Man, the CG in Patlabor makes me sad, even though it looks pretty great. I think my feelings are unreasonable, but I guess theres some undying nostalgia in the rhythmic movements of the original animated patlabors. Ah well, more Patlabor is always a good thing anyway.

I actually really dug the CG in Knights of Sidonia. Having most of the cast be clones ended up helping out plus the cold, antiseptic feel that CG has really fit the setting.

I don't have anything against CG strictly, it's definitely been done well a number of times in the past half decade or so. In something like kuromukuro I forget that it's cg after the first episode or so. But, sometimes, it feels lacking in scale or oomph. Maybe it's because the motions feel unnaturally fast, and you expect something large to move slowly (which is a misconception I suppose). I guess I have to go back and catch up on kuro now then.

The Great Passage Episode 1:

Yea, not going to lie here, I am not really all that fired up about this series yet and now that this is actually released I will say that I thought 3 Lion had the best overall episode, tonal shifts aside. Anyway, my review of, well, everything would be solid but unspectacular. I do enjoy the offbeat premise and trying to ignite the fires of passion for the mundane. I just think they wholly oversold the prose and literary aspect. Perhaps they had to do that given what the core is focused on here but it just gives way to pure pretentiousness. I suppose saying that every dictionary is a unique little snowflake is actually correct down at the the details and flourishes but it ignores the workman primary focus of a dictionary. Likewise the case is likable but not too memorable at this point in time but I do like how grounded everything is.

Gi(a)rlish Number Episode 2:

Yea, the Shirobako influences are really being worn on the sleeve now, in fact, I think I saw this plotline in Shriobako. Also, not nearly as cynical as perhaps the first episode was tilting, as we still got talk of passion and everybody seems to actually give a shit about the job. Going with the perspective of the voice actors was a smart move as it helps retain a fresh perspective.

Well this was a fun and exciting ride. Only started watching this last week and i already finished it... And now i'm bummed that i there is no more to watch, especially when it got really exciting in the tournament.
Was not really a fan of sport show, so i started to watching this shows kinda reluctantly, and while i liked the first few episodes of S1, i initially didn't really get that same feeling of hype that i usually get from shounen action shows with scifi, fantasy or supernatural themes, since i was never really a fan of volleyball, or cared about it at all, also the show has a far more simple theme , of a school team wanting to win and qualify for the nationals, instead of grand themes where the fate of the world is at stake or something else. But i actually really started to appreciate the much simple themes later in the show, and it was actually kinda refreshing , since it also managed to avoid much of the stupid tropes and power levels nonsense you get with other shounen show. And S2 was even better , with the addition of the new manager , and the away training segment , which i really enjoyed and latter the spring tournament, yeah it was great!

Wasn't this show about a fujoshi that would rather ship the member her harem with each other instead of herself?? Because this was straight up a reverse harem. And not even particularly funny.

Has there ever really been a fruitful discussion in the off topic about the condition of anime?
Off Topic threads in general just invite people who have no interest or experience with whatever the topic is to act like their opinion is fact, it's just worse with anime threads because it's doubly obvious how dense and clueless they are.

All it ever takes is one ignorant individual who's eager to keep posting and the discussions start going nowhere. Usually there's several of those.

And when the threads get many pages long and fewer and fewer people bother reading all that, you'll end up with a constant stream of re-stated arguments and you wonder what's the point even anymore.

Naruto 699 END*

Far removed from the quality of last three episodes but still better then manga ending as they get to expand a bit on some stuff. Gotta admit that a few scenes still made me choke up, that epilogue was a stylish and unexpected way to put things to an end, all the while reminding you of the way it has begun.

It's been a journey for sure, no matter the lows you've descended to, you will always have special place in my heart Naruto.

Just finished my work in Glasgow way too early and now I'm in the city lonely, not sure what do now until Kizu.

Though I see here a bunch of people in anime cosplay. Glasgow loved anime or something.

Isn't that every thread in off-topic ever? :p

The Great Passage 1 - Excellent. Most mature show since Rakugo. Definitely watching all of this. Expect both will be in my top 5 at the end of the year based on the vibes from episode 1.

Why stop at Off Topic? Why stop at GAF? Why stop at the internet? The reality is that every debate in existence on any topic will exhaust all value and fall into a circular pattern if it goes on long enough with the same people. That doesn't make participating in discussions pointless, because you learn from exchanges of ideas, you just need to know when to disengage when there is no more value for yourself. That's how I see it. There is no winning or losing end game, you just invest as much time and effort into it as you care to.

To Be Hero 2

Like Muromi-san, I expect this to have some nicely animated bits and humor that aggravates me half the time.

Oh Muromi-san is definitely a good comparison. I do believe, however, that the comedy got a little better in this second episode. I felt the first dragged out jokes for far too long, but here, even if the jokes were kinda bleh at times, they were relatively contained and easier to get over since they lasted a much shorter amount of time.

I can certainly understand the appeal for certain people. I'm sure someone like Cindi Mayweather would love a show that is so cynical and disparaging of the light novel and anime industry, to judge from that OT thread.

I dunno. After talking with some of the people in that thread for most of the afternoon/night, I don't think they really want anything, save to be right. I got the impression by the end it was really about them being right that anime is basically all cancerous now and there was no argument to be had. I agreed that Fan service is a problem, but they weren't even willing to argue/discuss the severity of it.

And when they began comparing Keijo advertisement on Crunchyroll to advertising Porn in theaters, I knew there wasn't really any discussion to be had, not with a false equivalency mindset like that. But, I tried, gave people a recommended list that I'm sure no one used, and generally tried to provide my POV about the state of seasonal anime.

I actually really dug the CG in Knights of Sidonia. Having most of the cast be clones ended up helping out plus the cold, antiseptic feel that CG has really fit the setting.

I really like Knights of Sidonia's visuals, and by proxy Ajin's, since it's the same studio. I know most people don't like their work, but after Berserk 2016 I have even greater appreciation for the strides they're making.

I generally agree. I did get some value from that thread at least. I basically came away understanding that there are jilted anime fans who've written off the medium, have an extreme issue with fan service, ready to equate it to porn, and aren't generally interested in watching new anime, not until the fan service issue is dead and buried. Which, at this rate, will probably be never.

It does make me wonder the sizes of each of these camps. Like, how many potential viewers is the medium losing to fan service, rather than say, outright disinterest for animation in general? A lot of people want to believe that if fan service was dropped the market would magically expand (and maybe it would with the right advertising) but even if those people could be convinced that anime has changed and flock back to the medium would they make up for a drop in the Otaku pandered crowd who the fan service is selling to in the first place? I'm not of a terribly conservative mindset, but I can see how a conservative industry in conservative country would be afraid to take such a massive leap of faith.

Has that thread reached Godwin's Law yet? That's when you know it's a real argument.

Yeah, I liked the visuals in Knights of Sidonia as well. The human CG did feel somewhat artificial, but I think that worked in its favor, because of its setting and atmosphere. And the mech-action was amazing. But then again I'm also inherently biased towards everything Nihei, so there's that.
I didn't really like it in Ajin though. The Ajin themself look great again, but all humans look butt-ugly most of the time.

And just because I can, here are a few anime with great use of CG:
Majin Bone
Danball Senki
Girls und Panzer
Show By Rock
And they are otherwise great as well :p

The Great Passage - 01

So, this might just be this season's Rakugo? 2 Rakugo's in the same year?

qsUTh7k.png

Anime got me interested in Karuta, space garbagemen and Rakugo. Time to take another step with making dictionaries I suppose!

Gotta say though that the educational and cutesy eyecatch felt out of place.

Sidonia sure had great action scenes which are pretty unique in anime series. Reminded me more on Western Sci stuff like Battlestar.

I wish more mecha series with CG action scenes would go that route instead of trying to replicate traditional action.

Lostorage incited WIXOSS 02

This story is actually more insidious than the other one. The other series the other card girls are just tricking the Selector so that they can switch places with them eventually. However in this the card girls are made from the memories of the selectors and thus are able to use the selector's own weaknesses against them as a means to spurring them onto fight. Not to mention they take on the mannerisms and vague appearance of the person most important to the selector. Fucking memory eating parasites. The feeling of this show is actually even more depressing too because the other shit happening to Chi is just real life shit people go through. Failing school, money worries, job loss, no friends, potential homelessness. ED is fantastic but man is it depressing too.

Finally got some serviceable wi-fi courtesy of public hotspots, so... short review time!

Flip Flappers #1
Every now and then I like watching some shows that are more about crazy stuff happening than complex character interactions, and Flip Flappers definitely fits the bill there. Loved the color changes, and the animation wasn't half bad (I'm looking at you, Digimon Tri...).

Magical Girl Raising Project #1
A boy turning into a magical girl did kind of come from the left field, but other than that it's still an average post-Madoka magical girl subversion show. Wonder how long it takes for our wide-eyed idealist MC to go from Madoka to Homura mode.

Girlish Number #1
The girl's veiled reactions were all quite entertaining, at the very least. It isn't a must-watch, but still is a fairly entertaining and serviceable snarky show.

Will probably post some more when I get the chance later.

Dictionaries are serious business #1

I don't know, I just use google.

I dunno, this felt a bit too heavy-handled at times. (Pic related)

What's with the animation? The character movements look weirdly.... hypnotic...

Classicaloid Ep 2

So we start the kids show in a pool with a boob size joke? It's also clear that the big Musik moments in the latter half of the episode are being paid for by simply not animating the front half if at all possible. The housemates are still intensely irritating with childhood 'friend' still leading the pack in annoying power. The Musik scene was still fun (why the bontempi class synths though?) but I reckon I'll just skip to the end for that from now on because while I actually like Kanae every other character has been nails on a chalkboard for me so far.

Thunderbolt Fantasy
It's really remarkable how well constructed this narrative. The characters are defined with distinct personalities, but at any given time you can begin to question where they come from and what their motives really are. By late in the game you just have loads of moving pieces and it feels like there are a number of reasonable possible outcomes that would make sense. And in the end almost every single character feels like they get an exciting conclusion that fits well. So impressed, and I can't wait for more of this.

Kuromukuro - Episode 22

I like how at this point when the show is revealing everything, it turns out that certain assumptions I made earlier in the show aren't really accurate. For a series that is pretty tropey, I think that the narrative and setting is surprisingly layered. It doesn't really do anything particularly shocking or surprising, but the hows and whys, and things that do happen, tend to not end up as predictable as they seem. I feel really bad for a lot of the characters now. :(

Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters 3:

Another enjoyable episode. The AR Field this time being an RPG was nice, and it felt really unique in terms of the design. It was definitely a lot better than last weeks. I felt pretty bad for Roleplaymon in the end, and a lot of the stuff that happened in the episode was pretty funny. The idea of people's phone calls getting turned into NPC conversations from RPGs was pretty hilarious, and not really the sort of thing that I expected. Everything is remaining very fresh so far. I also thought it was nice that rather than an explosive fight at the end, Haru managed to just connect to Roleplaymon on an emotional level and avoid the whole fighting business altogether. That helped at keeping it from feeling like we're just getting the same basic story every episode.

The introduction of Rei at the end of the episode promises some bigger events happening soon, and the preview for next week looks incredible. It could easily be the best episode yet. I'm still a bit curious as to when we're going to get the other two protagonists showing up, since they weren't in the preview for next week either. They could always show up later in the episode, although at this point I guess it might be at least Episode 5 before they really appear. It's kind of a curious set up, but so far I feel like this show has been doing most things right.

Hibike Euphonium! 2nd season 2

Kyoani find a way with this pool episode. Thanks kyoani.

Now i understand why Asuka senpai won't let Nozomi join the band. She's a good player, and probably qualified to be part of the competition team, but then we see Yoroizuka play become emotional and even to the point of being sick just from listening to Nozomi playing. So yeah, since Asuka is the vice president, she probably know the whole situation, hence why she won't allow Nozomi to join. Or she probably pissed at her for making the situation worse. I don't know.

But then again, Nozomi is a victim of seniority, her being frustated and quit was also understandable. Though i still think that letting her join the band will only add problems.

Note: Playing rhythm game without any sound is seriously weird.

Did they ever make it clear how time passes in Sound Universe relative to Earth? Cause if I were Cyan I'd probably be worried about fucking over my Earth bandmates and just leaving without writing that new song. Not that she left them by choice?
