Bloomberg: Why PlayStation Fans Are Cheering CEO’s Departure

Sure enough the presentation was before the Activision news. We can't be sure if they saw it coming of course. All we have is his word for it; the quote that wasn't floating around recently. I'd say it's hard to know if it's primarily Activision or was consolidation in general or simply looking for avenues of growth with no mind paid to acquisitions. One sure thing is that now it's more important than ever.

Personally I think Jim Ryan was chasing financial success like Fornite and Genshin Impact. And that's really fine, but I also think he dove in headfirst into Gaas rather than a more gradual approach that would have allowed PlayStation to grow naturally into that space but also not be so jarring a change to PlayStation fans. Yeah....I'm being an armchair expert and I fully realize that. In either case, I don't think Jim Ryan has done a good job communicating PlayStation's future very well. All the speculation, mine included, is a result of that.

You guys can bring me all of the LOL's but Jim Ryan isn't the only one that has shifted. It is the entire industry. Adjust or get left behind. I would be angry at Jimbo for GAAS but only if others were not doing the same thing.

Dear idiots,

They are going to be losing a massive load of revenue from call of duty one of these days. And who knows what else. The gass is them not waiting around to do something about it. That will not change.
Yep but they should also just let their 3 billion acquisition do its thing rather than force premier AAA sp devs to

He's calling it quits before we can see if his GAAS initaive is successful. Just like Bob Iger calling it quits before Disney+ needed to return a profit. Iger came back, to right the ship and I suspect Ryans retirement will either be delayed or canceled

Yeah.....get one or two Gaas games out and see how it goes. Seems way too ambitious trying to push out ten from the get-go. Can't help but wonder if SP games are being impacted.

It is 10000% not Jim alone who wants to move to gaas. Sony sees the end game they are not stupid. Home consoles are going away one day .. I’d say in the next 20 years max.

Gaming will be a Sony app on all devices.

So nintendo is going to get left behind?

Good on Jason to not ignore our voices.

For all his faults, he is a good reporter.
Don't get roped into becoming a pawn for Scheier and his like in the industry. They had a stick up their asses about Ryan for the crime of not taking sides on abortion and referring to his pet in an internal email.

The fact is that the live service shit was going to be tried with or without Ryan at some point. There's too much money being thrown around for a business not to explore it. Want someone to blame, blame the players and payers of catshit like Destiny 2, Fortnite, Warzone, GTAO, etc.

Nonsense. Neither Sony nor MS or Amazon will ever spend the tens of billions of dollars needed to create millions of cloud servers across the globe.

In 20 years, we will be looking at 100-200 tflops monsters that are insanely expensive to produce. Maybe $1,000 a pop. Why in the world would they eat that cost just to provide a monthly subscription?

I honestly dont care what his agenda is, but sony fans discontent with Jimbo and his policies was simply not covered by the press. I welcome our opinions being given some more exposure even if it comes from someone like jason.

I'm not cheering, I just feel like I know nothing about the dude. I remember Ken Kutaragi, Phil Harrison, Jack Tretton, Kaz... I'm used to Playstation top execs being charismatic in one way or another, and I can recall shit they did at E3 and online presentations or whatever. But this Jim Ryan guy, I feel like this the first I've heard of him. And he seems like a real stiff.

Why do you think they are buying devs? 😵‍💫. Who ever has the most AAA franchises will be able to get people on their apps. I mean it’s not rocket science.

Just look at steam vs other pc stores. Every is buying from steam because they are proven and have all the big games. It’s going to be the same for Sony and ms in the future except they will be competing with steam, apple, and google as well.

I'm not saying that the poster was correct, but why in the world would MS spend $7.5 billion on Bethesda just to put their games on monthly subscription? Sometimes they just don't make financial sense but do it anyway just to get the subs up.

Schreier doesn't care about gamers, but I repeat the second point as a question: Do you really think that someone other than Ryan didn't or wouldn't have pitched a live service push in a strategy meeting at Sony? Or might the "fans" be misguided? Some of the same fans who explicitly asked for Sony to venture into the multiplayer space thinking that it wouldn't come with any sacrifices, by the way.

Nah you gotta get use the shot gun approach fire off 10 games various genres see what hits a fighting game or 2, a revival of socom or mag, horizon monster hunter like, a mmo, a few new ip. You don't need all of them to hit but if one dos you are in the money. And using thier expanded teams the won't get backed up on sp games.

"But over the last two years, Ryan has overseen a PlayStation shift toward “games as a service,” a popular industry buzzword referring to video games, usually multiplayer, that can be monetized over long periods of time. It’s been an uncomfortable pivot for some of Sony’s studios, which have spent the last decade building out teams of experienced developers to make big, cinematic adventure games that are played solo."

This is why for me
People do realize it was Shawn Layden's decision to bring Sony 1st party titles, multiplayer in particular, to PC, right?

The shift to multiplayer, for added revenue, already started before Jim Ryan took over.

Besides being really suprised that ND seems to be tied up with factions, I'd wait to see more evidence of any retreat from their bread and butter.

Let me answer your question then.

It's one thing to dabble on GaaS, it's another thing altogether to go all in making GaaS 55% of your overall first party budget. Those $3.2 billion on bungie would have funded 16 horizon and gow caliber games. But ok, they wanted to secure their future in case cod went exclusive. Fine. Buy bungie. But 55%?

There was not a single gaas game at that trash conference this E3 that looked even remotely interesting. I actually wanted them to embrace online games. I was for factions being PvE. But at some point, Jimbo just went insane. Between Ratchet and Spiderman 2, 2.5 years have passed without a next gen exclusive by Jimbo's first party. Who is to say that dividing these studios into teams making gaas trash didnt destroy their productivity?

Nintendo didnt chase any gaas trends. They are still making games they want to make knowing that they will always have an audience who want to play their games. Sony finally found success with their audience with horizon, gow, uncharted, even ghost of tsushima and days gone selling 5-10 million copies. And what do they do? They spit on their base and go chase fortnite and cod crowd.

Just dance with the one who brought you. its worked for nintendo. it hasnt worked for ms. it hasnt worked for 99% of developres chasing gaas fads. Go ahead and take some chances, but it shouldnt come at the expense of their existing games and it did.

If people are mad about the ceo shifting to gaas … I feel sorry for them for the next 5 years.

Why? Gaming will just lose money and status if dumb CEOs want to force every game to be GAAS.

You guys can bring me all of the LOL's but Jim Ryan isn't the only one that has shifted. It is the entire industry. Adjust or get left behind. I would be angry at Jimbo for GAAS but only if others were not doing the same thing.

Or we can just find other hobbies to spend our money on. Only a stupid CEO would force their consumers to buy something that there's not enough demand for. Pure IDIOT CEOs.

It is 10000% not Jim alone who wants to move to gaas. Sony sees the end game they are not stupid. Home consoles are going away one day .. I’d say in the next 20 years max.

Gaming will be a Sony app on all devices.

Yall said consoles were dead 10 years ago and yet here we are breaking records today. There's no high demand for a console\PC-less future. So why are you personally wanting it so bad?

I'm not saying that the poster was correct, but why in the world would MS spend $7.5 billion on Bethesda just to put their games on monthly subscription? Sometimes they just don't make financial sense but do it anyway just to get the subs up.

But we know Microsoft is the worse video game platform holder of the big three. And it's due to their terrible decisions. So don't use MS as a measuring stick.

Sounds risky for a company doing something completely new, but I could be wrong. Guess we will find out.

If Sony's focus has been singleplayer story-driven games and they need to have more GaaS alongside those, they have to start investing in them.
So obviously they have to invest a bit more to get things going.

Not true. Jim Ryan became CEO of SIE in April of 2019. That article was published August 2019. Layden worked for Ryan.

I'm sure he's a good guy personally. I've heard mixed things about how personable he is as a boss. But i'm glad he's gone. Nothing personal at all.

They are spending TOO MUCH on their GAAS approach. We all know it as a fact!

orly? We know 3 bil on bungee was a lot to drop but that's already and active money maker. I don't know how to decide what is too much altogether. Without being able to figure that out and given the recent track record, I have to assume they probably (but not defintely) know what they are doing.

read their chart. their investment is only going up. it is not 55% of their total budget today, but it will be by 2025.

this is when single player costs are exploding. when games are habitually getting delayed because studios are too small and no longer have the resources to ship games on time. This is the time for sony to go all in and give their single player studios the resources they need to keep up with the rising costs and resources.

CD project is creating new studios in america in order to continue making video games in a timely manner. they know one studio isnt enough. sony ought to do the same.

I agree but people have been begging for Sony to make riskier games and multiplayer before they bought bungie they had no major multiplayer first party game in a generation even Nintendo had splatoon and smash bros. You gotta take a risk to succeed in a new space hopefully I get my fighting game.

We don't have enough information to say that they're not heavily investing in single player games? there's very little communication about what their first party studios are doing. multiplayer has been an area where sony is seriously lacking. now that MS will probably own call of duty, overwatch, and diablo. Yeah they something.

Fair enough, it's not to say focus on GaaS wasn't Jim Ryan's idea, but I'm willing to bet it was more Layden's idea, as it apparently was his idea to bring their titles to PC as well.
Since that would primarily be multiplayer titles, it would be the most logical conclusion.

They are buying devs to run sony out of business. i thought that was clear from the emails?

Once its all said and done, and sony is no longer in the picture, they will NOT be eating the cost to get these very expensive servers up and running for a launch that will have 50 million people logging in for the first night. nah, they will have the user spend $500-1000 like they do today, and then enjoy the monopoly for the next ten to fifteen years without being rushed into getting a new console out. But they will NOT be pushing everyone to the cloud.

Cloud gaming vs netflix streaming are too very different things. the GPUs required for these things are ridiculously expensive. you can stream shit from a bunch of computers with ssds. cloud gaming is extremely expensive and will never replace console gaming. ever.

I understand why Sony is trying to develop gaas titles as even if only 1 or 2 are a hit that means a nice stream of revenue for them and a foundation for further gaas games to build on. Their single player games sell great but with gaming budgets getting bigger and bigger the more the games need to sell. So if they develop gaas games and get a hit that will help migrate some of the cost.

Well yeah, but wouldn't acquisitions and recruitment and all that be included?
Might explain why they plan on 55% of their total budget by 2025, incl development cost of the new IPs as well.

They are spending TOO MUCH on their GAAS approach. We all know it as a fact!

They are spending the exact same on non-live service games (actually a little more), while expanding their investment into Live Service games to support the studios they purchased that are making them.

There is no shift of focus. There is only an expansion of their portfolio... but I guess facts like that aren't sexy or clickbait enough to make for a good narrative.
