Can The Last of Us Part 2 top GT3 as the best selling Sony game ever?

Gran Turismo 3 is at ~15 million.

I feel like Naughty Dog has A LOT of momentum right now, especially when talking about TLOU, which imo it is their biggest IP in the moment. I think we can safely say TLOU1 is sitting at ~10 million right now (PS3 + PS4), so the growth would have to be big. But still, the potential is certainly there. The marketing will probably be Sony's biggest effort ever.

What do you guys think? If the answer is negative, do you think any other future Sony game can surpass GT3? Maybe a proper GT7?

GT3 was on the best selling console of all time, and was massive with the European market, most of which I can probably assume were casual gamers.
Obviously just my opinion, but I don't think it could happen while we have home consoles at $300.

doubtful, Gran Turismo was on complete fire as a series on a console that just as equally hyped to the moon

By the time it launches PS4 will be something like $149 though

I has a chance I guess. But so does UC4 when it starts coming down in price.

I also don't see how TLOU is their biggest franchise. I'd say second biggest.

We don't even know what TLoU2 is, or if it's even going to be out before Sony's next console (assuming they make one). It's way too early for this conversation. Hell, another IP could come out before TLoU2 that surpasses GT3

Maybe, the first game was huge, so it's has a massive audience already and it'll probably be the PS4's swansong and get ported to PS5.

We do know what it is and unless something goes badly wrong with it's development it'll probably be out before 2019 (when I think the PS5 will be announced/released), they wouldn't have announced it if they thought it'd be a PS5 launch title.

Edit: Actually I think God of War has the better shot, game seems to have a ton of hype.

Let's ask Skeleseer.

Uhh yeah I think it can do, tbh I don't see there being a reason why anyone would think otherwise, unless they have a problem if it did. That PSX reaction was on another level, something I believe only a slim few of developers can provoke out of people.

At the end of the day it's going to be a story-driven game for mature audiences, and that just isn't going to beat sports, racing, or the kind of multiplayer shooter that 12-year-olds will play obsessively. So, no, not even close.

If TLOU is still only at 10 million then there is no chance. Biggest thing here is that TLOU is a mature game while GT3 was a game for everyone.

GT3 was groundbreaking at the time imo, I dont think it will ever be topped for Sony.

I think it's release is going to be an event, so it could probably sell 12m.

If it's a PS4/PS5 cross-release then 15m is possible.

No.

As popular as TLOU is, and TLOU2 seems to be generating huge interest- for example, a friend who is only into FPS games normally, bought the first game and is planning on the second because of how powerful he found part 2's trailer- it's still a game for certain crowds.

GT3 came out as a debut for a whole new exciting console generation, represented a shift in graphics and gameplay detail, and has more of a "universal appeal" thing going for it in terms of accessibility (i.e. a game for all ages). It also allowed for more fun play, as well as courting more "hardcore" racing crowd. Right place, right time, full package. Everyone I knew with a PS2 had the game, including me, and I didn't even like racing games at the time.

TLOU2 is going to do amazing though.

The real question is do you think well get a last of us 3 now that 2 has been announced? perhaps it can break the sales record!

I think Naughty Dog have overtaken PD but 15 million would be insane, maybe if the PS4 install base doubles by then why not, would love GTSport to do 10 million+ though.

I'd take shutting down Naughty Dog completely for a trade off to a proper GT7 developed by a capable team within the next 2-3 years.

X-D :-P
I'd have every Sony studio shut down to ensure TLOU2 gets released....

okay maybe not every studio

I think it's possible, the first game sold a lot and I think the sequel has a lot oh hype behind it, but at the same time I think death stranding will probably be the one to pull it off, simply because it's Kojima first new ip in a long time.

No, and GT has no chance of ever coming close to those numbers ever again.
Who knows for other games. Outside of some kind of phenomenon at the right place and time, I doubt it.

If Uncharted 4 couldn't top it, it's not happening. I don't think Naughty Dog cares either since they probably break even on development between 3-5 million copies.

Highly unlikely.

To get to 15 million it would have to reach a completely different demographic. Please note that GT3 came out at the peak racing interest. Racing games were the equivalent of sports games today. Plus it was the most popular franchise on the most popular console.

To put it another way, the only other games to have crossed that milestone on a PlayStation console are GTA and COD.

The Last of Us is a story-heavy series. I'm not sure that many newcomers will jump into TLOU2 wihout having played TLOU1 first... It's like starting a tv show at season five... Usually you try to track down previous seasons to "catch up to the plot". Some peole won't mind, of course, and I'm sure marketing will spin it so it feels like a standalone product to avoid this situation, but still, doubt that many will jump in without getting the first game.

As such , I expect either similar sale numbers on TLOU2 than on TLOU1. What could happen though is that , due to TLOU2 , TLOU1 gets a resurgence of sales, as newcomers want to catch up... Heck, maybe part 1 will end up being the one that break records, as new potential buyers get tempted by the HD remake, especially if it's at a low price (got mine for next to nothing during the halloween sales).

But alas, I think the numbers will probably stay similar... Unless Naughty Dog redefines gameplay and creates something that seems "must own" for gamers that weren't interested in TLOU1's gameplay and story heavy type of gameplay.
