What the hell happened to CBC's comment section? It used to be relatively decent (for a comment section anyway). Now it's an endless parade of stupid. It's like a bunch of dumb rednecks took over the place and chased everyone away.

The Sun stopped allowing comments so the posters migrated to CBC.

Yeah but Japan is mostly unrelated. Abe's monetary policy has been pushing a weak yen in order to boost inflation. That hasn't worked as well as planned so lately it seems like it's returning to a more natural state as they try other things and prepare for election season.

There's a huge difference between what is happening there and Canada.

Possibly planning a trip to Montreal now...any gaf members been/lived there? What are the must do's?

Montreal's a great city. I've only spent three days there for Heavy Montreal but had a blast. I'm definitely looking into another visit not tied to festival scheduling now. Prepare yourself for people angrily shouting at you in French because you don't have a lighter.

So how easy is it to buy a Canadian car? I've been wanting to get a Porsche turbo and that will save major money if it's .6 to 1.00

As easy as it is in the US. It's even easier to transfer a Canadian car to the US than it is the other way around from what I've heard. I wonder if automobile costs.

What does a Porsche Turbo cost where you are? I think the 911 Turbo S brand new here is like $180k CAD which is like $118k USD. Though I don't know what the import duties and whatnot would be on such an expensive car.

I really don't know much about the city other than its heavy french influence, but it looks beautiful and different enough from Toronto, which feels like a US city. Angry french sounds hilarious, and maybe it's time for me to re-learn my basic french. I assume English will get me by fine though, right?

Almost 1:1 with the AUD. Tempted to take a trip. Heard Canada's like New Zealand though, if I wanted to go to NZ... well I wouldn't. If only our dollar would recover and the USD would plummet.

To Americans who want to visit, just remember that our prices are before taxes. So add about 5-13% (or more) depending on what province you visit. Still a deal, though. Enjoy!

Foreigners don't have to pay sales tax. If you keep all your receipts you can get a refund at the border.

Actually, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/visitors/

If you are a non-resident visitor to Canada, you cannot claim a rebate of the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) that you paid for all purchases made in Canada. The visitor rebate program for GST/HST was replaced on April 1, 2007, with the Foreign Convention and Tour Incentive Program (FCTIP). A non-resident visitor to Canada may be eligible to claim a GST/HST rebate on certain purchases related to conventions or for tour packages under the FCTIP.

My impression of Montreal is that it exists in a weird world halfway between Europe and America. It's incredibly beautiful and if the subject of this thread didn't exist I would probably be looking for some Engineering jobs there.

Most people in customer service positions the city can speak English and it's almost shocking how well they can switch between them.

Probably my favorite thing about Montreal relates to the language aspect. I took 5 years of French taught by Americans who didn't bother having us speak or listen to the language. I can read French decently but when it's spoken my brain shuts down and all the sounds blend together. That doesn't happen when people from Montreal speak. I feel like if I lived there my French classes wouldn't have been a complete waste.

Other than that, the food was good for the most part. I had Thai food that was pretty terrible but all the other restaurants were delicious. Montreal's famous for bagels so make sure you get some. Also, there was a donut shop that I really liked called "Chez Boris".

They should also massively fund tourism campaigns and double that with immigration adverts around the world, and tweak the laws to let more people in, especially educated people. Make people want to come live here.

If Canada opened up immigration, it would probably seem movement from the US, especially people working in tech.

Is there any good reason not to convert my CAD to USD right now and then convert it back if (when) it does drop to 59 cents?

Because if it went back up (instead of down) you'd loose your shirt.

So, just like the US then? (Euro-land has VAT, not the US).

They probably have similar laws preventing border purchases on auto like they do for Canadians going to the US. Also in general even before the Loonie plummeted, cars in the US have always been cheaper.

Awesome, thanks for the help. I took 3 years of french in high school and haven't used it since, hoping it will come back to me easily. But listening to recordings of spoken french in class always threw me off, could never understand what they were saying so hopefully I have the same experience as you in Montreal.

Will definitely try a bagel, and I've been dying to try poutine :D
Any impressions from the bar scene there? Would love to try some different beers.

It's the only thing that will save us.
Foreign investors need to find a way to back Trump's campaign.

I live there. As for must do's, it really depends on what kind of activities you want. If you narrow it down maybe I can make some suggestions.

I see you mentioned bars in another post. Welp, that's one area I'm useless in, as I don't drink. xD

Don't worry about not speaking French. Pretty much everyone speaks English in Montreal. Those that don't, usually don't speak French either. xD The lighter anecdote mentioned earlier baffles me, can't say I know what they were talking about.

Well, Harper did say he wanted the loonie to be worth about 70 cents against the greenback. Guess he got his wish...

What. A single regular cucumber?! 3$?!
Oh, yes. This is only the start. Commodities will keep on increasing as the loonie drops. It's too bad my salary isn't going up to compensate for it. This next 5 years is going to be bloody. I really hope the Liberals isn't stupid enough to increase the GST. Fuck this.

Like the us, but from what I've seen many Americans get shocked at the sales tax rate. It's around 13 or 15% in most provinces.

A new turbo is around 170-200k usd currently. If currency rates falls to .6 I could buy a new one or slightly used at huge savings from Canada. From what I read there is a 2% duty then I have to pay regular sales tax.

They probably have similar laws preventing border purchases on auto like they do for Canadians going to the US. Also in general even before the Loonie plummeted, cars in the US have always been cheaper.

I haven't read anything preventing it. The most pain in the ass thing they do is require a letter from the company (Porsche) stating that vin numbered car meets all safety and environment standards of the USA.

Regardless I'm getting a passport now. If I can save 20-30k I'm doing it.

I don't drink but nightlife is huge in Montreal so I imagine that you'll have a good time.

The pound has also remarkably collapsed. A few months ago £1 was almost $1.60. Now it's almost at $1.40.
