Watched this tonight. I'm on a bit of a horror movie kick lately, and saying that as someone who's never been much into the genre and appreciating them lately - this was interesting, built up a decent head of steam, then a bunch of dumb shit at the end just went into "destroyed suspension of disbelief" territory for me. Which is a shame, because had they written the end of this differently I suppose it would have been a lot more satisfying (for me, anyway) but looking at all the people who are celebrating it, maybe I'm just being old man about it.

I liked it, especially that douche guy when he started measuring the cave I had to laugh.

Some issues though:
- Bullshit the police wouldn't listen, she could've called in a murder or something and they would investigate.
- The woman would come out every night , like the hobo said. But how did she get out before the wall / window was smashed?
- Why did the woman have super strength.

This is a well made and enjoyable movie (which is a shocking thing to say about the director of Miss March), but the portrayal of police in this one left a bad taste in my mouth. It reminded me of the terrible Candyman reboot in that regard, and makes me think the director was just trying to please the Twitter crowd.

Just saw this last night, while some of the tunnel scenes were actually pretty tense and chilling, I feel like the rest of the movie falls flat. The ending was even more uhhhhhhhhhhh that's it?

Incest grandchildren always have the strength of 20 men, duh.

Add this one to the ever-growing list of horror movies with a creature that’s nothing more than a tall pale woman with long fingers and saggy tits.

Also love how the homeless dude spends 10 minutes setting up what we anticipate will be an insane finale and then it just ends.

It starts off strong, but really takes a nosedive after the first 30 minutes.

What a weird movie this was. Part horror, part thriller, part comedy, and none of it really worked (although the first 30mins 'thriller' part was quite good.

By the end i almost hated the movie, it fact it sucked imo.

"Woke undertones?" If you feel like "rape is bad" falls into woke territory, what do you feel is normal discourse?

lolwtf
I'd assume this referred more to the incompetence of the police and the corruption of Hollywood elite.

Have you ever called the police? The one time I did they literally acted exactly like those cops. Not pretending that someone is a superhero because they're a cop is also not "woke" discourse. Police not giving a shit about poor neighborhoods is a real thing, so if realistic representation of a job is "woke," then what does woke mean? Real?

Saw the movie last night. Didn’t know to much going in, and I thought it was great. Subverted my expectations often, which was good. Sure you can pick it apart. I like that they don’t explain too much about why or what. Cops really pissed me off though. All the actors did a great job. Long normally annoys me, but he fits in well here. Not trying to spoil, but I hope there is no sequel. It’s good as just a stand alone thing.

Seriously, people claiming that the film says “men = bad” are being ridiculous given:

Bill Skarsgard is totally innocent. And he’s the one the movie was occasionally trying to dupe us into mistrusting from the get go.

Which is great misdirection as when Justin Long is introduced, the movie doesn’t take very long to reveal he’s a piece of shit, but then much later it seems like he might be heading towards a redemption. Since many of us already misjudged Bill, we are more easily duped into thinking Justin could change as well. And then the film shows when shit actually gets real, nope, he’s ultimately only looking out for himself.

Your last sentence in your spoiler is where I actually laughed out loud. This movie was so dumb that it makes Halloween Ends look good. Eh, not really. Both were crap.

WTF this movie sucks. How the hell does it have critical acclaim? The plot of nothing special (same as countless other horror movies, namely
inbred deformed hicks
, the scares aren't scary really, the characters do stupid things and the ending is unsatisfying.

It feels there hasn't been any good horror movie in like 5 years, with even those which had critical acclaim usually suck only.

Thought it was okay, if somewhat forgettable.

It has the same problem a lot of modern horror movies have in that they're just a bunch of ideas, scenes and styles lifted from other orignal works and patched together. This one did it quite well, but I couldn't escape the feeling throughout that i'd seen it all done before and better elsewhere.

Here's a short horror film with some of the same creatives behind it:

There have been plenty of great horror movies in the past 5 years unless you're one of those stuck on the 80's slasher fans.

I couldn’t stop laughing when Justin Long started measuring everything. That was fantastic.

I liked that the movie actually made strides to justify why he would prioritize profiting over the situation versus getting the hell out of here. Given his financial future looked grim, I could believe that he would ignore the red flags and just think about how much money he could make from the place.

I liked it though it does kinda phone in the ending. Def more of a 70's "this is fuuuucked up" vibe than a true slasher one.

All the characters had decent motivations for their actions, no one did anything tooooo extreme given the genre, and the first third, just wow, built the momentum to carry it.

Took a break from Run, Sweetheart, Run to watch this before my HBO sub expires and damn, these two leads could be sisters. I guess mixed race girls are the new scream queen blondes :p

If this was the only horror movie I saw this year, it still wouldn’t be the best horror movie of the year.

It was awful. Just awful. I look at the directors previous work and it falls in line with that garbage.
I need you to say that happier and with your mouth open.

Laughed a lot with some scenes, not gonna lie

As usual with 90% of horror movies, it shit the bed during the finale. 1st half was great.

I'm not a woke hunting aficionado as some of you here, but the cops representation was ... yeah. More than unbelievable.

I kept waiting for like more of a 'smart' twist or reveal and by the end I was like well I guess there's nothing coming.

Ain't no 65 year old incest grandma overpowering anybody.

So who was taking care
of the dad in the bed? He clearly couldn't do shit for himself and just suicided at the first opportunity. So why was the daughter afraid to go there? I'm guessing sequel bait of other kids or some other menace down there

This film is absolutely the product of someone too scared to commit properly to the set up, and instead veers off into comedy, because the alternative was too gruesome or scary to go with.

They started off trying to be John Carpenter, fell back on Sam Raimi when things got too difficult, and wrapped it up in some trite social messaging.

How very disappointing.

Carpenter would have had the balls to keep it serious.

FunkMiller FunkMiller you are not wrong. Imagine if young Wes Craven had this project. That girl would have had to pull off a Shawshank Redemption level mining project to escape that Dungeon over YEARS of successive fellow prisoners getting eaten or whatever.

Morgan Freeman voiceover:"Tess crawled through a river of shit to escape that dangly titty monster....."
