Baldur's Gate III |OT| Three times as awesome

Yeah the separate movement and action points sucks a bit as a melee. If you are already standing next to the enemy, you can still hit only once every turn.
At level 4 for fighters/barbarians/paladins you get a dual attack. You can also shove as a bonus action every turn which can be fun. If you dual wield I believe your offhand attack is a bonus action (may just be rogues).

Melee characters really start to feel more useful around levels 3/4

In general the "bane" of this early access is bound to be precisely the fact that the levels between 5 and 14 are (according to most) where D&D starts getting actually fun.
The early levels are a bit of a drag and maybe a bit too much reliant on RNG, too. And imagine that the 5th edition if anything made these problems less pronounced.
It used to be worse in the past.
 
Seeing as Baldur's Gate is part of the Dungeons and Dragons stuff, does anyone know if they will be implementing some of the new... "changes" I've heard about? Things like removing negative racial stats to promote "Racial equality?"
The OP mentions "Seldarine Drow". I've never heard of those, but it sounds a lot like what would happen if someone suddenly decided to make a "good" faction of Drow so not all dark-skinned elves are evil.
But then again, they may have existed in the lore for decades for what I know.

Yeah, without spoiling too much, the characters I’ve met so far after the opening area are all dicks. Like, aside from helping during combat I don’t actually want them around, lol
They get better once you have some influence with them and the story picks up steam.

No, they are not. In the old editions there was Eilistraee, the goddess of reformed surface drow, but now apparently all drow are divided between the evil ones who follow Lolth and don't want to be genderbending "free spirits", and enlightened surfacers who embrace the gift of transgenderism from Correllon.

Why Baldur's Gate(?): I feel like this is the big question so far, and while I'm sure they want to maintain some mystery, but I guess I don't understand the choice yet. The game play while enjoyable feels too different from what I'd expect given the BG3 title. The change in party size, the way the turn based combat works, it feels too different. I'm enjoying myself, but it does leave me questioning why go the route of a sequel title then?

Larian has already made some amazing popular games, and if they wanted to go down their own Forgotten Realms story I think it's great, and I look forward to it. But why not a new title? The old designer in me is frustrated that it's named as a sequel, without any real continuation showing so far. Whether it's in story, gameplay, characters or anything. It might be there at some point, I don't know, but at this time, I haven't seen it.

The general lighthearted tone (writing, humour) and graphics are also much more Divinity than Baldur's Gate.
Also, I'm not particularly impressed by the companions so far.

Ah, this sucks. I already didn't like how unfriendly many companions of DOS 2 were and was hoping Larian would tone it down in BG3.

I hope they at least give us the chance to curse them if we want. It bothered me how many times, there wasn't a GTFO in the dialog options. It is one of my main reasons I like DOS 1 much more.

Wow, basically all of this is wrong.
The overall tone of the the game is not particularly "light-hearted" at all.

I haven't seen much, just followed a stream that barely left the ship and tried to open the door where the cleric is, but the dialogues up to that point (especially the one with the brain) had the usual Larian tone.

I kind of see what you are getting here, the "Larian tone" has alot of that soft voiced music thrown in, I don't recall there being much in older Baldur's Gates or IE games. The old BGs had alot of heroic music and dungeons were mostly dark ambience. The lack of voice acting also contributed to the mood, we used to create alot of the tone in the back of our heads, there mostly being music and some voice lines as an audial cue. It's a big shame we don't have VA like Kevin Michael Richardson or Jim Cummings to bring that old vibe.

Finally ran into some pretty annoying bugs, about 4h in. After setting up camp, for whatever reason the game thought there was some sort of endless cutscene going on and I couldn't save. Lost about 1h of progress. Oh well.

Yeahh I've pretty much started treating it like there is no autosave

I think it has the potential to be something very special if they fix the combat, expand character customisation and build options, smooth the cutscene animations (most of which are really atrocious). Larian certainly have a lot of work ahead of them on that one, but i really liked the characters, writing and the general sense of adventure, this game has "soul" as 4chan would say.

No. We have access to Act 1 which amounts to about 45h of gameplay if you do it all.
Wait, 45 hours? Yea I guess it did take me a while to do the first act on D:OS2 as well. hell I'm just on the 2nd act there. I got off that damn island and felt like I finished the damn game haha!

Yeah, and if you haven't taken a look at Wasteland 3, the update to fix loading times are going out early next week, i recommend checking that game out, it's a solid 90/100 if they fix the loading.

I did download it on Gamepass PC and went through the first mission or so. I wasn't immediately impressed, but it was my first Wasteland game so I didn't know what to expect, though it does remind me more of like XCOM or Mutant Year Zero...which I'm guessing those games as well as Gears Tactics may look to mimic.

Yeah, the combat is similar to Xcom.
The game has really good characters and story, with a bunch of quests with hard choices that gives different conclusions and rewards. Game has multiple endings as well.
I'd recommend you give another shot when the new patch comes out next week.

Loading was unacceptable but I still played it regardless. Many hours in and Wasteland's "world map" exploration gets really lame. Even played on the harder difficulties and it still gets easy quite quickly. Game is funny though - but I can't give it a 9 simply because exploration felt bland/ repetitive and unrewarding.

There's not much to explore though, map is really small, the game is all about the quests, and they are amazing, in particular Aspen and Call to Action.

Edit: Game is easy if you are a veteran of turn based combat, played on supreme jerk and only had trouble at early mid game.

No, it's not.
A different ruleset, a different progression system, a different itemization, a different art style, etc.

It DOES have some carry over from the Original SIn games, though, and that's a mixed bag. The chain/unchain system sucks, the party limit at 4 sucks, no night and day cycle sucks.
The combat is a net improvement, on the other hand.

Overall it has exceeded my expectations, the world reactivity is fantastic and some of the best I've seen in an RPG... though whether that continues past Act 1 will be the test.

I do think it falls short of the originals though, the characters and story just aren't as intriguing as what BG2 was able to do early on as an example. They've got time to fix some of that though going into the later acts so I'll keep an open mind.

It isn't a Divinity reskin like some are saying, it just has the Larian coat of pain which is perfectly fine as they were never going to emulate the Bioware games and it's better they play to their strengths.

In terms of improvement I do think they should consider not going all in on the face cam for every single NPC. I imagine trying to do it for a city that should be HUGE like Baldur's Gate will be a nightmare unless they reduce its scope which would be a shame just to include this feature. Moving the camera around is also a bit of a pain in the ass, I did hear you can change that in the options though so I'll check that out.

I love how much they include secret stuff in this game. I can't fucking wait to explore the darkest recesses of Baldur's Gate city.

I hate the concentration mechanics, my god trying to keep bless and bane during a boss fight was so annoying with him going after my cleric.
Playing this on the hardest difficulty on release is going to be a pain in the ass with the low accuracy.

There was actually one npc so far that I talked to and it didn't zoom in

Not so loosely. The adaptation is pretty tight.
BG 1 and 2 took way more liberties with AD&D than BG3 with 5E (which led to some issues occasionally, like "bows on everyone" being a ridiculously overpowered strategy and summons being the ultimate cheese tactic/meat shield even against the final boss in BG1).

It's only the first act (around 20-30h).

No official date for full release. "At least 1 year" I think they said about the EA duration

I know it is E.A but making a game they lacks a bunch of features that where in a game from 2000 is lack luster. Come on no night day cycle, only 4 party members and after act 1 you are stuck with them and no Interaction between PC, NPC and party members. It is Baldur`s Gate game please stay more true to the origins of the series. If not why even bother calling it baldur's Gate in the first place.
