I'm genuinely enjoying this. I wouldn't say I'm a huge Borderlands fan, but I did play through B3 and thought it was alright - ironically enough, it was the performance of that one that got to me more than the story ever did, but that's not the case for me here. It definitely should be running better than it does and needs to be improved (and hopefully can be), but in general, all I ever ask for is 1440p at a solid 60fps with most graphical bells and whistles enabled, and I'm getting that here on a 4070 Super and 17-12700 (and then some, thanks to a really well-implemented framegen).
So yeah, B4 has its hooks in me right now. It just scratches that itch, starting with its super satisfying gunplay. I'm getting Destiny vibes from this (in a good way), particularly now with the double jump, jetpack floating and sparrow thingy, all in an open world.
If I had to criticize anything, it would be the following;
- UI is pretty clunky and bug-ridden - it will mark a different item for deletion than the one you've selected, there's no default sorting (it always goes back to "By Manufacturer"), cosmetics lists have no sorting at all. I only mention this first because you basically live in the gear menu in a game like this, so these issues become pretty glaring.
- Navigation kinda stinks - a mini-map would be nice, but even moreso would be an accurate marker tracker. It leads me into a wall way too often. Also, what's the point of having the tracker time out and be on cooldown? It's just not fun having to go back into the map so often to figure out where I'm going.
- This is likely a personal thing, while I wouldn't describe it as being difficult, it does become a bit "much" at times even on Normal. I'll be trying to clear marks on the map on something seemingly trivial like a Propaganda Speaker and next thing I know, I'm fighting for my life dealing with wave after wave. I'm an old man just trying to chill and shoot some shit here lol. This may just be a gear check though and my current gear at level 15 admittedly is trash.
That aside, the game is pretty damn great. The story is moving along nicely and the few side quests I've done have been really impressive. There was one involving a missile that was surprisingly poignant and makes me look forward to what the others have to offer. It's a shame that all conversations about this game lead back to performance (though understandably so, for the most part), as there's a lot to like here.
