Bloomberg: Ballmer may name Windows boss as new head of hardware / Xbox

It seems like there will be a specific leader of the Xbox division, with her being who they report to.

The bigger news should be about who that specific person is going to be.

dunno the background of the lady, but I'm having a HUGE deja vu here.

I really dislike seeing all the circlejerk 'canclin mah preorderz if tru' BS going on in this thread. This is a great move for MS. Win8 may not be the best OS, but atleast it has a cohesive vision as to what it's trying to become. Something Xbox should have.

I am sure most who said they would cancel never had it preordered in the first place as that would be a ridiculous reason to cancel a preorder.

She was brought on well after the vision for Win 8 was created. That was Sinofsky who is no longer with MS.

The larger issue here is the re-org that MS is going through, whatever position she takes might not end up being the equivalent of what Mattrick had.

Having been part of the Windows team before I am a little bit the wrong person to comment fairly about it, but there is no doubt in my mind that the Windows org and collective power behind it is far more capable and veteran than the Xbox org. It is just a reality that lots of people in Windows have been there a LONG time and have made enough mistakes to smell one a mile away, they have been pushed hard by Apple and mobile to adapt and adapted so fast that consumers couldn't handle that much change at once. It is pretty easy to argue that Windows 8 is even from a objective perspective clearly better than Windows 7...it is more stable, has an application publishing platform that is easier for devs to sell their homebrew/indie games on (to potentially hundreds of millions of users if they actually fix the Storefront to be nice), performance is better, some power user tools are better, etc. I personally think the good outweighs the bad. Hopefully Windows 8.1 turns the perception around.

Terry hasn't been able to ship Windows Phone 8 in Japan so I am not very happy with that situation. Windows 8 team is actually doing pretty damn well in Japan right now believe it or not...against tougher and tougher competition.

Then there are other capable execs like Qi Lu who is like the Enter the Dragon dominate the entire team the second he enters the room level of bad ass.

So anyway, whatever happens there are two key things 1) Is the person at top a gamer, 2) If not, do they have kids that are gamers. If either two of these things are true then we will be fine (if the kids are Gaffers then it is even better) If it is Qi Lu, he is definitely more on the brainiac side of the bunch so more like a Bill Gates type guy.

Now I want this Qi Lu guy to head their hardware division.

Hey guys! Let's start a twitter campaing. #QiLuSaveTheXbox Let's be the white knights and heroes of the internet! GAF ASSEMBLE!

Then why does his game look so bad?

Hahaha.

I don't even know what to say. Dunaway is in sales and marketing. Larson-Green has a background in engineering and programing and used to run office and now runs the Windows division. They're skills are not remotely the same, nor are their responsibilities.

Unless you're just being sexist.

Alright get some news from my MS friend

He said "several peoples" scramble for the new Xbox boss position,he even said it's "fun to watch" if you(me) are MS employee

So i guess we won't know who's the new boss of Xbox division until July 18 at least

He was being either sexist or ignorant. Hopefully the latter.

LOL. I guess it's kinda the same when you boo Balotelli for being an idiot and you get called out for racism.

Just pointing out that among people like Harrison, Mehdi, and even Allard she doesn't strike me as a sensible choice. Sex is not a factor in this, unless we're talking about another Cammie Dunaway and not the one that was blantantly out of place in her role at Nintendo. We're going from a guy who had a huge videogame-specific background to her. Not the direction I'd like to see.

But hey: sexism!

The guy I responded to..

Fucking hell, sorry bud. I didn't read your quote properly. My bad :) My original post is directed at him in that case.

Max any idea who these potentials are?
If your being sarcastic ignore me lol

Well, it's more them jumping on looks and not trackrecord instead of latter then former and there's where the problem is.

That's not true if that were the case those Jade Raymond threads would be all about how she looked and what she was wearing that what she has accomplished...oh wait.

Messed up times for MS, interested to see how they plan on righting the ship

People wouldn't say sexism if you could articulate the ways in which a programmer and a marketer are similar, other than both having a vagina. FYI, the gaming industry is full of execs who don't play games, or having a gaming (or even technical) background. Yusuf Mehdi doesn't have a videogame-specific background. Neither did Allard before Xbox. Harrison is the only one you mentioned who has been in the games industry for a while.

Xbox gets a demotion. Clearly it's not a priority, now it's just one of many projects.

Yeah, Microsoft spent $1 billion on games, and $700 million on 300,000 servers towards Xbox Live (and Office 365) because the Xbox platform is not a priority.

They also spent $250,000,000 on Kin.

edit:
Not saying Xbox isn't a priority for Microsoft (as per my thoughts above), just that dollar value isn't a good metric for judging commitment. The company has cash to burn.

Not predicting the future, of course. She could end up being awesome in that role as anyone. But as I mentioned, going from Mattrick to her doesn't inspire me great trust. Of course, you're welcome to build whatever vagina-conspiration you want about that. I guess it makes a good pair with me being called out for the opposite reason when protesting about Gamereactor removing Ellie from their TLOU cover : )

MS has been moving for some time for unifying a lot of the 'core'. WP/Windows/Xbox now share this core, so each OS has it's own flavor on top of the core.

Unifying the different divisions could be useful, as it would accelerate development in the similarities between the three OSes. Think about the 'Bing' apps on Win8. If every part of the platform and development tools were the same, much of the code-behind portion of porting the news, sports, finance, etc apps revolve around targeting a particular form factor. With Xbox, you can use voice commands to pan, with windows phone you change to a more Vertical swipe instead of horizontal.

Having the groups under one 'roof' so-to-speak incentivizes that cross-collaboration. That XKCD comic might have been extremely relevant 5 years ago, but nowadays it's seemingly less and less relevant. Teams are way more interested in helping each other out, and ICs want to meet up and discuss how features can affect each other.

And I still use my Kin OneM every day. EVERY. DAY.

Totally worth the $250,000,000.

I would not buy and xbox if they give it to the head of windows. Give the division to someone who has a history in games like they did with Mattrick.

Edit: Wait she's not actually running the xbox division directly? If so the hiring isn't bad. She should bring back Allard.
