However, Halo 2 is absolutely polarizing the same way MGS2 was. Halo 2 came towards the end of a console lifecycle and alienated a lot of people who loved the first title for the same reason MGS2 did, being the furthering of the story past cut-and-dry, black-and-white, good-and-bad. I wouldn't expect Halo 3, when it comes, to do the same kind of numbers. They'll be BIG numbers, yes, but not H1/H2 numbers.
See, you say it alienated lots of people, but I don't see much evidence of this (what could there be, really?). The game remains insanely popular (the total online players each day is as high or higher in the months right after launch), continues to sell well and a sequel is the #1 game people request for the 360 on polls when it's a choice.
The proof will be in the sales numbers, but Halo 2 looks like it did nothing but make the franchise more popular.
