and XBox One.

If the game isnt any fun to play, for example combat being so slow and boring, so what?

I haven't played the game and don't intend to do so, so I won't judge its shortcomings and I honestly don't care much.
What I was referring to was your statement pretty much saying geometry such as Notre Dame is/was(?) modeled by the system and not ubisoft staff, which is factually wrong.

For lots of people it actually peaked last year...

well, normally multiplatform games are secondary to exclusive games and features on consoles when deciding on one to buy. so just because one multiplatform game, albeit your favorite, turns out sour, i'm not sure why you'd want to sell off the ps4 in anger. i mean, if this game was your only reason to buy a ps4...i'd say it's probably not the ps4's fault you're having such a bad first year

I'll concede. I never played it. AC3 pretty much killed the series for me because Ubisoft clearly doesn't care about story or the characters.

ACIV was probably the best in the series for me, and it was my second favourite game last year behind Grand Theft Auto V.

So yeah, there's that endorsement.

Not my only reason to own a PS4, I explained in my edit that I had initially expected this to just be another reason to own a PS4, not end up as the last hope.

And I disagree that 'normally' multiplatform games are secondary. Most of my favourite games from last generation were multiplatform. In fact the only game I can think of from last generation (off the top of my head) that I would say was among my absolute favourites was Uncharted 2.

I bought a PS4 because I thought I would have a bunch of games to play. Instead I got Alien Isolation and that's more or less it.

ACIII indeed had completely awful writing, but I thought ACIV was improved on that front too.

If the fate of your PS4 depended on this game then you are better off selling it.

well, secondary in that no matter what platform you have, you'll be able to play it (sans wii u), meaning there would have to be some sort of deciding factor in there for you to have chosen it originally

Well Ubisoft didnt create the notre dame was my point. They captured photos from the real thing, and reproduced it in the game. That doesnt sound too difficult given the capability of the PS4/XBox One meaning they have a LOT Of memory to store the textures and geometry so its not a particularly impressive achievement by itself. Its not like back in the PS2 days where there was so little memory it was difficult to model real world places, like The Getaway for example.

Given the sluggish movement of the characters in AC, I dont particularly enjoy traversal in Unity - compared with something like Sunset Overdrive where its really fun and enjoyable. No reason that AC couldn't mix things up given that its set in a computer simulation in the first place. Its getting a bit ridiculous seeing the same hay carts in every game.

Better multiplatform ports (lol ACU) and cheaper? I mean I'm really looking forward to Uncharted 4 as well, but the rest of Sony's lineup is a little meh.

The best things about that game are not in Unity, and that has been known for months so I'm not sure that tracks. The on-foot gameplay in 4 is largely just the same shit you have been doing in all the other ones with it's shallow combat, and reliance on tailing missions.

So last Assassins Creed game I played (only one I played actually) was Assassins Creed 2. Would people recommend Black Flag over Unity for PS4?

Dragon Age? GTA (if that's your thing)? I wish I was good at lists to add more but I don't know....I feel like I have too much.

Absolutely. Best in the series by a huge margin IMHO.

One of the best performing games in the series too. 1080p, beautiful, rarely dips under 30fps. Stark contrast to Unity.

What you are saying is purely and simply false, it's against everything that Ubisoft (and the women who took like a year to finish) said about how they build Notre-Dame. Or maybe you have exclusive news about how they just copied and pasted photos into their engine, and that was it ?

absolutely. way better game IMO. And it looks great, which is ironic since its cross platform vs Unity being next gen only

Reboot this franchise. Make it more personal and focused. Keep the open world but make it being open actually valuable. Keep the crap story line out of it and just tell stories of assassins the world over.

In other words, stop Ubisofting all of your games Ubisoft.

I don't understand, you say you like immersion but wouldn't the bad frame rate kill the immersion?

You can be immersed in a painting, no?

Actually now I think about it... Imagine looking at a painting, and at random intervals you are suddenly stricken with temporary blindness. Here for a second, there for 3 seconds, then again for 2 seconds...Would you say its more immersive to contemplate the painting uninterrupted, or with that jarring stop-start disability?

Any prospect of me getting excited was thrown away when I played AC3 and saw how Ubisoft treated Desmonds arc (along with the quality of the game itself).

I can't believe they quit on Desmonds arc like that. Just because they wanted to keep doing this fucking back in time shit. Just get rid of the Animus and tell those stories then! But let the original idea of this series come to its real conclusion. So shortsighted.

I am not saying they just took pictures and an automated system recreated it. There was likely a whole bunch of work involved, for example its interactive so they had to set up navigation points for where generic-AC-guy can hold onto as he slowly makes his way around.

I can totally understand it taking that long to make it work, ie a year. My point is they are just reproducing a real world location, in a system that easily has the memory to support a high quality rendering of it. Xbox one and PS4 both have enough memory for the complex geometry and can have high quality textures.

So technically its impressive in terms of work accomplished. But in terms of world design, its just copying an existing real world place. That doesnt impress me as much as games where I get to explore a completely made up world with no real world comparison. I dont enjoy traversing in Unity since navigation is slow like past AC games, unlike say Sunset Overdrive.

A lot of people worked hard on this game and ended up being let down by other elements of the game. If it took a year to reproduce that cathedral, maybe they should just get kids to make it in minecraft and shrink it down (jk I know they achieved good work. shame it was associated with the worst AC in years)

Again, this doesn't make much sense.
The more advanced these systems get, geometry in games aiming for realism will become more intricate and highly detailed, which means more attention to detail needs to be given and more work has to be done and more time has to be spent on any certain model.
Your PS2/memory analogy doesn't make any sense, as models from that era were extremely low poly and less detailed. Which in most cases means easier to create.
Not hard to understand; modeling a 7000 polygon object will be much less time consuming than modeling a more intricately detailed 70.000 poly version of the same thing.
You make it sound like modelers just take pictures of any real life thing and a program/the engine/these systems just do the rest. That's not how it works.

See post above. I am not saying its easy or quick, just that the consoles have the memory to handle high quality models and textures. There was likely a whole bunch of work involved, for example its interactive so they had to set up navigation points for where generic-AC-guy can hold onto as he slowly makes his way around.

I am just saying, there wasnt anything creative involved (ie visually - the art and architecture already exists, its not a new place that exists only in some concept artists imagination) just copying a real world place and the consoles have the capacity to handle it. The time spent making it is another matter, I can understand them taking a year on that place alone.

Shame they spent so much time on a poor game. A lot of people did a lot of work on the game, so its a shame that people who worked on parts that are unrelated to the games problems are associated with one of the lowest rated AC game in years.

Sounds like they should have made AC Rogue a crossgen game and delay Unity until things were better shape. Also I wonder if they are just going to fix some bugs with the game and be done with it, or are they also going to try and optimize the game to get the framerate up to acceptable levels.

Yeah that sounds like a better bet.

I mean its hard to imagine many people buying both games at the same launch time.

I would expect best case of a patch would be resolution or frame rate improvements and bug fixes.

The game launched already, so would they spend the time for more serious optimisation like changing the crowd system (eg perhaps it would be better to have less characters on screen, freeing up resource to let them be more different from each other AND increase performance)?

Hard to say. Reception wise, they cant be that happy right now given how long this was in development.

Also, what does this mean for sequels? Were they planning a sequel to come out next year using this engine?

I would also recommend it over Unity like others here.

Black Flag was one of the games I got for my system on launch and was pleased with my decision. Seeing the extra weather effects they were able to do with better system power especially while sailing was nice.

Plus the little details like the foliage deforming in relation to your character.

Another game I would recommend sometime unless you played it already is Shadow of Mordor. Basically a mix of AC with Arkham series style combat.

The whole nemesis system built into SoM is quite nice to the gameplay and enabled fully on PS4 / Xbone / PC.

I think I do get what you are saying, you're just using wrong analogies and made it sound like recreating Notre Dame as a true to life 3D model wasn't very impressive because PS4 and XBoxOne have so much memory. You have to realize how nonsensical such a statement is.
