Breaking: Fandom Sells Giantbomb - Jeff Grubb, Jeff Backalar Now Own It

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Looks like the current staff will all retain and they're free from Fandom's dumb guidelines permanently.

No, the old crew should at least be interesting

Echoing what I said in the other thread.

This is a far preferable outcome to whatever Fandom would have been able to do with the website. And it saves them the trouble of all going their own separate Patreon ways like Gerstmann and the Nextlander guys did.

At least the site will continue to run like it has been for the last few years, for those who like it or not.

Usually that means that owner (Fandom) sat down, counted the numbers, looked at metrics and then saw so little perspective in keeping GB afloat it was easier to throw the whole brand away.

While this is good for Grubb and co (I guess), in media business this is usually not a good sign for independent longevity of the outlet.

Man after all the bullshit and next month is SGF. Im 100% certain the Nextlander bois will show up.

Oh yeah, the nextlander crew and current GB have been on good terms, they appear on each others show all the time.

I think this moves makes it even more likely.

Hell, they might even get Gerstmann back for a GB show or two.

If they got the rights to all the back catalogue content and the backend of the website, I suppose there is some value in it. Asking a $100 a year for a subscription seems crazy, but that's probably old man yelling at clouds territory.

The team already quit. The only thing left to sell was the name and archival content which in 2025 probably isn't worth much.

good for the creators/new owners.

but yawn.

it is not 2011 anymore. Giant Bomb has not been relevant in a long time. No one wants to see a bunch of old dudes doing whatever the olds dudes are gonna do.

Are there enough paying Giant Bomb fans to make it so these 4 guys don't have to get a job?

Giant Bomb's financials have always been an enigma. There must have been a lot of premium subscribers because they've had like 8ish staff members while their videos were barely getting enough views to support a solo streamer full time.

Good for them. I don't care and at this point I wouldn't even care if the original crew game back. But still good for them if they can make it work.

How do they expect to sustain themselves? They do absolute zero to separate themselves from your garden variety YouTuber. Same with NPR Ambien talk show Nextlander.

Honestly , i only liked Giantbomb when Jeff Gerstmann , Ryan Davis, Brad Shoemaker and Vincent Caravella were there

Ya'll are a bunch of miserable, joyless motherfuckers

Resident Crybaby

I used to be a subscriber back when they were good. But they've been varying levels of shit for the past decade+. Either get some real friends or learn to let them go.

Probably, the nextlander crew is doing well and they actually pay any guest they have on their show, one of Vinny's big thing was that he always wants to compensate people for their time.

They have a sizable subscriber base.

I'd think it's in as good of hands as can be expected, now. The landscape for content creation is great and they can use the existing subscription and payment rails of the site to avoid dealing with Patreon fees. They'll have a challenge paying 5 people plus whoever does guest spots, though. If they really want to recapture the GB magic, however, they'll need more in-person time with each other. I'm so over listening to 3 to 5 people, all remote, trying to have natural conversations around latency and technical issues.
