Most people I know blame Layton for the 2006 election that brought in Harper for almost ten years. Man, fuck Jack Layton. The NDP are useless no matter how charismatic a leader they have - but the reason why the Orange Wave was never real was because most centre Canadians saw Layton as untrustworthy.

Liberal problems can be blamed only on Liberals. It's not the NDP's fault the Liberals got embroiled in a decades long feud between Chretinites and Martinites.

I find it quite funny how journalists keep harping "will the government go ahead with its projected deficits driven by investments in infrastructure to boost the economy, if the economy falls further?". Idiots, it's to supply economic activity until the "free market" can do its job again, they should finance the deficit even MORE if the economy gets worst.

They should also massively fund tourism campaigns and double that with immigration adverts around the world, and tweak the laws to let more people in, especially educated people. Make people want to come live here.

I guess I picked a good time to move to the US and get paid in US dollars. (Sort of – my savings and home equity will take a huge hit if I move them over.)

My folks are fucking loving this. They bought some property in Palm Springs when the US housing blow up was still going on and the dollar was near par, got it super cheap on foreclosure. After some renovations their agent told them it would be double what the paid if they wanna sell. Tack on the exchange rate change and they will make a mint.

Meanwhile I'll keep eating my Mr Noodle's for lunch and praying my landlord doesn't jack up rent (which he will since the property value shot up 18% last year)

Pain will get a lot worse here in the next 3 months with a lot of companies reporting year end numbers and prepping for massive G&A cuts (which means layoffs).

Glad I made that NYC last year. To think I thought the CAD was bad then. ;_; Seems like I dodged a bullet really.

RIP my desired trip to Yosemite though.

he bet all eggs into one basket (filled with oil) and one basket alone.

Harper was shortsighted, did not invest in infrastructure, did not invest on tech, did not invest on reknewables. Harper only cared about oil & gas alone.

now that the Saudi Arabian overlords are doing price fixing on oil, Canada is getting fucked

the Canadian dollar is a petro-dollar. If oil goes down, so does our dollar
If that's true, does this mean Alberta is fucked? :p

You're sure gonna miss your subsidized daycare and tuition when you lose your equalization payments - but have fun I guess!
Meh. Worth it if it means not being part of the fucking USA. At least we'd still have UHC.

I'm not a separatist, but I'd become one if this ridiculous scenario ever became true. But fortunately it won't.

The natural endpoint of the current course is a North American Union or Canada finally integrating into the United States. As scary as that may sound to Canadians. The military is already there, the difference between Canadian and American culture is about as different as New York and Louisiana culture, NAFTA exists.
lol @ this delusion.

RIP. We're slowly approaching Zimbabwe levels of worth.
Speaking of delusional... come on son. Not even close.

If there was any particular amount of certainty that the CAD would continue to drop, it would already be there no? Maybe there's something in economics/finance that I'm completely misunderstanding, but the amount of attention these predictions get always seems kinda dumb to me.

The falling CAD has definitely shattered any feelings I might have had about cash being particularly "safe". Obviously in nominal terms your not going to lose anything, but really, who cares about anything other than real value? Diversification is where it's at.

Poor Canada probably means poor Australia.
I weep
More like poor everyone else in the world that isn't the United States.
Then again, if you were American, you'd have to be worried about getting shot tomorrow.
So isn't being poor the better alternative?

My chances of being shot this year are less than 0.003%.

My chances of not being a broke-ass foreigner are 100%.

Pretty easy decision imo.

Sadly I have been waiting to exchange my US money for this very reason. Wanted to do it when it was 70 cents but I held off.

Is there any good reason not to convert my CAD to USD right now and then convert it back if (when) it does drop to 59 cents?

Yesssss, I am a grad student in Canada (and am a Canadian citizen) but grew up in the U.S and thus all my bank accounts and stuff are American. "Making" so much money on the conversion rate for my tuition and rent costs lol.

If you can find a place that will convert it at a good rate for you, why not? Doubtful, though. Banks aren't nice about that right now.

If it was certain that the CAD would fall to 59 cents it would already by 59 cents.

This would be currency speculation and highly risky.

Norbert's Gambit. The gist of it is that you buy a stock listed on both US and Canadian markets, and sell it one the other countries market. So if you wanted to convert CAD to USD to could buy a bunch of RY stock in CAD, and then sell it for USD.

The good, self-centered, news is that I probably won't buy shit I don't need. No new gaming PC for Cameron.

The bad news is that low income families will be in a worse place as the cost of living rises due to increasing food prices and whatever else.

Completely unrelated question I assure you, but are there any decent stripper joints in Canada to visit? One particularly with some great liquor to enjoy? Thanks.

Brandi's in Vancouver. It's the same place Ben Affleck was caught during his relationship with J.Lo

The others, not as classy with an increase in the amount of HA and other gang members there. Lot of good places in Montreal as well.

Is this a good time to buy maple syrup?

Anything else I should stock up on? All dressed chips?

Maple Syrup has gone insane because of higher fuel costs but mainly because it has taken off as a big commodity in Eastern Europe and China.

Still hard to come to grips with the current strength of the USD. I live in Hicksville, Oklahoma and as a programmer I make as much money at the current exchange rate as a Japanese businessman in Tokyo. The dollar has risen 60% versus the Indonesian rupiah since I moved from Indonesia to the USA. Just kinda insane.

What the hell happened to CBC's comment section? It used to be relatively decent (for a comment section anyway). Now it's an endless parade of stupid. It's like a bunch of dumb rednecks took over the place and chased everyone away.

Some of these comments have made me realise that many people on GAF have no recollection of the early 90s to the mid 00s.

The problem with this statement is that 90s/00s prices did not have decades worth of inflation along with changing global economics.

That, and prices never really went down for most goods when the dollar reached parity. Companies simply pocketed the difference, and are raising prices now to make up for the decline.

To Americans who want to visit, just remember that our prices are before taxes. So add about 5-13% (or more) depending on what province you visit. Still a deal, though. Enjoy!

So how easy is it to buy a Canadian car? I've been wanting to get a Porsche turbo and that will save major money if it's .6 to 1.00
