Batman v Superman Extended Edition trailer + details

I did not recognize Jena Malone until I read in this thread that she was in the trailer. Do we know who she plays ? She doesn't look like Carrie Kelley or Barbara Gordon, does she just play a random side character ? If so, that's a waste.

The new footage looks interesting and I'm curious to see this, the Watchmen director's cut was a huge improvement. I don't expect to like this extended BvS but hopefully I will still enjoy it a little bit more than the theatrical version.

Edit : and what about the picture of Malone with red hair that she posted on Instagram around the time of the shoot ? I'm really puzzled by this...

Can't be any worse at least. Please don't let me down a second time.

Rumoured to be
Oracle.

It will be. Directors Cuts are always better because it's their vision and not fucked up bu the studio or whatever.

I can't tell if you're trolling at this point. There are plenty of examples of movies with an inferior director's cut.

Alien is a good example. The DC's extra bits do nothing but remove some of the expertly crafted tension of the theatrical cut.

Arbitrary? I watched the movie. There are wcenes that could have been cut and nothing of value to the story would have been lost.

When I didn't finish watching BvS, the thought, "it needed more" didn't go through my mind.
It needed more of the important stuff and less superflous stuff. This keeps the superflous stuff (apparently) but adds the meaningful stuff that should have been in the movie in the first place.

It's not always true that the director's cut is the best version of a film, and it's not always true that the director's unimpeded vision is better than one where the studio played a role.

To be fair to Ridley Scott, he says the theatrical version is still his preferred version. He only did the "Director's Cut" because they found an old stash of originally shot footage and the studio felt he could use it.

I'm not expecting a Kingdom of Heaven style miracle here. THAT Director's Cut blew my mind because the theatrical was horrendous and confusing, but then the director's cut was basically an extra hour of CONTEXT and ACTION that thematically made the film work, made character actions make sense, and even restored a climatic final fight between the main hero and villain of the story (who cuts out the final battle of a rivalry the film spent ages dwelling on in the theatrical?).

But BvS didn't just have confusing or context-deprived scenes (well not just those); it has legitimately awful ones. And there's a lot of mischaracterization that will forever bug me. They could add an extra 30 minutes of Cavill smiling and it still wouldn't offset the rest of his dour portrayal.

Why would anyone want to watch an even longer version of this bloated movie? Jesus it was a pain to get through.

But she wasn't cast as Barbara. She's blonde in the film.

Goddamn I fell like watching BvS again. Lets embrace the suffering.

We should have a GAF Watches Batman v Superman Extended Edition thread. Sorta like the impromptu one we had when Fantastic Four premiered on HBO.

Adding 30 minutes more is definitely not going to help this film. It was too bloated to begin with. Could they add more cool action? Sure. Could they add more character development and motivations? Sure. But what about the stuff in the theatrical that just didn't work and should have been removed? Surely that is still in the movie and thus dragging it down. Including, but not limited to:

  • The JL-advertising power-hour where the movie stops and Wonder Woman watches clips of upcoming DC superheroes
  • The "Nightmare" dream sequence that, while cool visually, is completely irrelevant to the film and unnecessary as Batman already has solid motivation.
  • Lex Luthor having bad writing that feels like a high school kid who read some philosophy and is trying to be edgy
  • Superman's parents continuing to be terrible humans who want him to be selfish
  • "Martha" being the completely anti-climactic cause of the end of heroes' fight

Yes, because it was the length that was the problem.

(Just kidding --- sort of.)

I didn't *hate* it, it just wasn't very well done. I'm interested in the extended cut, though.

Keep in mind that not only stuff was added, but other scenes are allegedly recut and shuffled in order.

I want to believe damn it.

I can't fucking wait for this. Sitting in the theater, I definitely thought that if there's one thing wrong with BvS, it's that there wasn't enough of it. Will watch.

No director's cut will ever save how fundamentally poor this movie is. From the plot, to the villains, and the pisspoor motivations, as well as "M-MUH MARFA."

Day oooooooone. What a difference. I'm amazed.

I know I'll love it, I hope it is able to change views of the general public too. Word of mouth hitting those who skipped it.

I eagerly await people telling me that I need to see the Extended Edition before I dismiss BvS for the garbage that it is.

Considering the theatrical edition it's hard to imagine this will do much more than plug a few holes and (hopefully) do something about the pacing/editing. Still interested in checking it out though. While the movie was awful I found it to have some strange appeal in a manner similar to Lynch's Dune disaster.

This looks to be included in the UK BR release (unless they found another 30 minutes somewhere) but I'm a little confused with the 12 rating. It's a hard 12 rather than a 12a (which it must have been at the cinema, as I took my 10 year old daughter) but surely there can't be content that would be R rated in the US and only a 12 in the UK?

We're getting a cut version, aren't we? :(

Can someone explain to me why this trend of launching movies in digital days and even weeks before the bluray/DVD? What gives?

Also two weeks is a lot! Star Wars and Deadpool weren't even a week between digital and disc.

I'm gonna give it a shot. They said this cut will add in a lot of connective tissue to the film, which was sorely needed as a lot of motivation and setup for the characters was really missing. I still enjoyed it, but it was clearly trying to do too much in so little time. It's very difficult to backdoor an entire film universe in a follow-up to a very controversial superhero film in only 140+ minutes. Not that it matters now, but I hope this movie can improve upon it a bit.

it's to entice people to buy digital instead of just redboxing it

I hope they fix the part where Superman forgets to use his x-ray vision to see through Batman's smoke grenade. Also, the rest of the movie.

NeoGAF's smiling token!
That already looks like a better version of the film, but knowing everything that's contained in the film's theatrical version... eeek.
