Hey rep, are you free to tell me what free games can I currently get for free from PS+? I've been enjoying lots of free games and want more free ones for free!! I love going to the SEN stores and just picking games up without having to hand over money.

Can you believe it? Free games!!

Edit: so you get a free copy for the other system when you get Guacamelee? The free keeps on keeping!

So I'm looking for a new job (not cause I'm unemployed, just cause I'm sick of my current job), and what I've discovered is this:

State government pays very well.

IT is in a bit of a slowdown at the moment. Maybe government departments haven't gotten wind of that yet.

It is? Still plenty of jobs going around on Seek and Linkedin. edit: though now that you mentioned it, our department has downsized from about 130 IT staff to about 110 in the last 12 months but I think that was due more to student numbers flattening out.

Also that now makes Campbell a visionary, he did the right thing by the Qld public service :p

Really? There seem to be more people that have no idea about technology than ever, especially with such widespread adoption of smart phones and tablets.

What sort of past data are you comparing that to? "Slowdown" doesn't mean "zero jobs".

"How can Greece be in a recession? I eat tonnes of Greek yoghurt!"

Which state government? :p

Totally anecdotal and relevant to my career only, but I still seem to get as many job offers now and find the same amount of jobs in my regular searches as I did a year or two ago.

So my laptop battery is kaput. I already have a netbook and a tablet I use dor all my mobile stuff so I think it's time I finally got a destop again. Haven't bought one in so long I don't really know where to start though. I looked at the 2013PC thread over on gaming, been looking at the Aussie sites, is it utterly stupid to just buy one of the premade builds places like PC Case gear have?

Are you in State Government and thinking twice about getting out, or looking to get in?

I'm in the private sector, working for a multinational IT Services company.

I did a degree focusing on networking, I have my CCNA. I'm in the networking team at this company. Except...I'm in network compliance. It's so boring. I was told when I came into this role I'd be out in a year and becoming a networking SME (wanky IT term for level 2/3 support dudes (wait, do other companies use that term or is it just mine?)) yet I've been in the role for over 18 months with no end in sight, and it's just so boring. They could basically hire an intern to do the work I do. I'm not learning anything that would really applicable outside and it's just wasting time where I should be getting experience doing hands on network support stuff. I know I'm good at what I do because I got a great review and my manager loves me, but it's all so easy anyway so I'm not sure what that means.

And due to some circumstances at work, the chance of moving up in the next year seems slim. So basically now I'm just checking Seek every day and applying for whatever takes my fancy. The problem is I've got a degree and over three years experience working for a large IT company, but no real transferrable experience. So I look at a level 2 network support role, and I know I could do it, but it's asking for 2 years support experience. I've got two years experience of supporting the support guys. I know that stuff is just the crap recruiters put into ads, but I've applied for about 11 jobs now and only got two callbacks (to be fair, I applied for a couple that were probably above me).

So now I'm expanding my search away from networking into more generalist IT stuff, hoping that my varied experience so far (in just over three years I've been a Sys Admin, a Business Operations guy and now a 'Networking Specialist' who doesn't actually do any networking) will serve me well. The State government job I applied for was a more generalist IT support role so we'll see what happens there.

Save me x3n.

I could start going for my CCNP but at this point it seems useless because if I'm not applying the knowledge I'll forget it anyway.

Fair enough. Many contractors are reporting that it's more difficult to find work or that they have to drop their rates. Consultants are reporting a lot of companies are delaying decisions on big projects. The bosses at my fairly small company here are fairly candid and are reporting the same, and that they're hearing the same from competitors. Anecdotally we've had one redundancy here and my wife's (much much larger) company is going through a wave of redundancies as things get outsourced to the Philippines. Have a look at Whirlpool too, there are a few threads with plenty of sweet anecdotal evidence.

SME may also refer in Legend's circumstance to Subject Matter Expert, given the way he described the level 2/3 roles.

If I could figure out why the fuck I'm getting a "[Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Neither DSN nor SERVER keyword supplied", my day would've turned out a LOT better. Ugh. (Yes, I am supplying a SERVER keyword, and the code worked previously, but I just can't see what's wrong with it today after changing some other parts around the code that's not working.)

Edit: I knew having a whinge it wasn't working would result in me fixing it, as usual... There was a hidden character somewhere I couldn't see. That's what I get for trusting my own data...

I was aware that there were big issues around the world especially due to economic conditions but was under the impression (obviously wrongly) that Australia was doing pretty good, mind you I have only really paid attention to the unemployment rate (which has just had a slump that I read about today). In my small world things have been in relatively unaffected by these global issues (I guess that makes me lucky), my gf's company keeps turning over record profits (Technology One) so it gave me the impression that everything is fine and dandy, the more you know. The outsourcing is definitely an issue, what kind of work are you seeing getting outsourced, still only level 1 type jobs (e.g. tech/phone support) or has that increased in scope to higher level positions?

You can have my job when I move on (planning on leaving late this year, early next), jokes aside, I do sometimes get asked about staff, but generally it's about local positions, so you would have to move to Brisbane if something came up. Personally (but I am not you), I would persevere with IBM a bit more, especially if you're interested in working oversea's, I certainly wouldn't look at trying to move into the government at the moment, I have a feeling TA will do what CN did in Qld.

Yeah, in this context SME = subject matter expert. Seems dumb they decided to use an acronym that's already well known for meaning something else.

Stackboy, as per Arnie's avatar quote, I'm in Sydney.

For my wife's company, it was developers, testers, BAs, and PMs. So yeah, more than just your level 1 phone monkey.

Guarantee that has to be something wrong with the connection string... right? :S

Edit: You fixed it already :(

How much you want to spend, what do you want it to do?

HOLY SHIT just noticed that an update of Chrome now has the hoverover expand text on the right hand side if the link you are hovering over is near the bottom of your page and the hoverover expand text would go over the top of your link/cursor

I don't care how much I spend, as long as I get decent value and don't buy too much shit I don't need. What I want it to do is play all the games :)

You know, despite only having a (very) small number of games for the Vita, I'm struggling to find a reason to regret my purchase. Wipeout and Lumines have me by the scruff of the neck and PSN+ just keeps on giving. Honestly, the only thing I don't like about it is the shitty memory card system. Everything else they've done surprisingly well.

I'm tempted to pick up Guacamelee (seriously, best name ever) but my handheld space is currently occupied by ScummVM and Full Throttle (and then, Monkey Island 1+2, with a bit of Jones in the Fast Lane sprinkled throughout) so I can't really justify it.

But PSN+ discounts are generally only ever ~10% or free, yes? I should just grab it now, save the hassle.

I think hamchan bought one of those prebuilt PC Case Gear boxes, so if it's stupid, you're in good company. I don't think you pay that much of a premium for them. Building yourself gives you the knowledge and confidence to troubleshoot hardware problems though. Up to you.

I have the skills to stick the parts together, I just don't have any idea about buying compatible parts these days, motherboards, processors etc. It's more so I don't buy something that won't work together.

Pretty much a i5 with a 670 or 680 will tide you over for 4 or so years I would expect, hey Fred?

Cool. How much ram and what type is going to run well with that? Do I want/need a ssd for the OS? PSU, how much is enough these days? 600, 700?

Edit: I haven't bought a desktop since... 2000? I really have not kept up to date, I'm like a total n00b :(

I'd just take their builds and see if you can find the parts cheaper then. Or check out that building PC thread in the gaming section for some good builds.

I did get a pre-built from PCCG, a gtx670, i5-3570k, asrock z77 extreme 4 motherboard. Very happy with it, haven't had any problems with it 8 months in. Can run nearly every game at 60fps Ultra @ 1080p. Haven't tested Crysis 3 yet and I probably won't ever since it looks mad boring.

The premium wasn't very much either. I don't remember the specific number, I just remember being impressed that they weren't charging very much at all over the parts price.

I think it would only be $50 to put it together.

Just need to couple a CPU with a motherboard. Won't need anything flash.
PSU depends on what GPU you will run, 750 would be the max you need. I use a 600 with an i5 2500k and 460GTX.
I would buy a SSD, getting really cheap now. I'll post up some bargains soon, cheap overseas.
RAM is still stupid cheap. Just grab 8GB kit. Well under $100. Speed really doesn't matter for gaming.

GPU is the decision point.

What monitor do you use or will want to use? The higher the resolution the stronger PC you will need.

Cool. Has anyone used Techbuy for parts or systems, I like that I can customise their premade builds so I can get a less EXXXXTREME case.

I also started working on my new PC build from PCCG. My current gaming PC is still midend and can still play everything out there, but for boring reasons I decided I needed another. The goal is a mid-high end PC, relatively cheap because I'll want to upgrade next year or so once next-gen gets going stronger, but something better than my current PC.

So far the build is:
CPU - $215 - i5 3570
Mobo- $85 - ASUS P8H77-M Motherboard
RAM - $75 - G.Skill Ares F3-1600C9D
GPU - $409 - GTX 670
PSU - $100 - Antec High Current Gamer 520W Modular HCG-520M
Case- $75 - BitFenix Shinobi Black Case

HDD - can recycle form current pc
Opt - I'm sure I have one somewhere. Will use it to install W7 then never use it again.

So that's roughly a grand right there. Still need to factor in OS, a monitor (My mother just replaced her 26" tv so I might just use that?) and some cheapo peripherals. And it's funny, in one of the last PCvsPS4 carnival of stupid threads, one of the mods was making fun of a guy who said OS should be included in the cost of PC builds by saying that "you also need to factor in the desk, the chair, the electricity, the house"... when I totally also have to factor in buying a desk and chair at some point :(

The PC build itself is pretty much right from the neogaf PC 2013 thread with a minor change in GPU and PSU. I'd appreciate suggestions and all that if y'all want.

I'll probably order the parts sometime within the next week.

Thanks. I haven't even though about a monitor yet. I was going to go look at some in person next week since I have no idea what thespecs mean in terms of how they look, other than res.

Edit: Umart looks like they have a pretty decent custom design page too

Edit2: Kritz, that case looks like exactly what i want, nice and simple.

Edit again:

So, is this everything I would need for the box, OS/peripherals not included?

Put an optical drive in there, they're cheap. Also, get the K version of the CPU so you can overclock it when some mad PS4 emulator comes out that needs like 5GHz.
