Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

I think the Switch is a device that can appear complicated if you look at what it is. It has:

  • a handheld unit (the Switch system)
  • a dock for the system (the Switch Dock)
  • a dock/grip for the controllers (Joy-Con Grip)
  • two controllers (Joy-Con L and Joy-Con R) you can use independently or together in the Switch system or the Joy-Con Grip, and
  • a Switch Pro Controller.

The modes and configurations these seven parts can be in can get confusing, so it's a possibility that this (among other reasons) is why Nintendo has decided to market it as a home console. It just simplifies everything.

It's also likely that, because they are introducing it as a home console, they are avoiding certain subjects like the touch screen, which would be very illogical to talk about now if they just want to introduce it as a console.

In addition, if it is true that the Switch over/underclocks with power, then they are also in a position where they can't refer to the handheld mode as "underclocked" as opposed to if they marketed it as a handheld and said that the dock would "overclock" it.

After letting it all set in, I think I'm disappointed. The NX hype was too big I guess.

And the whole portable thing, I just want the Mario and Zelda games with as good visuals as possible for a reasonable price. Played with a regular controller. So now thanks to the whole on the go shizzle we're stuck with mobile hardware.

Just give me a Gamecube 2.0 :(

They dropped the gimmicks, they're converging their studios to focus on one platform, and they're giving mid-tier games an ideal system.

I'll admit, I'm a Nintendo fanboy... But this really looks like the thing Nintendo needed. And I can't fucking wait.

I'm not a Nintendo fanboy and I'm excited for those same reasons. The other thing I hope they have together is their user account system.

if there's literally no reason to have a touch screen, why would they include it?

He..he just told you. If something has a screen and is a handheld device its almost a given to be a touchscreen at this point. Who wouldn't immediately try to touch stuff after opening it. Past that if they are going to be porting games from either Wii U or 3ds a touch screen is going to be almost required at this point. Zelda BoTW is going to feel alot different if they don't and forget about a Mario Maker port if it doesn't have touchscreen.

Will Switch have 3rd party support on-par with PS4 and XOne?

If they can't get the heavy hitters like BF, CoD, GTA, and Far Cry then I don't see any reason to want it.

I already got burned on the Wii U with a very lackluster game library.

Why would you want to play CoD or GTA on a Nintendo platform if you already have a PS4 or XBO?

So significantly less powerful than the Xbox One? Do we know?

Console is sleek and cool, but if the dock doesn't add power, then this just feels like a Wii U without a touch screen. :/

DS games? The Wii U virtual console has a decent of amount of those games available to download. It'd be kind of silly to take the virtual console a step backwards. Then again, they did just that going from the Wii to the Wii U, so who knows...

I think Nintendo is just saying fuck it and freeing themselves from BC shackles this time around.

We don't even know if the dock will need to add power.

Just not enough known about the specs yet to judge.

I'll just parrot what Jeff said on the bombcast a few weeks back regarding the Switch's unification of console and handheld, insofar that it's going to be great having all of Nintendo's focus on one device as opposed to separate devices. Going forward we'll no longer have to hum and haw over which platform gets which titles and so on. They are going to be able to channel all of their creative works into one device.

This is going to be a great time for their internal dev teams.

I'm surprised that the base unit contains no additional storage space. My initial thought would be that this would house most of your library and you'd "switch" games from internal storage to the tablet to play them on the move. If that's not the case, I'm a little worried about how much internal storage this thing will have as someone that prefers to go all digital

It would seem from the video the portable has WiiU graphics and the home console don't add anything more, except maybe full hd.

There is Skyrim but.. Did someone try to compare it to other versions ? Ha but wait it's probably not running on it anyway -__-

Yeah this is already bought. Looks great, features seem to be great, concept seems to be great, and we get to no longer have a divide between portable and stationary console games, which is fantastic. Phoenix Wright, Pokemon, 999 for couch play. Great.

Also I love the name. I have a feeling this thing might turn out to be Nintendos second most successful modern console.

Most likely we'll see it having an SD or micro SD slot, similar to what the 3DS has, right? Granted, with modern games even the largest of those will probably fill up quickly.

I like your idea, that seems like something that would have made a lot of sense.
Okay... why is arranging a controller like that funny?
It's mostly not. It's ironically funny; in that it was never really funny, so it's funny that people keep referencing it like it was.

Except that the Wii U in the frame kinda representing the dead child/grieving mother is a little funny.

Sold! All right Nintendo, now make it so that I can transfer all my purchases from Wii U over to Switch, including VC, and I'll have a truly portable (unlike Wii U) console for all my Zelda titles. In other words, I'll have a portable Wind Waker HD.

Something that kinda struck me, was how core oriented it seems to be. Guess since we saw DeNa on that dev list, that'll change when we get the full blow out, but it seems very odd to me somehow.
They probably want to generate mainstream hype first before they show off more plans. Their focus is showing off the main concept of the Switch and not any auxiliary functions.

Not many talks about this pro controller. But damn it's looking nice. Much better as wiiu pro or xbox one/pro controllers. We can only decide how it plays when you have played with it, but it looks like you can't make this any better.

Hope it is packed in....not likely though :(

How is that surprising?

You are supposed to be switching from console to portable seamlessly. That ain't happening if there are two sources of storage.

Everything has to be on the core unit, which is the tablet in this case.

which is the bigger potential portable gaming audience in your opinion?

- small enough to fit in my pocket and carry it with me everywhere I go

or

- portable like a tablet that someone might carry in a bag or for long trips

these days I think it's the later

So from ign they said that the console is that tablet with the LCD, the dock just connects to the tv and charges the tablet

- so yeah you can probably figure out how strong the console will be

Was there even a shot of kids holding it?

I really wanted a new handheld for my kids... this doesn't look like it will work for them.

Just replace your ps4 and play it yourself, this isn't for the kids.

Btw, everywhere i go i see allot kids playing on a ipad, so i don't know what your talking about the size. Pocket is old fashioned.

I'm not sold on it yet, but definitely interested.

The bf is pretty hyped though, so I am guessing we will be getting one sooner rather than later.

I don't see what would prevent having the dock be able to hook up to an HDD for storage and even playing games from. There are undoubtedly certain games I will probably only care to play when docked so it would kind of be a waste to have such a game take up space on the handheld when I have no intention of using it on the go.

Plus there are plenty of people that will download a lot of games and even a 128GB SD card might not be enough after a while to store everything. Games always increase in size as the years go on. Wii U already had several games around the 20gb mark, the Switch probably will too, if not higher.

Is that a share button under the - ?
