Batman v. Superman RT Thread: like standing ovations in rain

I am guilty of a bit of schadenfreude.
But it has nothing to do with Marvel.
My favorite superhero movie is probably the Dark Knight and there are plenty of Marvel movies that were meh.

I thought MOS was a complete piece of loud garbage that was a mega bore despite being ram packed with action. I somehow had hopes for this after the first trailer. The second trailer completely soured me on the project. It was a complete plot spoiler trailer. My schadenfreude arises from all of the fanboys irrationally trying to defend the movie ruining trailer. And also from MOS fans. I don't know why but I really have a pet peeve with people who have terrible taste. :P

This is where I am at except the first trailer didn't light a fire under my ass either.

I will probably see this one day on a plane but nothing I've read or heard leads me to believe it'll be any better than the issues I had with Man of Steel.

A couple of reviewers thought having the minorities in Zootopia be predators was problematic, because the prey animals did have reason to fear them, and they felt that muddies the messages. It's something the film addressed directly, but they missed it.

I read that Zootopia is actually a movie about racial profiling. Your comments seem to support that view.

Wowwww, this has now crept into territory that doesn't even seem worth a viewing. 40 and above I could maybe work with but usually when a movie is panned like this I tend to agree with critical consensus. Damn shame. MoS and the Singer Superman were both boring as hell. I don't understand how they keep getting this wrong.

The first trailer had me at cautiously optimistic.
I live the premise of asymmetric heroes. I liked it in Watchmen (the novel), I liked it in the Daredevil TV show.

Too bad this movie couldn't be just that. They had to add all the extra DCCU crap onto it.

Ooof . Under Wolverine Origins?? I haven't seen that garbage yet haha.

Only way to know for sure is to just go see it yourself. Chances aren't good, but you already planned to anyway.

What's so problematic about this movie is what it represents. To me at least: If a film wishes to tap into dark themes and make their protagonists morally conflicting, so be it. The end product may be great, it may be awful, whatever. But this is a movie using two of the world's most beloved heroes, two heroes who are irrefutably associated with children. Toys and games and other kid-friendly things are being sold celebrating these characters... and all I hear of this movie is that both main "heroes" kill or seemingly don't care about the death they're responsible for?

Who is this movie geared towards?

I originally really wanted to see this opening weekend but the bad reception is going to delay me a couple weeks. Opening weekend here is all 3D showings and I don't want to pay a premium for a likely dud. I'll still probably go on a discount day.

So it's big, ridiculous, violent, pitch-black dark and packed wall to wall with loud and fast action?

So... It's the Batman vs. Superman movie I always wanted?

16-30 demo. The DCCU is establishing itself as darker and edgier to contrast the lighter and poppy MCU, it's PG-13 to accommodate kids financially, but it's really not meant for kids.

It's just the average from the number of people who clicked the rating, which obviously for a hypebeast movie like this, it's going to be heavily inflated by fanboy ballot stuffing around release. Only a tiny fraction of those ratings are from people who have actually seen the movie.

I mean it doesn't even make sense that there can be that many votes before the movie is even out, especially when you compare the number of votes similar movies have. For instance, Deadpool has a bit over 140k votes after having been out for weeks and doing very well.

That's what I figured. Kinda shady that people can vote so early. "user rating" is never explained in the rotten tomatoes scoring system. Thanks.

Then why are there toys and shirts at Toys R Us? Why when I teach as a substitute teacher I hear kids talking about how awesome it's gonna be?

It unsettles me. Maybe I'm overreacting but I don't like that these characters are becoming so brooding. The Dark Knight was one thing... but fuck, at least Batman was a hero in that. I dunno what he is in this.

That is the tricky part with these properties. They are so huge, and there is of course a wing of it devoted to kids (cartoons, toys, etc)...

...but in terms of their actual source material, the comics, they stopped being aimed at kids ages ago, and I guarantee no matter how dark this movie is, it cant begin to approach some of the depravity and depths the comic stories have gone to in the past twenty years either

Ultimately, little has changed since the 80s when kids (like me) were busy playing with their Robocop and Terminator toys. Now these brands are just made to cover all age brackets, and ultimately when it comes to live action film, they will cater to the adult audience.

It's just weird to me. I work with kids on the daily and there's always a kid who has something to say about BvS. Maybe I grew up on too much Mario and Link and didn't accept enough darkness into my life at a young age, but fuck.

Preach.

Dem comic panel transitions.

I can appreciate the attempt with something like that in the same way I can appreciate the attempt to make a more sombre and drama-driven Hulk film but the big problem I have with those transitions is that this is a movie and in the movie they made those transitions are really awkward and took me out of the film. There's a way to do the comic panel transitions in a movie and this one did not do it right.

They used to make Robocop and Terminator toys when I was growing up, and those movies make BvS look like a Disney movie.
