It's only Saturday morning! How do the even know yet?

They won't know 100% until they do the weekend totals obviously but they have years and years of cinema data to work from so they extrapolate based one past movies based on what was earned on Friday/typical drops against the Friday drop/typical weekend attendance differences things like that. Unless this movie has a huge Saturday upswing (which I believe happened with Force Awakens it got a pretty big weekend bump after the estimates) or something, the estimate is probably pretty close.

Somewhat related, I just discovered The World's Finest TV Movie is on RT

WHY couldn't they just model it after this? WHY?!?

Less reviews that are positive will shoot you up to the top quick.

Ninja Scroll deserves that 100% tho.

To end a meta-debate running through the thread, new threads for new news is fine. It happens all the time for box office threads and provides a space for breakout discussion for those who might not check on the weekly thread. If not, we'd have locked it before the first page was full.

That said.

What a historic collapse. It's going be fascinating to see how WB responds, because they have to respond if they want this franchise to work. They can't build a cinematic universe with Snyder at the helm. Not beyond the opening weekend their marketing can buy.

Dropping from $1b+ to the ~$850m it's now tracking to is huge because that's about the level WB needed to break even on this. So they're watching their box office profits collapse. Making money when it hits video was not the plan.

Yep. That's why losing a few hundred million hurts WB so much. Well, that and poisoning their Justice League franchise before it even starts.

You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun, Zack. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.

Yeah. This broken man is going to be behind a camera on Justice League in just over a week.

I hope he found the time to rest.

I know people love taking shots at the cast and crew of the film, but man, not all of them are taking it well. I'll say, funnier part of the sad Affleck video is seeing Cavill super optimistic. In a sense truer to the Bats and Superman relationship than what's in the film

They would need to cut shit out in addition to adding stuff and it doesn't sound like that's happening.

Honestly, the only scenes I felt were unnecessary was the kryptonian bullet subplot. Nothing else stuck out as out of place.

You joke but I'm gonna be so annoyed when the director's cut turns out to be a decent movie and the fanboys start shitting on marvel again as if they're coming from a point of sophistication and maturity.

No way, I loved the movie as is, and I'm eagerly anticipating the true version of it.

It just seems like the damage is done, no matter how good that cut may or may turn out.

They're already responding by retooling suicide squad into Deadpool.

It deserved the drop off. Bad films making lots of money isn't good for cinema. I liked Affleck's Batman but the script and editing were objectively bad. It had real glaring problems that you would have to intentionally try and ignore to say otherwise.

Really? "Stop everything! Here are some trailers" didn't strike you as out of place?

I could argue for more but that scene is the most glaring example of something that should have remained on the cutting room floor

I'm wondering what WB plan to do regarding Justice League, now.

There's no reason to think it will perform better than the internal crossover they've already done with Batman v Superman.

I wonder if it's a cheaper movie.

All I want is Snyder's JL film. After I get that, all the fanboys and MCU fans can burn WB to the ground and bask in the ashes. Just let me have the JL movie and I'll jump along the silly humor and not serious train.

Nah. If artsy comic book movies can't thrive, I don't give a damn about the genre. Y'all can have it.

I wonder if people share the same sentiment for all bad movies like Transformers or is the hate specifically reserved for BvS. And come on now this are big summer blockbuster not art type films. Cinema will be fine.

You believe BvS to be artsy?

There is absolutely no shortage of loathing for the Transformers franchise. EVERYONE knows those are garbage.

The movie was terrible, the bad guy didn't have any motive and a poor Joker rip off, Batman wasn't terrible, it's even the best thing from the movie but its killing parts are terrible, the dream sequences are just out of place, the amount of destruction is ridiculous and the pacing from the movie is off, I won't talk about the miscasts ( Gadot and Jesse ) I hope Znyder will be fired.

imagine if Civil War:

Here's some info if people want to see a little bit more about second weekend drops and it has some interesting historical worst/best drops

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_weekend_in_box_office_performance

Bruh did you read that?

Assuming that the number of theaters stays the same, a normal drop in box office gross from the first weekend to the second would be 40%. A drop of greater than 60% indicates a weak future performance.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/drops.htm

It's solidly in the top 100 biggest drops since 1982, possibly in the top 50.

Some of the info is a little misleading as as I think blockbusters tend to see bigger drops so I don't think 50-60 ends up being too bad as indicated in the article.
What part of "'Batman V Superman’ Takes A Dive With -70% Second Weekend" is remotely misleading?

Citation needed for the bold.

Okay, I haven't seen Bvs yet, but I can tell you right now if you think that's artsy, you're out of your mind.

The quickest way to kill my enthusiasm about DC movies is to turn them into MCU movies where they are cracking jokes in the middle of "life or death" fights. There's a place for light hearted CBMs but if we're getting that from both DC and Marvel count me out.

Oddly enough I liked the movie even after reading the reviews, spoilers and reasons why I should hate it.
Maybe it was the low expectations. I don't know.

50 Shades of Grey has the largest drop of all time for a film that opened over $50M. Number two was Deathly Hallows Pt 2. Valentines Day and New Moon were the only other films in that group with 70%+ drops.

So basically, two films that were heavily inflated by V-Day, two films that had huge midnight grosses (larger than BvS in terms of dollars and percentage of opening weekend), and all 4 heavily appealing to female audiences.

If BvS hits that 70% drop mark, it will be the worst drop of all time for a male-skewing major opener.

No I meant in the Wikipedia article... why would I talk about 50-60 in regards to BvS? My citation is that as I mentioned Age of Ultron had a 60ish% drop and still did 1.4 billion. By any estimation, 70% is absolutely a garbage fire.

They already released two serious Batman movies that made over a billion dollars, they had a formula that worked. More likely they will go back to that style rather than copying Marvel.

Snyder should ever have been given this movie after Man of Steel.

You say that. But the way the movies are so far, it's not really working out either. DC could've made darker movies successfully, but it's easy to get ridiculous by going too dark and they fell in that trap. We already have a nearly perfect Snyder movie for that overly dark kind of movie and we don't need an entire universe in that way.

Maybe I'm just hyped to see those guys on the big screen, but it really didn't bother me.

Then again, I was fine the Ragnarok teaser in AoU and other scenes of that sort in the MCU.

There is and it was already done well by Nolan. Snyder just comes off as intentionally trying to make things grim dark for shock value. He admitted that's why he killed
Jimmy Olsen in the beginning of the movie
. Not that 99.9% of the audience realized who that was.

Yeah, I keep telling myself that but I'm worried. There's a place for humor but every 30 sec during a fight ruins it for me.

I watched the movie last night and kept thinking "When is this going to start sucking? I thought this movie was supposed to suck?"

I loved almost every minute of it. But it was divisive among my group of friends. I went with 4 other people. 2 people loved it (including me), 1 person merely liked it, 1 person didn't like it, and 1 person hated it.

I think I've come to terms with knowing the things that I love and hold dear to my heart won't win universal praise. That's fine. I saw Jupiter Ascending 3 times in theatres and felt that was a 10/10 and that movie was a huge bomb. I would give Batman V Superman a 9/10 personally. I loved the visual style and the music - I think visuals and sound can elevate almost anything into "watchable" when the visuals and sounds are so wonderfully compelling as in BvS - Snyder and Zimmer/JunkieXL killed it in that regard.

TDK style only works for Batman. That's the rabbit hole that has lead to our current situation.

The problem isn't the darker tone, it's the fact that it's a bad movie. And Nolan's Batfilms are fun too, without being full of jokes

Never seen so much hatred in a movie

It's because these are beloved characters and the chance to set up a glorious DC Cinematic Universe-which has the potential to be the best thing ever.

But when Warner Bros puts people like Zack Snyder in charge of this-and seems to not even give a shit, it's easy to see why people hate it.

People take the Martha scene weird. Obviously the Martha scene made Batman realize Superman has family and people who care for him, that there is humanity in him.
