My god the SimCity thread is amazing, it's like watching a car crash in slow motion, you just can't look away, even if you want to.

Who ever is spamming SimCity user review on Metacritic needs to stop.
The game is really good, stop being a big baby because the server is busy
or you cant make a giant city like you wanted to.
It was very well made and its honestly a way better rating then what these childish
morons are saying. Grow up.

"Seriously, STOP IT! Low review scores affect my ability to enjoy a game. YOU sir, are the one who needs to do the growing up here".

Yep, that's a NeoGAF.

Footy is all I use it for, but I only pay for the sports package because that's all I use. If it was me paying for it by myself, I probably wouldn't bother. Livestreams might be your saviour here.

Foxtel on 360 could be a really good thing if they lowered the prices (they just added all the actual sports channels). You still need the basic package and the sports on top of that. That's $50 and you have to pay for your own bandwidth on top of that, unless you're with Telstra. If you could buy sports on it's own, then it'd be much more reasonable.

I'm hoping with the next deal the NRL is going to really focus on starting something like the NFL and NBA online systems. If we had that i would fuck off foxtel in a heart beat as i literally only watch league on there.

I'm thinking I might get that Foxtel on Xbox. I briefly had it last year because a) Super Rugby, and b) I wanted to check it out. Now they've added real Fox channels it's kind of perfect. $50 is still a bit much when I'm trying to save money to go overseas but I reeeeally want to watch NRL. Also I have a potential business idea that would need me to have access to a bunch of sport on TV.

Plus no set up costs and no contract. Hello cancelling as soon as the season is over

I agree that right now if you're a league fan it sucks not having foxtel. If you don't have foxtel you get 1 live game a week and 2 delayed games (which are near unwatchable now, fuck delayed games full of ads). If you have fox you get those plus you get another 4 live games and 1 delayed game (which plays like a live game).

You're getting less than half of the rugby league played each week and the content you get is worse as well. Situation kinda sucks as i'd rather not have to get foxtel.

That sinking feeling you get when you buy a Surface RT to replace your broken laptop only to realize there's no google chrome...
Any tools that transfer saved passwords, history ECT to the new IE?

Just saw this whole thing. Chill dude, I'm like 90% sure Mozilla have said they're making Firefox for RT. And new IE is at least bareable. I mean it hasn't stopped me from searching for Firefox and Mozilla in the store like daily, but it's not as inherently painful as using IE was like even a year ago

Heck no. Waurn Ponds. Looking like I might be in Warrnambool next month though don't know what my schedule for when I'll be down there looks like yet.
Ah cool, keep me in the loop!

Take it back, buy another laptop.

I guess you first need to work out what you would like to do. If IT for example there are plenty of certifications you can do in your free time whereby you can get the reading/study material for free (or close to). For example if you're into sys admin stuff, you can look at redhat certification (RHCSA and RHCE), Microsoft (MCP/MCSE), Vmware (VCP/VCAP. Edit: I think VMware certs require you to do a registered course), Networking there is Cisco (CCNA/CCNP/CCIE) Juniper (JNCIA/JCNIP/JNCIE), F5 load balancing cert etc

Experience is always great to have of course but certs at the very least will help get you an interview and the ones I mentioned above are all very practical so they do teach you a lot of relevant information. But maybe it's not IT that you want to get into and something entirely different. You should be able to get a government job rather easily and once in you can usually move around departments and try different things and once you have some experience you can go out to the cut-throat private sector and command more money.

Of course all of this may require you to move and I understand that's easier said than done with a kid. Personally I would either finish your degree or go down the cert path, at a bare minimum it will motivate you and provide you with more confidence to achieve what you're after.
Yeah that IT stuff always appealed to me, I might try and do some light reading into the different areas and see what takes my fancy. Thanks!

NEXT GEN THIEF! HOLY MOTHER OF GOD I AM SO EXCITED
Yeah I'm glad they dropped the future thi4f concept.

Oh man. Lame.
I was going to say maybe Microsoft will stop being dicks about it, but god knows Apple won't so I can't see why Microsoft will be any different.

To tell the truth I don't give too much of a shit about it. But IE just isn't as great as it could be

No bookmarks bar, no plugins, no extensions, everything is gesture bullshit. I'd be less angry about it if it was a good walled garden like iOS but this is a shit walled garden and no I can't return it because the thing gobbled up its own activation key as soon as I turned it on. They avoid the court order by claiming that allowing a choice of browsers was exclusive to Intel based devices and not their tablet range or RT. Some bullshit that is.

I'm at the store right now, no dice. Harvey Norman simply will not budge. I suppose they need the money more than I do knowing their low annual sales.

Threaten to go to Fair Trading. It doesn't do what you were lead to believe it will, ie run Chrome. Activation numbers are a weak excuse.

QLD FT said:
As a consumer, the law automatically provides you with guarantees on certain goods and services. These are called consumer guarantees.

You are guaranteed that the goods you buy:

are of acceptable quality
match the description, sample or demonstration model you were shown
are fit for their intended purpose
have clear title, unless otherwise stated
do not have any undisclosed securities (money owing on them)
come with a right to undisturbed possession
will have spare parts and repairs available for a reasonable amount of time after you buy them
will have express warranties honoured.
You are guaranteed that the services you buy are:

provided with due care and skill
fit for purpose
completed within a reasonable time.
If a good or service fails to meet a guarantee, you have rights against the business you purchased them from and, in some cases, the manufacturer. They will have to provide a 'remedy' - an attempt to put right the fault, deficiency or failure.

Actually follow through on it if they don't budge: http://www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au/make-a-complaint.htm

No one deserves to be stuck with Windows RT.

Absolutely what Fred says.

Usually a threat to go to Fair Trading is enough to do it. If not, do follow through with it, it's a very simple process to do. Don't accept some salesmans excuse, speak to a manager about it, the salesman likely doesn't want to lose his commission (there might even be a spiv attached to it, making the sale even sweeter for him).

"It is not the responsibility of our store to guarantee 3rd party software is available for your device, take your complaint up with Microsoft or the supplier of the software. Returns, Refunds or Exchanges are only viable if the fault is with the device or the manufacturer, not with 3rd party software"

Then I got escorted out of the store. When I get home I'll see what I can do.

The fault is with the ambiguous nature of the substantial difference between the two operating systems, and the sales person neglecting to make this clear. Trapping you into the device before you can discover this problem is just unbelievable, I can't see how anyone could get away with doing that in this day and age. I hope you're motivated enough to follow this up.

I had it for a month at the start of the year due to a free promo they had running. If you can handle non-hd it's ok. It also uses it a bit of bandwidth if that's an issue for you.

Did you make a scene?

HOLY FUCKING SHIT!

"We'll tell you whatever you want to hear to make the sale, but when you discover some or all of it isn't true we'll tell you that it's not our responsibility".

Why do people still shop here?

Go for the jugular man. Who the fuck are they to trick you out of your money and then escort you from the store when you call them on their fraudulent actions.

Also make sure you tweet your experience (if you have Twitter), along with the name of the store and include the @HarveyNormanAU account -- companies hate that sort of publicity.

If they made you believe the Pro and RT were virtually the same except for the screen, they deserve everything they get if they won't let you return it.

Pretty sure Harvey Norman is the dinosaur sinking in the tar pit of retail.

EDIT: ^^^ No, they just never explained what RT was during the demonstration. Just the general "It runs Windows", kind like those ads that claim Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 were the same OS. Some sort of sales miscommunication?

I use my Surface RT for internet surfing and typing on Word. It works awesome. But I'm not trying to replace a laptop with it. Just use it for tablet stuff.

I wouldn't pay the extra money for HD Foxtel anyway. Maybe when I'm a billionaire. Or it's standard practice. So never

This has worked in my favour so many times. I know that had I not done this on a number of occasions, I would have been completely fucked over by some companies. The last time I bitched on twitter, I scored some free photography adventure gear totalling a bit over $400.

Same here. That you have to pay extra per month for the box and the HD channels is absolute bullshit. I'd love to see League in HD, but at this rate I don't think that's ever going to happen.

Unrelated, Tammany Hall is in stock (one left) here at Unhalfbricking Games if any board gamers are interested. $60 plus postage.

What advantages do you think it has over iPads and Android tablets?

Office. That was enough to convince me. The ability to use wired 360 controllers for games is cool too, but I've barely used that.
The touch cover is pretty rad too, but so are the extra keyboards you can get for other tabs.

Android tablets tend to have USB ports don't they?

Micro, usually. This thing is weird, on one hand it can't run .exe, on the other hand it can't run steam or and other distractions as well. It is Windows and I do love how it came with the new Office.

Some could consider it a laptop replacement and others wouldn't but I'd be using it for uni work anyway so it's like a blessing and a curse? Surface is in this weird no mans land between tablet and laptop that no other android or ios tablets can get to quite yet.

Surface RT is definitely in a weird spot at the moment. Without good app support it's going to either plateau or die.

Surface Pro on the other hand is an incredibly powerful device, as you can run anything that would run on a Windows 8 desktop PC.
