I was at a show last night and I've spent some time talking to one of the DJ/producers and he passed me his AIM when I left. Now I'm not an AIMer, no account or whatever, so I thought maybe you guys can help me out with some stuff. Can everyone get an AIM account or just costumers of AOL? And what's the best client to use (since I don't want a bunch of spyware to be brought along).
Help would be appreciated

Anybody can get an AIM account. I use Trillian to connect to everything, and have no complaints.

Get GAIM. Anyone can use it, but you have to register your screen name/ password at the official site.

yeah, get AIM and DeadAIM... I've found Trillian, GAIM and the like to be poor imitators.

DeadAIM is definitely the place to be. You can get a cracked version pretty easily I imagine but it only costs 5 bucks to register and is totally worth it, so I know I had no qualms doing it.

only problem about DeadAIM is that it requires you get AIM, and the latest versions of AIM are mightyass pieces of shit.
And if you use one of the good older versions of AIM, sometimes you get compatibility problems with newer AIM users.
ah well...

just get AIM 5.5

going above that to the latest version fucks up DeadAIM, and the normal version of that AIM uses those shitty AOL 9.0 interactive buddy icons.

Get Trillian, if you have other instant messaging services that you use you can sign into all of them at once.

if you're looknig for something with multi-client access, Miranda IM is another option.
