So mini review from me now that it's completed, minus the chalice dungeon escapades. Speaking of which the boss I got on this third tier was Rom... this boss does not work in a confide room space. It's frustrating as hell. Ugh.
Mini Review---NO SPOILERS:
This game is a gem, and is somewhat hard to put into words. It's very much the Souls formula we've come to expect---learn boss patterns, risks, rewards, loose story, and interesting combat.
Let's hit the bullet points of what is great here:
*Combat is superb. It feels fresh without losing its core from the Souls game. These changes to losing the shield, speeding it up, emphasis on evasion, etc will make it impossible for me to go back to the old method. If there is a Dark Souls 3---count me out. Sword and board are history.
*Bosses are all fantastic. Some of the greatest variety of tactics can be employed, and they did NOT rehash bosses like say Dark Souls 1. This kept the game fresh the whole time, and simply riding on the bosses butt does NOT work like in Dark Souls.
*Regular foes kept challenge throughout the whole game. Fuck Mind Flayers, fuck bag men, and fuck the chain with giant sword dudes. You always had to be on your toes around these guys. While I'm at it---FUCK the bell ringing women later on who kept summoning dogs of hell on me. Lordy!
*Atmosphere...the atmosphere. As always Souls tops itself with its atmosphere. This world just oozes with it. From level design to music to NPCs, etc. Every corner has it, and it's a wonder how other games can't reach this level of immersion for its world you are put in.
*On the topic of music... the soundtrack is great, but I still prefer Dark Souls and Demon's Souls OST's. This has some good tracks, but not enough outstanding ones. Firelink Shrine, the final boss in Souls 1, etc I really enjoyed and will not forget anytime soon.
*Progression and mechanics here are not cumbersome, and are fine tuned. I always had this sense of something was coming next, and I could keep easing myself into whatever else was added on. Be it Arcane Tools or a new weapon to test out. Plus, I always kept changing up equipment where in Souls game I just felt the next set would probably beat my old set, and so I would ignore wearing previous outfits.
So where do negatives in this game lie? I guess my biggest gripes are minor other than the story which I felt was...not told well enough compared to past Souls attempts.
*Loading screens suck
*The bell ringing mechanics suck
*Chalice Dungeon grouping up? Sucks.
Those are my 3 biggest detractors other than the story which more over has to do with the ending options being...well trash. The "true" ending is one of the worst of any. I had to google to make sense of it, and was thoroughly disappointed. I did like the lore I read up on in game and online, but I felt in say Dark Souls 1 there was a more refined tale being told and if you paid moderate attention you could figure out who your character was in the grand scheme of things, and what you were doing within its world.
This game's lore, while fantastic from inspiration, is told so loosely that it's hard to have many people agreeing on major points anywhere. I sincerely hope there is an interview later with the developers to just tell me a few things to clear it up.
I didn't like ending 1 or ending 2 either. None of the 3 options felt satisfying. It was a lose-lose-lose...I wanted more.
----------------
So that's it. TL;DR Buy this game. 9/10 in my book. Fun from start to finish, but the endings could have been way better, or the lore more fleshed out to make sense of all three for the user without double guessing or having to hop online to understand it.
