BAD YEAR

It seems pretty clear what I meant and ure just pissing in the wind. Did I shit in your coffee or what the hell is wrong with you?

"PS5 exclusives" != "Playstation first party"

Ah I see, so ure just being an idiot for no reason. No idea why but carry on I guess.

I'm not the one looking at dragon age thinking it looks good, but each to their own.

Should we really be expecting a "generational game" every year when we know how long these take to develop and how much effort has to go into them? Not trying to be a dick, genuine question here.
In the previous 2 years, I would agrue that Elden Ring, Baldurs Gate, Zelda, and GOWR all fit that criteria. There are enough great game studios nowadays that are capable of releasing 90+ metacritic games that sell over 10 million copies. Games that drive the mainstream audience

Rockstar, CD Projekt Red, Sony Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Larian, Fromsoftware, Capcom, Nintendo. Most years, one of these studios would release a game that would fit that criteria. It just didn't happen in 2024. And there are many other studios that have the potential to release high quality blockbuster games in the near future

You're not making any sense.

You either want to buy a game to play it, or you don't. Nobody buys a game just so hardware "doesn't die from dust". If you don't want or need hardware based on the games that are on the system you're better off just selling it.

I’d like to play Stellar Blade and FF7 at some point but I’m not overhyped to play it day one so I’m waiting for PC release or full compilation in FF7 case.

On the contrary I couldn’t wait to play Rise of The Ronin so I bought it on PS5.

So there’s definitely a difference here.

Holy shit without much first party they absolutely dominated the competition.

Nintendo had Echoes.

MS had...Hellblade? And Indy is coming I guess.

It's been really annoying to see people put forth this intellectually dishonest narrative that the PS5 sucks because Sony's first party studios aren't releasing more games. What matters in the big picture is having enough great games to play that a platform justifies it's value. To that end, I've never met anyone who bought a console and said "I'm only going to play first party games on this machine, and then judge its value based entirely on those games - because reasons." That's not a thing that happens. It's mental gymnastics.

Similarly, if someone looks at the list in the OP and says "There are so few games in that list that I'm interested in, I have had long stretches with no games to play on this machine", that really seems like a personal problem with their taste in gaming. Seems like their focus has narrowed so much no platform would make them happy.

My list looks very different from yours, but glad you had plenty to play. I've never had a lack of things to play this whole gen and this year was no different.

I definitely wouldn't consider this one of the strongest years in gaming by any means though. I think people will look back and realize that extremely quickly. Nintendo was basically having their weakest year for releases since the end of the Wii. Xbox had Avowed and Replaced delayed. PS 1st party is still barely present. It's going to get much better than this, pretty easily.

How is this year considered bad and not one of the best year gaming? I baffled by the narrative of there is nothing to play. Like, how? Aspecially on ps5. I cant even keep up with whats coming.

There are a lot of complaints about this generation but i dont know gaf, this gen may be mine fav in the end.

What do you guys think?
I'd like to add Granblue Fantasy Relink. It was a very enjoyable monster hunter-esque game to kick the year out with Yakuza, Persona 3 Remastered, Helldivers 2, and FF7 Rebirth. 2024 had many incredible releases, people there are complaining should probably expand their horizons when it comes to gaming genres if they think there was nothing worthy playing this year.

Chairman Yang

if he talks about books, you better damn well listen
this has been a terrible year, everything good i played is a remake or compilation nothing original. Persona 3 reloaded, Astrobot (which is basically an expansion of the vr game), Ufo 50 which is just a compilation of old games

its a narrative they built against sony
when you are the best for 30years , they extremely jelly and want you to go down
Microsoft gave up to try to create high quality games. They refuse pure sp games without any kind of coop. Instead they want to put the whole industry by their quality standard. They use era and media for that.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Pretty cool year based on that list but even cooler when you also include SMT V: Vengeance, Infinite Wealth or the absolute kino that is EDF6.
Some very cool indie titles too like Manor Lords, Selaco and Balatro.

Videogame bros? We won.

"They refuse pure sp games without any kind of coop."

All games should have multiplayer.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Hellblade, Avowed, Indy are all SP only games. Wtf are you talking about?

Yeah 3 games. Only 1 released. They have 33 fucking studios and like every xbox gamer you already put unreleased games as high quality ones.

huh ?

You said "They refuse pure sp games without any kind of coop". I showed you that pretty much all their latest projects released or releasing soon are SP focused. Games like CoD which have had MP focused modes established decade(s) ago aren't going to turn SP only but saying that they don't put out SP games is flat out wrong.

Should we also judge all of Sony's future output based on Concord?

just because you made a list doesn't mean it's a good year. You could actually make a list of every year, quantity doesn't equal quality.

a good year would have 2 absolutely incredible games and nothing else.

there are some standout titles there, but there is also nothing new or interesting, nothing that we will look back on and say "wow, that game changed things" or "wow, we'll never get another experience like that again".

gamers need to move past this idea that bigger number means better.
This is just wrong bud. Sorry. 1 big game in a year or shit is not a good year for gaming and a ton of great games(this year) without 1 huge standout(no BG3 or Elden Ring this year) is not a bad year for gaming.

This year has probably had the most "great" games in a long time that I can remember but not really any "GOAT" games and that is okay.

What makes you wrong, imho, is that the inverse of what you say cannot be true.

Are you actually claiming that a year with no other games and 1 incredible standout game of all time will make it a good year?

Maybe if you play 3 games a year, but damn. I can't imagine thinking that.

The list in the OP isn't actually like the other lists you are talking about. It's a good list. It makes a mockery of anyone saying this year was "bad" for gaming, and I don't know why you can't see and accept that.

Granblue Fantasy (OP missing this console exclusive)
Every list thread seems to omit it. Great game, with awesome gameplay. I wonder why, only extremely specific games, count to make it a supposed meh year.

A lot goalposts moving from the usual shit peddlers.

I think most complaints have been directed at Sony’s 1st party Studios.

Clearly overall this year has had a ton of good to great games available to play in many different genres regardless if one owns a console or PC.

We know why. It's warrior bullshit. Everybody is tap dancing around the issue.

It's only a bad year for weirdos who rely on 1st party releases.

Imagine owning current hardware and that's what you rely on? Lol. I'm not even describing casuals, cause they aren't on Gaf. Think about it, imagine being a Gaf user and you legit think this generation has been trash. Im sorry but it's you, not the game selection. I am drowning in current gen games.

I’m generally not as into Japanese games as Western games. I like big AAA western games. The list in OP is not a good one to me personally. I wouldn’t call it a bad year, but a down year for my tastes. Next year looks miles better.

One of my favorite years in recent memory tbh. For all the people for think it's a bad year, maybe this hobby has passed you by 🤷‍♂️

That’s a bad take. One year of having someone’s personal tastes not satisfied does not mean the industry has passed them by. 2025 looks INCREDIBLE for my tastes.

It's not even an issue of first party games or a specific PS5 issue.

There are lots of people (the dregs of 4chan and clickbait Youtubers) who insist that gaming just plain sucks now. They have this mentality where they seem to just straight up ignore new IP or anything which isn't a big budget AAA or tentpole title. I know PC gamers who repeat the mantra "gaming sucks now", yet they only buy about 3 games a year. According to SteamDB, like clockwork we always get at least 100 games a year releasing to overwhelmingly positive user reviews.

There is absolutely plenty to play, people just need to escape from their bubble of needing Big Sequel 17 to affirm their purchasing decisions.

I blame no one but PS fans themselves for creating this narrative. Totoki himself came out with the statement that they weren't releasing anything major for the rest of the year. PS fans meltdown after every single showcase they put on. Then you have Concord. I don't know if people really remember it, but for months and months we'd have a "PS sucks" thread on the front page probably every day, and they were all made by PS fans themselves having meltdowns throughout the year.

Xbox fans for the most part are barely even on here. Same with Nintendo fans. And if they made threads like that they'd be banned. Most Xbox fans this gen have been happy with the lineup while everyone else trashes it as the worst stuff ever released. Most Nintendo fans are happy this gen but barely even post on here. PC gamers have never been happier.

PS gamers are kind of miserable this gen. It's the honest truth. So if they're finally happy with their year, then fantastic. Hope they keep up the positivity.

What about Concord?

(But seriously, maybe it's because there has been some high profile bombs this year also? And lots of bad games in general. Maybe that skews peoples perception?)

Edit: also, not an amazing year if you are an Xbox fan
lol…

We had Palword for 6 months exclusivity (as I can see OP and other are listing timed exclusives), hellblade 2, Ara, Age of Mythology: Retold, great Starfield expansion, great Diablo expansion

Still to come;
CoD
Flight Sim 2024
Indiana Jones
Stalker 2
33 immortals

+ all 3rd party games that released.

I am an Xbox fan and literary struggling to find time to play and my backlog is only growing. So you don’t have to worry about Xbox fans just stop posting bullshit around.

Helldivers 2

Just to clarify;

HD2 - 2nd party (Sony owns the IP)
Rebirth - 2nd party (Sony doesn’t own the IP - timed exclusive?)
Silent Hill 2 - 2nd party (Sony doesn’t own the IP - timed exclusive?)
Rise of Ronin - 2nd party
Stellar blade - 2nd party (Sony doesn’t own the IP for this one)
Black Myth Wukong - 2nd party (timed exclusive?)

So first party is only Concord and Astrobot.

It’s like me calling Stalker 2 Xbox 1st party game … lol. If nothing going to move it seems that MS will end up with 6 proper first party releases vs 2 from Sony (1 of which is one of the biggest flops in the history of gaming). I am an Xbox fan and literary struggling to find time to play and my backlog is only growing. So you don’t have to worry about Xbox fans just stop posting bullshit around.

Yup. Completely agree.

As far as the first 4 years go, this current gen might be my fav ever. Aspecially when it comes to genre diversity since every type of game gets an absolute banger title.

Pretty decent year actually. From FP point of view I only loved ASTRO BOT and getting Zelda EOW soon. Helldivers I played a bit, but didn't purchase it myself yet. I'm getting it when new faction hits and new Players pouring in. There's something for everyone rpg, platformer, action adventure, souls like, shooter, RPG, jrpg, survival horror etc. Hardly a bad year, maybe if you rely on first party releases only.

Did I say it was a bad year? No, I said not an amazing year, if you think it has been amazing then good for you. I do have an Xbox, it's not like I haven't played some of those games, including the total disappointment that is Hellblade 2, and I won't touch the Starfield expansion because the base game bores me to death.

Edit: also, half the games you mentioned for playstation are first party, the other half are third party. If Sony are publishing it (and especially if they are funding it) then it's a first party game (Stellar Blade, Rise of Ronin and Helldivers 2 all come under that umbrella)

Admittedly, I was beginning to believe it really was a bad year based on all the rhetoric repeatedly spewed from the naysayers nonstop and then when I saw a list being presented and BTW I have not played a majority of these games save for Tekken 8...that's when I began to second guess myself, has it really been a bad year? You have ppl shouting, "CONCORD! CONCORD! CONCORD!" bc they want to take your focus away from all the good stuff. I had to take a step back and go, "man the whole time I was buying into fake news."

I'd say both ER: Shadow of the Erdtree and Metaphor: Refantazio are beyond GREAT from a kinda objective point of view.
True true. But one is DLC (which is very difficult for me to say WOW too, even though its fantastic). Metaphor, haven't played it yet, looks good. i think your avatar my bias you a bit on Metaphor thought

There is nothing OBJECTIVE about this. Its all subjective.

Most years are decent at the worst. Its only xbox that is ever straight up bad because they don't have many high quality first party games to begin with and they don't fill the gaps with anything. Look how many exclusive 3rd party titles sony got this year.

Oh, why? It's a very long DLC with lots of contents, something that could be considered a "expansion pack" if it was released a few decades ago and it's full of quality stuff.

Metaphor, haven't played it yet, looks good. i think your avatar my bias you a bit on Metaphor thought
Definetly biased lol. But still, people seem to like it quite a lot and got tons of good reviews so I guess it's as close as possible to an objective great videogame.

There is nothing OBJECTIVE about this. Its all subjective.
Agreed! That's why I put "kinda" there. I know it's all opinions, but when so many people have that same opinion you have to think that there's some objective truth there.
