This is a well made and enjoyable movie (which is a shocking thing to say about the director of Miss March), but the portrayal of police in this one left a bad taste in my mouth. It reminded me of the terrible Candyman reboot in that regard, and makes me think the director was just trying to please the Twitter crowd.
The police have done stuff like this in real life. The Dahmer one actually happened and he got to off a lot more people because they just let it go. They're humans like everybody else and can make mistakes or willingly blow shit off.

I liked it though it does kinda phone in the ending. Def more of a 70's "this is fuuuucked up" vibe than a true slasher one.

All the characters had decent motivations for their actions, no one did anything tooooo extreme given the genre, and the first third, just wow, built the momentum to carry it.

Took a break from Run, Sweetheart, Run to watch this before my HBO sub expires and damn, these two leads could be sisters. I guess mixed race girls are the new scream queen blondes :p
That's because mixed women are the fucking hottest. 😁😍

It's been a few months since I watched but didn't the police operator straight up tell the woman that there are no units available and then hung up on her? Yeah, that's not how police operate in real life. That's what Twitter ACAB types want you to believe, but in real life if there are no units available there is this thing called a queue and they'll get to you when they can, not just abandon a woman in distress lol

There was that, when she was just calling for a random homeless guy outside her house, but then there was the bit where she was standing in front of two cops, AT THE HOUSE, with TWO EXPENSIVE CARS OUT FRONT, telling them there was a guy in danger just inside and they wouldn't go in or take her away.

The implication is that they thought she was a crack head in a largely abandoned neighborhood, but she is fairly articulate and not crack whorey so it does ring a little false.

TBF I'm not sure what cops would do in this situation. Kick the door down? Look in the windows? Call the realtor?

This was enjoyable enough to watch once but the movie got progressively less interesting as it went on.

I couldn’t stop laughing when Justin Long started measuring everything. That was fantastic.
My thoughts exactly.

I was like, bro! What is you doing (as someone in Real Estate), that shit means noting 😂

So who was taking care
of the dad in the bed? He clearly couldn't do shit for himself and just suicided at the first opportunity. So why was the daughter afraid to go there? I'm guessing sequel bait of other kids or some other menace down there
The homeless man did say that “she isn’t the most horrific thing down there” (paraphrased)

So, probably.

Yeah, I didn't really have a problem with the second encounter because, as you said, the implication that she was mistaken for a random crackhead was both clear and somewhat believable.

The "no units available" thing was the particular moment that left a bad taste in my mouth, probably because it happens fairly early in the movie and is completely unbelievable.

could have sworn that was in reference to the father/serial killer. He said that before his reveal.
I thought so too initially, but even she was afraid to approach that room. So, what was keeping his bed ridden ass alive?

Probably the best movie I've seen this year. Close call between Everything Everywhere and The Batman, but I'm giving the edge to Barbarian on its flawless direction.

Won't make my top 10 simply because it's a one-and-done movie. No lasting power; no reason to ever watch it again. But it was a pleasant surprise in a sea of otherwise mediocre film this year.

And I'm extremely happy I went in blind and I thank GAF for that recommendation.

So, you didn't find the swerve from effective, taut horror thriller to comedy horror schlock jarring then?

This feels like a movie that because it tries something different, people are over hyping it, simply for that difference. The execution does not warrant such glowing praise. It should be commended for not being predictable, but it undercuts its own tension and horror so badly, that it ruins the movie as an entire experience.

There is - frustratingly - a truly gripping horror movie here, if the film makers had the courage to maintain the tension. And it wouldn't have taken much. Replace the saggy titty 'someone's in my fruit cellar' monster with a feral, monstrous human antagonist or two, and tone down the Justin Long fuckassery with a more down to earth and serious take, and you're getting there.

Never been more disappointed with the direction a movie has taken, simply because they got too scared of maintaining the terror. Cowards.

The viewer has no idea a monster exists at that point, genius. As far as the viewer knows, the lady is in distress because some hobo nearly attacked her, which is when the police say they have no units available and just hang up on her.

I believe it was Sam Raimi that said horror films need to be believable to be truly scary, and at that point believability was out the window.... momentarily. As I said in my very first post in this thread, I still enjoyed the movie quite a bit. Don't act like an idiot and put words in my mouth, thanks.

It was a fun movie with some good horror to it, comedy, and silliness. 7/10. Have to really throw any kind of logical thinking out the window though for the characters and just enjoy it for what it is.

If you want to watch a good horror movie skip this pretentious crap and watch Smile.

Smile was good, but felt kinda derivative of stuff like It Follows, plus while I would say Barbarian’s final act was good just not on par with the first 2/3, the final act of Smile felt extremely predictable, like I knew pretty much how the final few minutes would play out. Smile also had a bit too many unnecessary jump scares, I preferred the ambience and fucked up visuals of Barbarian. For my money, Barbarian and especially Pearl (Mia Goth better get some award nominations, I swear to God) were far better recent horror films.

Smile while predictable was unpretentious and way more focused and creepy. The main actress also did an excellent job too. Barbarian was just your typical "elevated horror" crap where you can almost see the writers smelling their own farts as they write this shit. And btw the trope of naked misshapen old people with these movies is getting pathetic now, not only the makeup and prosthetics are unconvincing but it's not even scary, it's just ugly and disgusting. These movies are barely horror because they're not scary, they're a new genre where the movie just makes you feel uncomfortable and miserable.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
I kept waiting for like more of a 'smart' twist or reveal and by the end I was like well I guess there's nothing coming.

Ain't no 65 year old incest grandma overpowering anybody.
That number is too big.

Plus, it was obvious the movie wasn‘t meant to be realistic with how strong she was. This would be like complaining about how impossibly durable to damage Michael Myers is.
She's the gigantic inbred rape baby of an inbred rape baby and she's got retard strength. My disbelief was thoroughly suspended.

Pearl is excellent. Even if she doesn’t win anything (which she likely won’t) I’m just glad she’s getting more lead roles and working with a talented writer/director in the horror genre. She was great in X, but she blew me away in Pearl. Loved the shot during the closing credits.

Yeah, I’d be content with just some award nominations even if she didn’t win. Just to get her name out there more. Toni Collette got quite a few for Hereditary (and the film itself as well) though sadly no recognition from the Oscars or Golden Globes.

Yeah, that closing shot was great, but I particularly loved the six minute monologue to the end she did with no cuts.

Oh hell yeah. That monologue is one of my favorite moments out of any film this year. Probably the best thing Ti West has written, and she nails it. I can’t wait for MaXXXine.

I mean I can complain about that. I don't think the Halloween movies are good, scary, or interesting outside of the first one where it could be argued that he was still a mortal man.

The way the monster in this can just rip apart stuff despite having like no upper body strength or mass does take me out of it. I'd rather instead of her overpowering people that she had caused them to break their legs or something in the tunnel so she could take advantage of them.

I'm also sitting there questioning how an airbnb continues without reviews being like 'this places is literally in a warzone, also everyone that stays here ends up dead, how am I even writing this review'

I just was expecting it to be more clever than it ended up being.

Was in the mood for scary movies so I decided to watch recent popular releases with the missus

Started with terrifier 2:
This movie is absolute dog shit and anyone that told me to watch this movie should be sent off to a gulag. Felt like a cheap porno movie with some of the worst acting I've ever seen and no actual nudity. The gore is boring, the movie not scary at all, and there's just no redeeming qualities besides the hot ass protagonist. The most horrifying part of the movie is the absurdly long run time and the horrible editing, it just never ends

The barbarian:
This movie was entertaining but overall not very scary. Ending was stupid as shit. My fav part is when Long apologized for chucking her down to save himself

Overall I felt the most "eerie" movie was Smile. Still dumb as shit with a bad ending, but some scary/disturbing moments

If anyone can recommend me some other good/better ones I'd appreciate it 👹

Just saw this and it's the best horror movie I've seen in awhile. It seems like you're upset it didn't follow the usual horror trope.

I suppose they could have made a Descent rip off where the girl valiantly fought the monster and in the end kills it in some ingenious way but we've seen that before.

So is the implication that the typical American white man is the "Barbarian"?

Anyways, 4 out of 10. I guess i would recommend it if you really have nothing else to watch.

Btw Get Out is still by far the best modern horror flick ive seen.

I mean like stuff in the last 5 years or so. What else is good that i missed?
Im not into slashers or demon/ghost stories, those bore me to death and arent scary.

Btw Midsommar was alright.

Btw dont want be too unfair to Barbarian. I thought the first half was pretty brilliant and kept you guessing. And I think it did the "house with a creepy cellar" thing better than anything ive seen. But once the bad guy was revealed it all went downhill....

I can agree that the movie had a great first third, out of three quite distinct in mood and tone thirds.
Second one leaned a bit on dark humor (which I can appreciate to a point) and also went the direction of "who is the real villain here, huh? huh? yeah", which was... not handled well.
Third act is pretty much "I don't know what they were thinking" levels of writing. I guess money ran out? I doubt this was always the vision to end the movie.

Anyway, it's a movie to pass the time. Probably better enjoyed with friends.

I think I liked "Smile" a tad better. But overall both are not movies I'd revisit or even think much about after a few days.

Horror is probably 90% of what I watch here are a few recent ones I've liked better than Get Out. Incantation, The Medium, Saint Maud, You Are Not My Mother, The Night House

No, Mr. pretend victimhood. "Barbarian" comes directly from something in the movie.

Just saw this one.

Good first act, lots of tension and suspense.

Interesting second act. Not a fan of the subject matter for Justin Long’s character but he had some funny moments (measuring tape etc.). Expectations subverted, but I was interested to see where they would take it.

Third act completely falls on its face. Total cop out, like they ran out of ideas or didn’t have the balls to see it through without conveying to the audience that they felt the movie was a joke. FunkMiller FunkMiller was spot on with his critique at the time.

With a different third act it could’ve been great.

all in all, it's yet another forgettable experience, the type of movie where upon watching it, you completely forget of its existence hours/days later.

In some ways, its "subverting expectations" element reminded me of the original (Spanish) REC movie - that movie at least lingered withing you for weeks (talking about the ending specifically), shame that it spawned 2 other sequels which were -pretty much - cack.

Oh well...

Not trying to nitpick, but the first sequel to REC is actually pretty damn good. It certainly shows improvement in scale and I really enjoyed the extra creativity with the staging to keep the first-person/found footage approach from getting stale. Just saying, if you liked the original I'd be very very surprised if you didn't think it was worth your time, as its a solid continuation.

The other *two* sequels are a step-down, but for different reasons. Genesis is basically barely related, more a class/social comedy, and is spotty at best even if you can get past it being such a left-turn thematically. Apocalypse on the other hand tries to close off the first two instalments and is just -and it pains me to say this- incomprehensibly bad. And that's coming from somebody who like Jaume Belaguero's stuff more than most.

Back on topic: Barbarian was forgettable.

Watched it just now because Halloween = scary movies, what a weird movie. There's three different and distinct styles of movies mashed into one.

It starts off super serious, then turns into a horror-comedy, then into a slasher. If any it caught me off guard every time so kudos for that.

However, ultimately the payoff was not worth it. When the hobo said something worse than the lady was in the basement I was expecting something truly insane, but I guess he was just referencing the monster that was the old guy. Which in a sense, yeah he was worse, but this built up anticipation that never came to fruition.

The movie comes close to being great but never fully commits. Seems like it's never really sure what it wants to be.

O, and lmao at the extremely obtuse police officers. That shit was just dumb as fuck.
